I thought it was interesting that Haslem admitted it was a swing and a miss. Owners know that there is no way around QB contracts. For a mediocre QB like say Darnold is still going to get upwards of 35 to 40 million.. I believe they will hold onto Watson until they feel like they can get off the contract or find a team desperate enough to take him. Watson went from top 5 to not even mentioned at all. As a fan it would be nice to see this once great player find his way again.. but between the legal issues and injuries I think Watson is closer to the end of his career than a resurrection.5 years, $230 million…. But then they did the thing a couple times where they convert salary to bonus so they spread the cap hit out over the following 5 years.
That’s a great cap management strategy for someone like Mahomes who just ain’t going anywhere. But if Watson leaves the team after his contract expires next year (and I can’t imagine Cleveland extending him), it all becomes due.
The Browns can restructure again if they want but ultimately will have to take a total of a $130 million cap hit for him in ‘26 and ‘27 (assuming ‘26 is his last year in Cleveland).
