Patriots Player Departure BREAKING: Joe Milton traded to Dallas

The point is that Milton as back-up QB is worth much more than a 5th round rookie, even if its another QB
do back up QB's typically have a trade value? I'm not talking guys like Brett Favre, but bottom of the roster, only plays in preseason games, blowouts, the starter is injured, or if your coach who knows hes getting fired and wants to **** over his teams draft position type guys...

hard pressed coming up with any equivalent situations here to see what other teams were able to secure as trade compensation...

If he did start running his mouth, this does start to make sense

Draft-value wise, is hard to think we "won"

Milton costed us a 6th (2024) and a 7th(2025) for a comp pick in the 5th (2025). Pretty worthless for Backup QB with potential and 3 more years of cheap contract
We got a 5th instead of cutting Milton and lost one of our three 7th rounders.

The very late 5th is essentially equal to the 6th we didn't have.

A couple of options could be a kicker or a #3 QB, both reasonable uses of 6th rounder.

I dont really care that they traded him. But if they traded him because of locker room drama I certainly hope they didn't have a better trade offer but did him a solid. F$%CK THAT!

QBs with potential definitely have some trade value, at least until it's clear(er) what his ceilling is.

This is weird trade, no 2 ways about it. Unless Milton was indeed brushin people off in the new management (read Vrabel)

You are assuming the cut, though (which I get the Culture angle)

But then you hit the nail in the head, the "value" of picks is pretty much nothing since all late rounds are trully a crapshot

i don't put any stock into that he was brushing Vrabes off... Otherwise he'd be getting ready to start on the assembly line of Doomed Quarterbacks at the Factory of Sadness...

I mean it’s pretty obvious. Brady was turning 40, they expected some decline or a slow down that they could use to make the switch. Brady had an MVP year and it became impossible to move him and sell it to fans.

Likewise, Jimmy’s agent wasn’t going to do the Pats any favors. Jimmy was getting paid.
Brady was 37 when they drafted Jimmy, but yeah.

Ofds of a 5th rounder becoming a quality nfl starter
4-5%

So if we had 100 5th round picks, 4 might become starters

We got one compensatory 5th rounder
Essentially worthless or best case an end of roster backup AND we gave up top of the 7th round pick
For the most valuable position in sports
No offense but you kinda made a case against yourself here. Statistically speaking, we gave up nothing for nothing…it’s a wash. Of course reality might be completely different; we’ll just have to see how it all unfolds.

One benefit I can see is that we’ve made it perfectly clear that this is Maye’s team. No one’s gonna be screaming for Dobbs if Maye has a couple of bad outings.

The Pats also did Milton a solid by trading him to a team where he has a legit chance to play next season. Dak’s status with the Cowboys isn’t rock solid and he always gets hurt.

My two cents…

How do you know Milton is not “cerebral”
This is pure unsupported wild speculation

No, some of us actually write statements based off of education rather than ignorance. I have been following Joe since his college days at Michigan and Tennessee. I know this is hard for you to understand, but there are people who know more about football and players than you do. I know that comes as a shock, but Joe Milton has never been known for his brain. That is just a fact whether you accept it or not.

We also spent 2 picks for a player that didn't want to play, getting 1 back

Draft-value wise, only the infamous JJ board is going to tell how much we ""won""
Of course. We won't know if we "won" the trade until players actually play.

But if us fans want to be in the equity and asset management business, we got back more than what we spent.

Vrabel wanted his own backup QB's.
Veteran backup: Dobbs replaces Bissett.
A youngster TBD will replace Milton.
============
Isn't the situation that simple?

Really? You saw the playbook and know the system already? So in the impure parts, what system are they following?
Vrabel said it himself. They are not running "Josh's offense" from when he was here but an evolution of it.

I'm sure they'll be EP concepts in it but pure terminology standpoint it won't be. Josh said this today.

Bad trade. Bad, bad, bad. I guess the amateurs (i.e. ownership) is still running the front office, ugh. The Patriots should have held out for more. And if they could not get a good deal, they would still have a great backup

I HOPE DRAKE IS REAL. LOOSING THE BACKUP FOR NOTHING RIGHT NOW IS NOT OK FOR ME. IMHO

People on this site always overrate this very type of player.

The win at the end of the season looks worse & worse.

Three possibilities:

1. Eliot Wolf is in control of personnel. He doesn't know what he is doing and this is a terrible trade.

2. Mike Vrabel is in control of personnel. He doesn't know what he is doing and this is a terrible trade.

3. Mike Vrabel is in control of personnel, and this is a good trade.

I can't believe (3) so I'm hoping to God it's (1).

The face of Patriot fans when they found out about the player dump.

The Patriots don’t want Maye to have any competition because they know a portion of the fans would call for Milton if Maye
Struggles

So the eliminated the competition by trading him for basically nothing

The 2025 version of the Patriot Way

This trade only makes sense if the rumors are true and Milton was vocal in the locker room about feeling like he should be the QB1, which is insane given his draft position. The Pats will probably use the Dallas pick to take another developmental QB, who hopefully will understand his role.
