I am curious about the money

I am curious about the money
he was tendered at the lowest level, so i would hazard a guess its on the cheaper side... under 5m i'd guess

edit... dont know about year two, but spotrac has him tabbed at 4.8m this year...

We got plenty of money.
We do. But how much 'plenty' that is depends on whether this would fall within the 'Rule of 51' or not. As of now, I don't believe it would, but I'm not Miguel. That's where the curiosity is, because it's right on the line.

I think of Rule of 51 as a very temporary thing.
Leads to cutting Lawyer Millay, for example.
You’re under the cap on Sep 1 then over when the full 53 and practice squad count.

And I think the 51 cutoff is under $1M, not under $5M.

Rule of 51 refers to the 51 largest contracts on the 53-man roster. It should be over the threshold, but it's close - and really, that's the only interesting thing about it.

Like, your first round pick this year will cost more than that.

Vrabes matched the offer the Raiders made for LB Christian Elliss

Good depth signing... glad to see him back
Who? I rarely noticed him out there.

It says here on NFL reference he signed an offer sheet with the raiders...

edit: Oh we matched the offer sheet.

he's going to cost us 4.8 million!

You must not have been watching, maybe you were pulling the remote out of the TV screen.

The top 51 isn't largest contracts necessarily. It's largest salaries. In the offseason, the amount you've spent against the cap includes all signing bonus amortization set to count on your cap and the salaries of the top 51 players.

Right now per OTC, our 51st player is Jaheim Bell and our 52nd player is Dell Pettus, both making a $960K salary. Included in the top 51 is Elliss on his $3.3M RFA tender, which will be updated to reflect his reported $4.8M cap hit in year 1 once details emerge. So this deal will only cost $1.5M of our cap space and won't change who's in our top 51.

Our 1st round pick's signing bonus proration will count against our cap, as well his salary. But he'll push someone else out of the top 51, so whatever his cap hit is you can reduce by the $960K. That will be the case for every player we sign. Most of the salaries after the 1st round pick won't even be in our top 51, so really it's just the signing bonus amortization that will hit. That's why when you sign rookies it only will take away like $8M of cap space but then if they all make the team and you add up their cap hits it will count like $15M.

Once the season starts, you go back to counting all 53 roster spots so you have to add in about $2M to account for those extra 2 salaries. Also factoring in that anyone on IR still counts and then their replacement also counts, so you do need to leave room for those type of roster moves.

maybe we got a zack baun here... late bloomer kind of thing
Or just like his brother Kaden Elliss, who also didn’t really have a defensive role until year 4. He’s been a full time starter for the Falcons the past two seasons, 6th in the league in tackles and most pressures by an off ball LB this past season.

Interesting move. I figured with the LB room being crowded...we would have let him go to Vegas...

I like it for short money, he flashed in some games last year. He would have a great half and then be invisible in the second half in some games but I'm not sure I can name another LB on the team that played better than him overall.
He fits the new style of defense, young still. Might be a spot starter/role player but he at least showed something last year.
