Patriots Player Departure BREAKING: Joe Milton traded to Dallas

I didn't think about the Prescott rumors - worth mentioning. I don't know how much validity there is to those, at least right now, but he's in his 30s and has never been all that impressive while also being grossly overpaid so I could see it at some point.

And we e gave back a seventh too.

Essentially looks like they just wanted him gone . Terrible trade . Just looks like a desperate measure where you want to discard a player even to the detriment of team.
Kowtowing to a 6th rounder instead of maximizing value for your team desperate for assets. And people are unironically defending it.

I agree. I thought Milton and a 7th for a 4th and a 6th. Clearly, I also do not know what I am talking about.
4th vs a 5th? eh, both are day 3 picks, so its close enough not to beat yourself up over...

I think the guys who thought he was worth a 2 or a 3 are the most vocally disappointed here.

while back I post a poll asking about his trade value... the largest percentage of people here though his trade value was a second round pick, followed by a third...

That's what I've been saying. They had NO reason to trade him this year. And, even if he wanted out, too bad! You keep him one more season and if he develops, then you can get more. This trade (especially the "compensation"), was ridiculous.
Only two legitimate reasons to trade him for low value like that. First, if Josh McDaniels had no faith that he would learn his system. Second, if Milton was going to be a locker room problem with staying on the bench. We don’t know the answer to either of those yet. Otherwise, I just don’t see the point in trading him since teams are incentivized nowadays to have a 3rd QB on the roster, and he’s making 6th round rookie contract money.

The better offer was don’t trade him and have your backup QB make 700K a season and potentially improve his trade value if he’s forced into action or simply has a stellar preseason. Don’t trade him is the better move.

Not one interception, what if he starts throwing them every game like Mac Jones.

It’s not the media the coaches have to worry about, it’s the lockerroom. The players will see another young 6’5” beast in there as wonder why he isn’t getting a shot as the losses pile up.
Even still, you don't really care that Joe Milton is behind your 3rd overall QB in his second year as a pro. Maybe if it was a decent backup prospect like Garoppolo was, but Joe Milton has always been getting a little bit overrated around these parts to think he was a serious threat to Maye's job. Such is the enamoration with late round QBs in the New England area and the idea of them taking over the starter's job, though.

I don't like the trade, especially on this date. His value may have been higher during the draft or maybe after preseason.

That said, this is really trading a 7th and a back up qb who should never play for the patriots for a possible position player who could contribute.

I get it, just don't like it

So, do we think that Dallas will give Milton a chance to be their starter?

I don’t see how this trade makes the Pats better.

Unless Milton was making noise behind the scenes I don’t see any reason to do this.

Very disappointing move.

I certainly would have held on through training camp and see if some team had a more urgent need.
Milton was an asset and they sold really low.

Milton would have been QB2 if not for Vrabel’s love affair with Dobbs. And I don’t care if Maye becomes Andrew Luck and Milton becomes Andy Dalton. You traded Dalton for nothing and paid (Dobbs) Hoyer three times as much. Like I said, this was about controlling the locker room and not opening themselves up to second guessing.

Watching everyone freak out because they gave him away is funny. Clearly, none of us here on this forum know what the hell we are talking about. Everyone here thought he was worth more. Some guys wanted a 2nd. I seem to recall someone wanted a 1st. So.. who's right? Us, sitting on the computer, picking our ass and yelling "Ma! The meatloaf!!" or the pros in the NFL. Obviously it's us.

The pros thought that Brady was only worthy of the 199th pick.
The HOF is chock full of players at every position who the pros drafted after non-HOF players.
None of us know how most young players will turn out given the chance. They're all different.
The real freak out would come if Maye turns out to be a bust and Milton turns into a QB.

So they traded him to the cowboys out of respect despite a better offer? wtf

To me this says Milton must not fit in the McD offense, so better to get what we can for him now rather than dump him after he struggles in camp.

Basically traded him for a mulligan on having drafted him to begin with.

Disappointing but whatever.

They better not use a pick on a backup QB or this is a net loss. Sign a vet.

...

...

Rodgers anyone?

Not sure why people are so miffed that they passed on a "better offer" (probably a 4th) to send him to his preferred destination. Is it worse for the team? Marginally so, yes, but it also buys some good will for the front office. Players on the roster or who sign to the roster in the future will appreciate this, knowing that the team isn't conducting cutthroat business and always taking only the very best offer even if the player hates it.

Like you, I did consider the reports that he wanted to be traded and also how Josh viewed his compatibility regarding the offense. Even so, it was still a bad trade. Getting a 5th Round Pick is one thing, but having to send them a 7th Round one makes it just really lousy.
