The 1995 Draft

April 22, 1995:
The 60th Annual Player Selection Meeting, better known as the 1995 NFL Draft
Paramount Theatre at Madison Square Garden, in New York City
Day One, Rounds 1-3

New England entered the draft having just completed their best season in eight years, making the playoffs for the first time since 1988. Both the roster and the execution on the field were steadily improving after Bill Parcells and Drew Bledsoe arrived in 1993. In addition to Drew, the Pats drafted Chis Slade in '93 and Willie McGinest in '94. After a 1-11 start in '93, the Patriots had gone 14-6 in their last twenty regular season games.

The Patriots would add five players in the 1995 draft that would help them advance to the super bowl a year later - four of whom were selected on Day One.

1st round, 23rd overall -- CB Ty Law, Michigan
3x Super Bowl champ, 2x All Pro, 5x Pro Bowl, 2x NFL season interception leader, Pats All-1990s team, Pats All-2000s team, Pats 50th Anniversary team, Pats All-Dynasty team, Patriots Hall of Fame, Pro Football Hall of Fame

2nd round, 57th overall -- LB Ted Johnson, Colorado
3x Super Bowl champ, Pats All-1990s team; 125 games, 760 tackles over ten seasons

(On March 2, 1995 the Pats received the tenth pick of the third round as compensation for loss of RFA Kevin Turner signing with Philadelphia)

3rd round, 74th overall -- RB Curtis Martin, Pitt
1995 Offensive Rookie of the Year, 2x Pro Bowl w/Pats, Pats All-1990s team, Pro Football Hall of Fame

3rd round, 88th overall -- CB Jimmy Hitchock, North Carolina
37 games, 20 starts, 4 picks in three seasons with Patriots

On the next day the Patriots would also draft Dave Wohlabaugh, who would start at center with the Pats for the next four seasons before departing in free agency.

This was an absolute fantastic draft for the Patriots, despite some players leaving before signing a second contract.

The first overall pick in this draft was Penn State RB Ki-Janna Carter, by Cincinnati. While he did score 16 touchdowns in his first two season, injuries slowed Carter down. He rushed for only 747 yards in four seasons with the Bengals, and played in only four games from 1998-2000.

Tony Boselli went second and Steve McNair third. Remarkably the Patriots were not the only team to select two future Hall of Famers in this draft. After years of ineptitude the Tampa Bay Buccaneers drafted DT Warren Sapp 12th overall, and LB Derrick Brooks #28. The Jets and other teams passed on Sapp due to rumors of failed drug test.

Check out the NFL's Fact Sheet from April 22, 1995, answering the burning questions of
"What is the Internet", "Why is the Internet important" and "Why is the Internet important to the NFL?"

1993-1996 drafts were insane. Parcells really had an eye for talent. Had he stayed and kept his personnel power, he would've found more gems and the team would've been loaded from 1997-1999. I think they would've seriously made the Broncos sweat or knock them off by 1998 at the latest. Parcells built a really good Jets team in such a short time. I think they could've beaten Tennessee in 1999, but Jacksonville would've knocked them off with a healthy Testeverde.

one of my favorite pats drafts tho i didn't 100% realize it at first. of course i knew ty law at mi. especially when they played co. with kordell and i think it was him covering westbrook on that play. but teddy and curtis i wasn't 100% sure about. it didn't take long for me to come around. do i remember jimmy hitchcock having bad knees or something ? this is all just from the vast wasteland of my memory.

Now that was a great draft..two hall of famers

The 1990 Draft

April 22, 1990:
The 55th Annual Player Selection Meeting, better known as the 1990 NFL Draft
Marriott Marquis, in New York City
Day One, Rounds 1-5

New England finished with a 5-11 record in 1989, which put them at number five in the draft order. However, one-win Dallas had forfeited their number one pick by selecting QB Steve Walsh in the 1989 supplemental draft, and the Phoenix Cardinals had forfeited their number four pick for the same reason, on QB Timm Rosenbach (who was 5-15 in the NFL as a starter, with 16 TD and 24 interceptions).

The Colts took Illinois QB Jeff George first, and the Jets selected Penn State RB Blair Thomas. In typical Jete fashion Thomas was a bust, averaging 502 yards in his four seasons in East Rutherford.

As a result of the two supplemental picks the Patriots owned the third overall pick rather than the fifth. Unfortunately they elected to trade down; two future Hall of Famers were selected in the next three picks: DT Cortez Kennedy at #3, and LB Junior Seau at #5.

1st round, 3rd overall -- Pats trade down, sending 1.3 and 2.229 to Seattle for 1.8, 1.10, 3.64 and a 1991 4th.
Seahawks select Miami DT Cortez Kennedy.

1st round, 8th overall -- LB Chris Singleton, Arizona State
41 games (26 starts), 4 sacks in 3½ seasons with the Pats; 90 games total over 7 NFL seasons

1st round, 10th overall -- DE Ray Agnew, North Carolina State
66 games, 7½ sacks over five seasons with the Pats; 157 games over 11 NFL seasons

3rd round, 59th overall -- QB Tommy Hodson, LSU
36 games with 12 starts over three seasons w/Pats; 7 NFL seasons as a backup

3rd round, 64th overall:
Pats trade down, sending 3.64, 6.143 and 8.197 to Dallas for 3.80, 5.120 and 7.166

3rd round, 80th overall -- WR Greg McMurty, Michigan
58 games (40 starts) with 120 receptions, four touchdowns in four seasons w/Pats

4th round, 86th overall:
Pats trade down, sending 4.86 to Washington for 5.110 and 5.111

5th round, 110th overall -- CB Junior Robinson, East Carolina
16 games with 11 kickoff returns in his one season with the Pats; 26 games total in two NFL seasons

5th round, 111th overall:
Pick traded to Broncos for Denver's 1991 4th round pick

5th round, 113th overall -- G Jon Melander, Minnesota
One season (10 games, 3 starts) w/Pats; 54 games (32 starts) over 4 NFL seasons

5.120 - RB James Gray, Texas Tech
waived at end of training camp; zero NFL games

Uggh. What can you say; not a good draft no matter how you spin it.

I get that they had lots of holes to fill and therefore went with two top-tens over the #1, but yuck; that did not turn out well, at all.

The 1991 Pats may have improved to 6-10, but they were right back down to 2-14 in '92 and 5-11 in '93 - and much of that has to do with this underwhelming draft.

It was simply not a very good draft for Director of Player Operations Joe Mendes, especially when considering how early in each round the team was drafting.

As for new Head Coach Rod Rust, the rest of the year would only get worse.

Yeah, I do recall not knowing anything at all about Curtis Martin. If I recall correctly he missed almost all of his senior year with an injury, which made me think at the time that we just wasted a pick on damged goods, lol.

We may of only won 6 games that year but it was fun factor 10. Martin crushed it his rookie season and rebuild felt like we were almost there.

Double Trade-Down: The 2010 Draft

April 22, 2010:
The 75th Annual Player Selection Meeting, better known as the 2010 NFL Draft
Radio City Music Hall, New York City
Day One, Round One

New England finished 2009 with a disappointing 10-6 record and quick exit in the wild card round. The Pats entered the draft with the 22nd overall pick, a better starting place to reload compared to most of the previous drafts of the decade.

1st round, 22nd overall pick:
Pats trade down two spots, sending 1.22 to Denver, for 1.24 and 4.113
The Broncos use this pick on WR Demaryius Thomas

1st round, 24th overall pick:
Pats trade down three spots, sending 1.24 and 4.119 to Dallas, for 1.27 and 3.90
The Cowboys use this pick on WR Dez Bryant
Patriot fans have a meltdown

1st round, 27th overall -- CB Devin McCourty, Rutgers
205 starts, 35 interceptions; 3x Super Bowl champ, 3x 2nd-team All Pro, 2x Pro Bowl, Pats All-2010s team, Pats All-Dynasty team

The selections from the next two days would be more interesting.

7th round, 216th overall -- K Owen Poachman, BYU

7th round, 239rd overall -- OLB T.J. Turner, Michigan State

It wasn't all roses with Parcells. Can't forget he wanted Tony Brackens instead of Terry Glenn in the first round of the '96 draft.

He REALLY did not want Glenn. Then the guy goes on to break all WR rookie numbers in 96’.

Other Pats April 22 Trivia

April 22, 1973
Patriots re-sign Tom Fletcher as defensive backs coach

Tom spent two seasons as a coach with the Pats.

Thomas Fletcher Obituary
After living through the attack on Pearl Harbor, 2 years of black outs and no school the family decided to move to the mainland. He thrived as an athlete in high school, lettering in 3 sports and graduated from Shafter High School in California and was one of the first inductees into the Shafter Hall of Fame a few years ago. He was awarded a football scholarship to St. Mary's College and later transferred on scholarship to Arizona State. He graduated in 1954 and was drafted by the San Fransico 49ers and later played with the New York Giants. Due to an ankle injury he returned to Arizona State as an assistant coach.

In 1956 he married Frances Hawes Fletcher and one year later they followed Dan Devine to the University of Missouri. In 1959 and 1960 Susan and Sandra were born. He was 8 years at Missouri with many successful seasons, including a Sugar Bowl and two Orange Bowls. He would want you to know his defensive line held the Heisman Trophy winner to 4 yards of rushing. He then went on to accepted a position with the Pittsburgh Steelers. After 3 years there he joined the coaching staff at the University of Pittsburgh. Then came the move to New England, settling in Medfield. His defensive coaching career continued with the New England Patriots. His final years in coaching were spent at Boston University.

After his stint there he had an opportunity to start his own ceramic tile business, Advance Systems, Inc. in Florida. The business thrived and after 14 years he sold it and retired. This afforded him the time to really concentrate on his biggest passion, boating.

April 22. 1993:
RFA WR Mike Farr is signed off Detroit's roster.
Farr was waived/injured at the end of training camp and released in November; he played in 42 NFL games, but none for the Pats.

April 22, 1999:
RB Sedrick Shaw is traded to the Cleveland Browns
The former third round draft pick was considered to be a bust, with 236 yards rushing over two seasons.

Pete Pedro passes away at the age of 67

"Pistol" Pete Pedro -- Lynn Legacies
“Pistol” Pete Pedro stopped playing football in the mid-1960s, but in the mind’s eye of many Lynn sports fans, he is still leaving tacklers in his wake at Manning Bowl. Pete wasn’t a big running back at 5-8, 160 pounds, but his combination of speed and strength made him a threat to score every time he touched the ball.

After a starry career at the former Lynn Trade, where he is generally acknowledged to be the greatest player in the history of the school, the legend of “Pistol” Pete Pedro grew, first at Trinidad Junior College in Colorado and then at West Texas State, where he finished second in the country in rushing and scoring as a sophomore, with 22 touchdowns and 132 points.

The story of his duel with Preacher Pilot of New Mexico State was immortalized by Robert Creamer in Sports Illustrated in October 1962 and is still online at Pistol Pete Meets Preacher Pilot.

He had a taste of professional football on the taxi squad of the Boston Patriots before ending his career as a semi-pro player.

Peter Jr. said his father, who worked for the Lynn School Department, has always been humble about his accomplishments and pleased when people remember him.

He was raised on Shepard St. in West Lynn by his mother Louise Pedro, attended Lynn Public Schools and graduated from Lynn Trade in 1959. Peter was a star running back while at Lynn Trade. His success lead him to Trinidad Jr. College in Colorado and later to West Texas State University, where he was one of the leading rushers in the nation. After graduation, he signed with the Boston Patriots and spent a year on their taxi squad. Following a successful football career, Peter began working as a school teacher in Lynn, first at the Washington Elementary School. He left teaching to work briefly at General Electric in West Lynn before returning to his alma mater, now Lynn Tech. Peter later worked as a guidance counselor, currently at Fecteau-Leary Jr./Sr. High School and has been in the Lynn School Department for over 30 years. He was a proud member of the Lynn Teachers Union and a dedicated supporter of youth sports throughout the city

Patriots sign free agent TE Mitchell Wilcox

A native of the sponge diving capitol of the US (Tarpon Springs Florida), Mr. Wilcox has appeared in two games for the Patriots. Agent 86/87 has been on the field for 28 special team snaps, and one on offense. He spent most of 2024 on the practice squad with the Patriots, and is currently a free agent.

Today in Patriots History
Elandon Roberts

Happy 31st birthday to Elandon Roberts
Born April 22, 1994 in Port Arthur, Texas
Patriot linebacker, 2016-2019; uniform #52
Pats 6th round (214th overall) selection of the 2016 draft, from the University of Houston
Pats résumé: four seasons, 60 games (33 starts); 206 tackles (15 for a loss), 14 QB hits; 10 playoff games, 7 starts, two rings

The list of players that have gone to three Super Bowls and earning two rings - before the age of 25 - has to be extremely short.

Not bad for a guy that wasn't invited to the NFL Draft Combine.

February 3, 2019:
UH's Elandon Roberts gets 2nd Super Bowl ring with Patriots -- Houston Chronicle
Bill Belichick first noticed Roberts in a game against Navy in 2015 when he had seven tackles, 4½ for loss, and two sacks. "He was impossible to miss," Belichick said shortly after.

But even after leading the nation with 88 solo tackles as a senior, in the most extensive playing time of his college career, Roberts went largely unnoticed and was not invited to the combine. His 5-11 and 235-pound frame - not exactly prototypical for an NFL linebacker - had something to do with the lack of interest from teams.

He improved his draft stock by a running a 4.6-second 40-yard dash.

Elandon Roberts missed just four games in his four years with the Pats, three coming in the first month of his rookie season. He played in 60 regular season games with 33 starts, tallying 206 tackles (119 solo), 15 tackles for a loss, 14 QB hits, six pass deflections, four sacks, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. The Patriots were 47-13 in games he played. Due to injuries to James Develin and Jakob Johnson in 2019 Roberts also played fullback, logging 58 snaps on offense during the regular season and 12 more in the playoff loss to Tennessee. Prior to the start of the season Elandon was voted as one of the defensive co-captains.

Roberts scored one touchdown with the Patriots - and it was on offense. On December 29, 2019 he caught a short pass to the right flat from Tom Brady, and ran past Miami defenders for a 38 yard touchdown.

Elandon also appeared in ten postseason games, with 31 tackles (19 solo) and one tackle for a loss. The Pats were 8-2 in those games, giving Roberts an overall record of 55-15 in games he played for New England.

In 2018 the Patriots drafted ILB Ja'Whaun Bentley, and the Patriots did not re-sign Roberts. He signed a one-year, $2 million contract with the Dolphins, reuniting with former Pats linebackers coach Brian Flores. Roberts became a free agent again in 2023, and has spent the last two seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Oct 13, 2016:
(Brother) Jermire's football career was over by 2004, just as Elandon's was beginning. Elandon leaned on his older cousin for everything -- learning the game, analyzing the game, approaching the game correctly. Elandon's older brother, Eli, had an influence, too, but Eli didn't play football. His influence came on the academic side.

In high school, Jermire did not feel it was necessary to watch film. After all, he was an athlete. Looking back, Jermire realized what he could have done better, and he did not want Elandon to take the little things lightly.

Not that he had to worry too much about that.

Ask Elandon about his day and he'll tell you about football practice. Ask what's new in his life, he'll probably also tell you about practice. Everything with Elandon is "molded around football," according to Jermire.

"He has things that I didn't have," Jermire said. "And I think, this another reason, Jermire, why you didn't make it. It was 24/7 thinking football (with Elandon). For me, it was accepting in part to myself 'I'm going to the league, I'm going to the NFL.' It made me sit back because everybody told me that. Everybody told him he's too small to go the NFL...I had the size. I had what was considered the speed at that time. I didn't have that extra push that he had."

Other April 22 Birthdays

Happy 79th birthday to Bob Geddes
Born April 22, 1946 in Seattle; raised in Riverside, California
Patriot linebacker, 1973-1975; uniform #59
Signed as a veteran free agent on November 21, 1973
Pats résumé: three seasons, 24 games (six starts); two interceptions, one pick-six

After getting a late start due to military service, Geddes was an honorable mention All-American DE at UCLA and 14th round draft pick by the Rams in 1970. He was converted to linebacker and spent that first year on the practice squad. Denver claimed him off waivers but he spent '71 on IR. Geddes appeared in all 14 games for the Broncos in '72, with three starts. Chuck Fairbanks picked him up during the '73 seasons and he eventually would play in 24 games for the Patriots, with six starts.

In 1974 Geddes started five games and had two interceptions. Most memorable was an October 13th 24-0 shutout at Shea Stadium over the Jets , to advance to 5-0. It was the latest time in a season the Pats were in first place since I don't know when. The Patriots dominated and Geddes put the exclamation point on the game with a 29-yard pick-six.

Among other things in his post-football career Geddes was the CEO of TBA Global, a corporation that ''produces live events that communicate messages and create brand marketing experiences for global corporations. These events include corporate business meetings, product launches, consumer marketing programs, sponsored music tours, entertainment programming for fairs, festivals and special events and management services for some of today's leading musical artists and performers.''

Happy 33rd birthday to Eric Tomlinson
Born April 22, 1946 in Oklahoma City; raised in Klein, Texas
Patriot tight end, 2019; uniform #82
Signed as a veteran free agent on October 15, 2019
Pats résumé: one season, two games (two starts); one reception for one yard

The term "[I}Ventroned[/I]" would be more aptly named "[/I]Tomlinsoned[/I]". The journeyman was involved in more than sixty transactions over the course of his ten-year NFL career. Tomlinson was in New England for two weeks, getting two starts in a double tight end formation. His Pats highlight was a one-yard reception, in a 33-0 vicory over the Jets in New Jersey.

Other football players born on this date with New England connections include:

Mike Buck, 58 (4/22/1967)
Buck went to the University of Maine, where he set an amazing 27 Black Bears records. He was a sixth round pick, 156th overall by the Saints in the 1990 draft. He also spent time with Arizona and Miami, and saw action in twelve NFL games. Buck was later involved in Arena football, as a head coach and director of football operations. He now coaches high school football in his native Long Island.

Ed Bradley, 75 (4/22/1950)
Not to be confused with the former 60 Minutes journalist, this Ed Bradley was a middle linebacker who was born in Bridgeport, and grew up in Stratford CT. His father was a pro football player too, who also played minor league baseball with the Red Sox. Bradley was a fourth round pick (88th overall) by the Steelers in the 1972 draft. He picked up two Superbowl rings with Pittsburgh, and made a contribution by replacing an injured Jack Lambert in Super Bowl IX. Bradley also played with Seattle and San Francisco, appearing in 93 NFL games with 32 starts from 1972-78.
