2026 Watch List

There's an opportunity for Vrabel to go Ohio State early again with Caleb Downs and Carnell Tate. Downs is interesting. If we're playoff bound, he's probably a stretch but if we have a middling season this year, safeties do have a tendency to fall.

Carnell Tate is 6'3 although 191lbs isn't ideal. He's going to be someone I'm going to like I suspect because I really like WRs who do the fundamentals right whether it's excellent catching ability, route running or blocking.

Basically watch Texas and Ohio State for everything, Clemson for DL and Utah for OL. And if you want an athletic marvel then Penn State.

I'm already looking ahead to 2027

Colin Simmons, a defensive end for the University of Texas, has been highly praised by PFF (Pro Football Focus) for his performance in his first year. He was the sixth-most valuable edge defender in the nation according to PFF's "wins above average" metric. PFF also ranked him as the top returning edge defender for the 2025 season. Additionally, he won the Shaun Alexander Freshman of the Year Award.
Here's a more detailed look at his PFF accolades:
  • Top-15 Pressure Rate: Simmons had a 18.6% pressure rate, placing him among the top 15 in the nation.
  • Run-Defense Grade: He also showed strength as a run defender, earning a 73.4 grade.
  • High PFF Grade: In his second season, he achieved an 83.8 PFF grade, a significant improvement from his freshman year, according to PFF.
  • Top-10 Returning Edge Rusher: PFF included him in its Top 10 list of returning edge rushers for the 2025 season.
  • PFF Preseason All-American Team: Simmons was recognized on PFF's Preseason All-American Team.
  • True Freshman Success: He is praised for his exceptional performance as a true freshman, with PFF highlighting him as a future superstar.
  • QB Hits: PFF noted that Simmons recorded 13 quarterback hits during the 2024 season, placing him fifth among all defensive players in college football.
  • Run-Defense Stops: He tied for eighth among Power Four edges with 23 run-defense stops last year.
Generative AI is experimental.

Pats will need someone to step up for Diggs before he leaves. Williams will hopefully be a good WR but at 5'10 they could use some size.

Denzel Boston WR - Washington - Really looks the part already. Just needs some polish. Give him 1 year and he will shoot up boards. 6'3.5 and has tremendous bend and quickness for that size. So much so he even returns kickoffs and punts on occasion. He comes out of routes crisply and plays with power. Son of David Boston. An often forgotten about name but he was on his way to be one of the big names in the league before his injury. Year 3 he was coming into his own and get near 1600 yards and AP honors. Then he got injured halfway through next season. While he saw flashes he was gimpy on and off much of the rest of his career and never looked the same. I think come next year he is a first round guy. At worst mid second round. Just already looks the part and still has room to grow. Also, he's named Boston, how is that not a Patriot?
I was hoping the Pats would’ve double dipped in the WR pool, or drafted a good receiving TE in the 2025 draft. They still need to “weaponize the offense” in my opinion. They don’t have that BIG fast receiver. And with our TEs being 31, and Hooper only having a 1 year contract, I was hoping they would’ve drafted a pass catching TE.

So that’s what I’ll be watching for in the 2026 draft.

Maybe they like Jaheim Bell he could be a Monster from the FB position and off the LOS. Also UDFA TE CJ Dippre can't believe he went undrafted he's a TE you have to Scheme open: no one is better at doing that than Josh McDaniels. CJ Dippre's strength is Blocking I think we're going to see a lot more of him.

Is it too late to be talking about the 2027 draft? The one where 2 franchise WR’s are eligible

They could’ve drafted someone better than Dippre and Bell was a 7th round hardly used TE. This was a very deep TE class, so I was disappointed during the draft. I do think Dippre might beat out Bell due to his blocking, but unless he has hidden offensive talent, I don’t expect him to be around longer than maybe a year.

CJ Dippre ran under 4.7 for his size I found that very intriguing.

One guy I’m looking at is Southern Carolina WR Nyck Harbor who is 6’5” 235, and allegedly runs an under 4.30 forty. Eugene Wilson’s son is rated as the 7th best receiver for 2026, out of Florida with good speed, same size as dad, 5’10 183. I also like Ja’Kobi Lane out of USC. A 6’4” receiver.

So i looked over whose actually here in 2026, who we got this year, who i think will be useful. Also we need to remember we won't have a ton of cap space next year. So we probably need to solve a lot of this through draft/UDFAs

WR - While I'd like to draft a WR... compared to other spots not a huge need. We have a lot of guys on contract next year and we could run the same core again. Could it be improved? Sure. And should be... but while this is a need.... Is it a 'must use a high pick next year?'. No. If a guy falls, sure. If not maybe pass on it. Priority: MID

TE - For likely guys here we have Hunter in his last year and getting older.... And Dupree will probably stick as the #2 on his cheap deal. We need a TE of the future. This should be a bit of a priority. Though they can put it off if they need to. Priority: MID HIGH.

OL - In general they should look to improve the OL. Hopefully guys stick out and we can redo Onwenu's contract. Even though.... They should try to use at least 1 more high pick here... maybe future RT or G. Campbell/Onwenu/Wilson and Moses all return. Moses is the old vet so that is an option.. but they have him the year after too. If they get a workable solution at guard in 2025 just pick anything besides center. If they need to part with Onwenu though picking a great guard suddenly becomes probably #1. In either case they will need to add 1 person here, most likely to the interior. Worse case scenario is Campbell moves inside and Onwenu is cut. Suddenly LT is a need again. Then not only is it a high priority, it is the automatic first pick. Priority MID HIGH

RB - They already used a high pick on their RB of the future. Gibson/Stevenson are back and Larson hopefully becomes a nice cheap option. Maybe if someone walks or they need a spot take a shot in the 4th at the most. Also Lampe probably sticks at FB so should be set there. Priority: LOW

QB - Priority: LOW. Nuff said.

DT - Milton Barmore Farmer(hope he works out) and Pharms (If he's kept) are the guys still under contract who are notable. Our hope is Farmer gives us that elite top 3 rotation. They will need a big body here but that should be easy to get without too high a pick and cheap if they want to get it in FA. So while they need another guy here it is the easiest and cheapest kind to get and they are in okay shape looks like. Priority: LOW MID

EDGE - Landry, Swinson (I think he will earn this spot), White, Jennings (Maybe if he sticks) Ponder(If he turns out good). Outside of what i think will be the top 3 there are a few 'what ifs' here. Maybe Ponder comes on as a very competent back up but I have some concerns here. Not a ton but some. This could look good come 2026 pre draft with a proven 5 deep rotation or need some help if White and Ponder don't work out. I'll split the difference. Priority: MID LOW

LB - Elliss, Spillane, Tavai (if they keep him) - So they have 2 guys they like and will keep. After that is is questionable. But with the top 2 starting spots locked this need isn't dire, just important. They need a guy but not in the top rounds automatically. But while Spillane is here in 2027 Elliss is not. Tavai is if they keep him, but he may not even stick. So while they have their starters for 2026 they should look at this spot in that draft with an eye toward 2027. Priority: MID HIGH

CB - Gonzo, Davis - Yeah... that's pretty much it. They will need to sign AND draft someone. If FA turns south and they can't get a decent option here this becomes the biggest need. Will be big anyway. But since they big need here will be a nickle guy, that is a day 2 draft spot typically. Priority: HIGH

S - Dugger Peppers Woodson Mapu(if he sticks and if you even count him here). Schooler makes it too but for STs. Needless to say this spot is light if Epps and Hawkins both walk. Plus with Dugger's contract this could go south BADLY. But while a need, they could be happy with the top 3 here. Priority: MID HIGH

So to sum up.... Getting a Great DB of some kind in the draft will be needed. Even if we successful extend gonzo in his final year the Davis contract on year 3 may need looking into if his play drops; hopefully not. LB be worth a big look too. The front of the D should be okay as well as the edge,. but if a guy falls it is of course an option, though more likely a spot to jump on in round 3 or 4 than 1 or 2.

RB and QB can be pretty much ignored. Maybe look into it day 3 if something interesting comes up. TE isn't 100% needed but you'd hate to wait till the final year to try to get one. Better to be a year early on it but they can pass 1 more year if they feel value isn't there. OL. Need to keep drafting high here. RT or G most likely. But doesn't need to be in the top 2 rounds either unless LT is an issue. WR is something we need again sooner rather than later cause Diggs isn't a long term option but only if value is there.

Need order IMO CB > LB > S > OL >>> TE > WR > EDGE > DT >>> RB > QB

The 2027 draft will be one for the ages, especially if Arch stays for his senior season.

IDK exactly who we draft, but i know how i want to attack it. We need to leave that draft (unless we sign our nickle CB free agent long term) with a nickle back, a LB, a Safety and some OL.. maybe WR/TE if it falls.

From the early look of things this doesn't seem to be a great draft for TEs at the moment, that can change, but this last draft was draft to get a TE. So I'd hold out for next year. Nickle guys (even top end ones) typically are there at pick 50-90... So i don't think we draft that need first. Since we don't need an LT (hopefully) we don't need to draft an OL in the first round unless we absolutely love the guy.

LBs and Safeties can go fast if they are good. But we may have our top 2 guys are each spot next year. There is no clear pick we NEED to use the #1 pick on IMO. We have needs but none which are 'must pick first' caliber for 2026

1st round pick - trade down. Typically I'd be against this.... but given what we need and where the roster may be it may not make sense to pick here unless someone of sensational value falls. which isn't as typical in round 1. We are probably better off losing some value in round 1 and gaining value in rounds 3 and 4 as we want more picks in the top 80 range.

Late 1st - OG... best available. In the end this is the only slot i know which is likely to see starting level snaps.
2nd round pick - nickle CB.
First 3rd round pick - LB
Second 3rd round pick (From a trade down in the first )- S
4th round pick. DT
4th round pick WR (if one is there you like... or if a great value guy falls pick him... otherwise trade pick into next year)
