The concern I have is too much money has been spent on defense. Williams and Davis had no business getting the money they got. Bill did this in his last years and it backfired. The players he drafted and signed weren’t very good and the offense was severely neglected.

There’s a ton of pressure on Wolf to land an impact player or two in this draft on offense or it will set this team back again for a few years.

I feel like the players we signed were different makers and starting level players on D.. to your point the drafting had gotten so bad to the roster eroding.. Vrabel knew he had to over pay just to get talent. We are all waiting for the team to do the obvious on offense.. at this point

We stand to be much more athletic In our front then the 01 defense.. now I know your saying is my guy Real fan crazy.. lol.. just think for a minute.. we ran a 2 gap system that doesn't Really allow for the DL to rush as often, we have a one gap wich puts pressure on the OL every snap while eliminating the run game.. hard to even compare to those great defenses.. but we Stand to be more athletic at the very least.

They could exploit and take advantage of your weaknesses, whatever area.
They could outplay your average areas more often than not.
They could limit and mitigate your strengths, no matter what they were

That’s a great recipe describing how to win consistently in this league.

As long as you can build and maintain a team like that you’ll compete at the highest level.

Might even become a dynasty. But it’s rare to be able to do that, and to maintain it through injuries and turnover. Quite an accomplishment.

The key really is lack of weakness. A team that has no below average players in starter or key reserve roles will win a lot of games.

Carter or adding another rusher like chase young would make us where no one wants to see us.. the 2 gap system is why Wilfork or Ted Washington never had the sack numbers as they occupied blockers and handled the run.. it's also why Seymour never had the extreme sack numbers.. although his impact was fierce. Williams, landry, spillane, Barmore, white.. that is a beast of a front 7.. with gonzo& Davis locking up the perimeter and peppers and Dugger punishing TEs and RBs lucky to get across the line of scrimmage.

Based on how they haven't acquired a starting left tackle in FA... and hearing comments from Vrabel on their emphasis on protecting Drake Maye... I'm 99% sure it will be Will Campbell at 4 and they will plug him in at LT and hope his tape dominating the top SEC rushers translates to the NFL, despite his wingspan.

My take on this is the reverse Mamula Principle. In other words, the same that statistics can be a great tool in evaluating talent, it should never be the only evaluation metric. Guys get over drafted based solely on some aspect of their combine (speed being a common one) results all the time. I'm pretty sure guys get under-drafted for the opposite reason of not getting one stat or another in the right "zone".

As you stated, another metric should absolutely be actual play of the individual. Decisions should always be based on as much input as possible.

Ok. We are here. Brady 2001, Troy Brown, David Patten and Antwain Smith with a great defense.. Let's see if Douglas, Bourne, a rookie back and Left tackle with a Solid defense. It has been done, it's doable...

The difference in 2001 was that Brady had an OL that could protect him coached by one of the all-time great OL coaches in Dante scarnecchia.

Brady, the GOAT QB, made chicken salad out of spare parts but at least he was given the time to orchestrate the offense.

In the years leading up to Bill's demise, the spending was extremely lopsided, twice as much money was spent on defensive players as offensive players. When you allocate only 1/3 the budget to offense and you draft horrifically as well, it's inevitable that the offense will suck.

We could certainly trade down and draft 2 LTs in the first 2 rounds (2 shots at getting our 3 year starter.

You're right someone could want to trade up for Graham or one of the OT's Membou, Campbell or Will Johnson possibly.

Not to mention his most recent injury was a non-contact ACL tear that happened this January, and the Packers GM already announced Watson is expected to miss the start of the season. Even when he’s been on the field he’s had trouble with drops throughout his short career.
