Patriots Player Departure BREAKING: Joe Milton traded to Dallas

5 years, $230 million…. But then they did the thing a couple times where they convert salary to bonus so they spread the cap hit out over the following 5 years.

That’s a great cap management strategy for someone like Mahomes who just ain’t going anywhere. But if Watson leaves the team after his contract expires next year (and I can’t imagine Cleveland extending him), it all becomes due.

The Browns can restructure again if they want but ultimately will have to take a total of a $130 million cap hit for him in ‘26 and ‘27 (assuming ‘26 is his last year in Cleveland).
I thought it was interesting that Haslem admitted it was a swing and a miss. Owners know that there is no way around QB contracts. For a mediocre QB like say Darnold is still going to get upwards of 35 to 40 million.. I believe they will hold onto Watson until they feel like they can get off the contract or find a team desperate enough to take him. Watson went from top 5 to not even mentioned at all. As a fan it would be nice to see this once great player find his way again.. but between the legal issues and injuries I think Watson is closer to the end of his career than a resurrection.

What has Joe freakin' Milton done to warrant a comparison to TFB? Go Ahead, I'll wait.
Was watching some reports on things with Milton.. he was praised as a hard worker and great teammate. The issues were people in the locker room and Oganization felt he had some entitlement too him and that he was on Parr with Drake. So that would ultimately cause issues. Also with Vrabel stating removing entitlement in his opening press conference. He wants every player to earn thier spots.

Except Tom Brady has more character in his pinky finger, than Milton has in his whole body. Brady was the consummate warrior & competitor from college through the pro's. Milton never showed any these qualities in his 6 college & 1 pro season.
Are you Patriots staff? What I saw was a professional athlete competing.

Milton has showed nothing to deserve this amount of ruckus

Brady, through practice work, earned a 4th qb spot and rose to the 2nd in depth chart

The staff deserves benefit of the doubt in this one, unless Milton explodes in Dallas out of the gate or something

Exactly. This kid got his one shot to start sitting on the bench all year. It was his Superbowl. He showed Exactly what Brady would have done if he had a shot as a seventh rounder. Disgrace... the kid showed moxie and that as a coach is what I would want. Compete.. didn't even let him show up for training camp. Awful..Glad your happy. Jules would have been traded in your thoughts. Jules had a punt return for td in a preseason game to stick around on this team. MILTON gave it his all...as a Patriot as a bottom pick. He's a player, baller i.m.o.

Reading through this thread and I think back to this play and how many Pats fans were excited about this guy and wanted to see him get a chance to start. Look at that arm!

I didn’t see it mentioned in this thread, but Breer the other day had mentioned how the Rams are basically year to year on Stafford now, don’t have an impressive QB room but do have an abundance of 6th rounders. Alex Van Pelt is there now and they did not feel the need to offer anything for the 25 year old.

Now that a few days have passed and there has been some follow-up reporting, it seems clear to me why he was traded now.

OTAs are this week. Vrabes views this as an opportunity to establish culture- specifically for only players who want to be here. While it's been reported Milton worked hard, he wanted to start. Not sure he would cause a problem but clearly the team did not want this to be a pot'l issue.

I do think if he was a bit younger and the team felt he had a super-high ceiling, they might have made more of an effort to get him to stay.

At the end of the day he didn't want to be here. Thats it.

Cherrie picker...
  • Matt Cassel:
After serving as a backup to Tom Brady, Cassel started for the Patriots in 2008 after Brady suffered an injury. He was later traded to the Kansas City Chiefs and went on to play for the Chiefs, Bills, Vikings, Cowboys, and Titans.

  • Brian Hoyer:
Hoyer played for the Patriots as a backup, and later started for teams like the Cleveland Browns, Houston Texans, Chicago Bears, and San Francisco 49ers.

  • Jacoby Brissett:
Brissett, who was a backup to Tom Brady, went on to start for the Indianapolis Colts.

  • Joe Milton III:
Milton was traded to the Dallas Cowboys after serving as a backup for the Patriots.

  • Drew Bledsoe:
Bledsoe was the Patriots starting quarterback for 9 seasons before being traded to the Buffalo Bills. He later signed with the Dallas Cowboys as a starter.

  • Jarrett Stidham:
Stidham was a backup for the Patriots and is now a backup for the Denver Broncos.
And they forgot Jimmy Garapalo....

No love for Rohan Davey, Kevin O’Connell, Ryan Mallett, Bailey Zappe, and Malik Cunningham?

Here's how I saw it. Wolf saw a project QB in the late rounds someone who had a rocket arm and athletic abilities that any coach would love. The team actually did a great thing for Joe and his career. Letting him develop here and we can all debate about it being to soon ect. But the main theme is he was developing and wanted to go someplace he could be a starter and he has a real chance when dak goes down again. When Dobbs was signed that was a clear sign Milton was going to be moved. I like Joe Milton and I hope he does well in the league. However the QB that I'm all in on, and want to see reach his potential in Drake.

Loved the input, thanks

(While it's been reported Milton worked hard, he wanted to start. Not sure he would cause a problem)....what.....are you sh!tting me. Isn't that what you want as a competitor? Really Vrabel, you kicked this kid because he wants to start and be the best? Huh...no disrespect but...G.T.F.O.H. He says he Wants competition at all levels???

I'm relaying what I read. I take no offense. I have nothing against Milton.

There is "wanting to start" and there is "causing a problem/issue". They are not the same. Clearly the team felt he would not rest easy being #3 or #2.

I know you are passionate about Milton but it's obvious he wanted to start, knew Drake was the guy, and didn't want to be here.

As a consequence they moved him.

That's it.

There’s more to the story than this. What he did week 18 is your answer. Had he done this earlier in the season, he stays.

No. I disagree. As Tony Montana from Scarface would say....Revengay.....Front office and fans was pissed he won the game last year. Wrong guy to blame. All Mayo had to do was call all run plays, he didn't, he gone. My eyes don't lie. That kid showed promise and yes I admit it, it was fun to watch offense . I'm not mad they shipped him, it's the why that's bugging me. Front office, dead silent, Vrabel? Elliot, anything other than it's best for the team...yeah...run that up the flagpole...
