can check out all the teams udfa signings
Looks like lots of try-outs. Think I counted 17 names on that list, with 10 open roster slots. There will be a lot of churning and culling happening very quickly. A lot of vets should be feeling very nervous today.

Keeping track of all
The Cal Poly EDGE we signed, Elijah Ponder, has the athleticism you'd want from an edge rusher you draft in the top. He does lack size though and scouting reports suggest he's a designated pass rusher only at the next level. That athleticism gives him a foot up though

Great athlete, but didn't really dominate at a lower level. Makes one wonder what the issue was. Badly used in scheme, bad technique? His last 2 years he seemed healthy, which while good means that was actually his results at that level. He is for sure a guy you take a chance on as a project.

IF he can have a great training camp, he can probably beat out Jaheim Bell as TE 3. He was the 12th rated TE by many. I believe Gee Scott Jr. was #13.
How good of a camp does he really need to beat out Bell though? I mean Bell is the definition of a JAG. He played STs more than TE and wasn't all that good at either. Better STs than TE though.

For all the great things this team has done, is anyone else surprised by the lack of an urgency at guard? They didn't draft one and the only OL UDFA they brought has more of an OT build in Jack Conley. He played guard at Boston College. As well as Tackle in 2023 mostly. But at 6'7 he is kind of tall for a guard. Who knows if he can do it here. In any case he certainly isn't one of the 'steal UDFA' signings.

You would think they would have made some moves to bring in some top UDFA guards since they didn't draft one, but nope. Not a one.

One thing to remember is that what fans/media tout as "top" UDFAs aren't always locks to make their respective teams or even be solid contributors at the NFL. They usually go undrafted for a reason. Team boards are also vastly different so somebody like Conley may've had a Round 6 or 7 grade for the Patriots but may've graded as a Priority UDFA/Not a Scheme Fit for other NFL teams.

Some of the top UDFAs last year were guys like Leonard Taylor III (1.5 Sacks), Omar Speights (67 Tackles), Blake Watson (4 Carries, 1 Catch), Kendall Milton (0 Touches), Isaiah Williams (2 Catches), Jalen Coker (32 Catches, 2 TD), Dallin Holker (3 Catches), Gabriel Murphy (2 Games), Jalen Sundell (12 Games), and Donovan Jennings (0 Games).

Demeer Blankumsee. I repeat Demeer
Blankumsee.
This dude  has to make the team just on his name alone. PS is okay but we need this guy.

He has impressive career statistics. recorded 27 sacks, 43.5 tackles for loss, and 44 quarterback hurries, ranking first in quarterback hurries and in the top five in program history for sacks and tackles for loss.

He was top 6 in the conference in 2024 in both sacks and TFL. But he was better the year before ranking top three in both. It’s important to note Cal Poly went 3-8 the past two years in a row. It’s easy for better teams to focus on one player on a bad overall team, he didn’t have a lot of help around him.

He adds talent and developmental depth to a now deep OLB room with Landry, Jennings, Swinson and Chaisson. He needs to get stronger and might take a season.

Bell showed something as a blocker last year, I think Josh will try him out at FB this offseason.

Dippre will probably take that third blocking TE role behind Henry and Hooper.

Conley is a big stiff, he’s massive but not a good athlete. I don’t see it. But they have a fair amount of guards, and centers who can play guard.

If Bradbury returns to form at center, Strange can play guard well. If Sow doesn’t end up at tackle he can play guard. Jake Andrews returns healthy and played some guard as a rookie.

Add to that talented rookies in Jared Wilson and Cole Birdow and they have some options. There’s a fair amount of talent there. Sow and Birdow have some tackle flexibility and the rest have center flexibility. The rookies are weak and need to get stronger, but they might surprise by contributing this season.

Perhaps Vrabel likes starters Strange and Onwenu with Schweitzer as a backup (plus Robinson, Sow and Andrews).

Perhaps Vrabel sees things different that you do in not seeing anyone in the late rounds or as an UDFA who is better than what we have.

Well it isn't just me who sees it this way. Everyone and I mean everyone had guard as a need pre draft. Now it suddenly isn't cause we didn't invest real resources in getting a high potential one either in FA, draft one even in round 7 or as a UDFA? This isn't to say it will be as bad as last year, clearly Vrabel either sees things differently or has other plans for the position.

In any case it is clear guard play will improve due to the improvement of the tackles, center and Onwenu being healthy and back to his natural position. It should be good enough. Even if the last guard spot is complete garbage cause Strange gets gimpy again and no one we have does any better than last year, as long as it is just that one weakness we can work around it.

Looking forward to TC, should be some great competition this year. If I were a veteran would come to camp with my game face on as there seems to be a lot of competition across the board, the reinstituting of a meritocracy is back.
With the exception of a few, no one's job is safe..

not everyone. Getting a center in the draft moved Strange back to guard fixing that issue. Drafting more guards just to cut them when you have positions with actual need is kind of silly

Webb is quite interesting as a potential Z receiver. Has good NFL speed at sub 4.5, only had 4 drops this past season and a 70% contested catch rate which is impressive. He lines up mostly outside.

Demeer Blankumsee is a slot only receiver. He's fast and gets open but rounds his routes a little too much for my liking. I really like how physical he's prepared to be with the ball in hand - he does not go down easily. 6 drops for him.

I don't see a route to the team for Blankusmee but Webb, whilst still up against it, has an outside chance. There's not much to see online, but what little I saw was intriguing.
