What’s our plan at Wide Receiver?

Curran mentioned today on his weekly WEEI appearance that something is in the works to getting that WR. Who? Who knows. I tend to agree that without elite or borderline elite WRs it's hard for Drake to reach his potential. What can help Drake is the offense being fluid, converting 3rd downs, utilizing the RBs in the passing game. The fluidity in the offense would immensely help Drake to Ascend.. but to your point we need a play maker for him.

I wish I believed this was based on some sort of source but it's probably just pure conjecture.

That said I do still think some sort of unexpected trade for either WR and/or LT would not be a surprise. We have so much cap room still available and we will have to get creative to spend it all. (Yes clearly just conjecture on my part but I'm not a paid journalist)

My prediction: Aiyuk and Kupp.

Aiyuk something of a diva, but that apparently comes with the territory. I really don't see him staying put at the 49ers, so it's just a question of price - 49ers likely need to eat some of his contract given his injury and immaturity.

Kupp over the hill a bit, but very solid and provides good leadership.
My ideal scenario would be getting Kupp for that mature experienced leader and someone who always get separation, and Hunter falling to #4 since he'd almost certainly be drafted here to play WR with the CB spots accounted for. Kupp for the reliable target for the short term and Hunter for the high ceiling long term. And neither would be as expensive as Aiyuk.

Yeah pretty much. I tend to believe that something will transpire regarding Milton he has tremendous up side. Teams will be in on him. I think a WR is more likely than a LT.. I've been feeling this way for weeks now that it's likely Campbell in the draft or Membou.

The other thing Curran and Perry talked about was avoiding bringing in one of these selfish a**hole types that going to demand the rock from a young QB and possibly stunt his growth. So that would mean drafting a playmaker and bringing in a vet to mentor the young'ins. Is that Kupp? I know it ain't Diggs or freakin' Pickens.

They entered this offseason with:

the worst WR room in the NFL
0 starting caliber OTs
only 2 starting caliber interior OL for 3 spots (Onwenu & Strange)
only 1 NFL caliber DT and that guy is recovering from blood clots
0 starting caliber edge rushers unless Keion White learns how to contain the QB
one of the worst LB position groups in the NFL
no #2 CB, no coverage FS

Add it all out and they probably needed:

2 starting WRs
2 starting OTs
1 IOL starter
2 starting EDGE defenders
1 starting DT
1 starting CB
1 starting FS
1-2 starting LBs

It's very hard to add 11-12 solid pieces in one offseason. Some of that likely goes unaddressed. In the game of musical chairs, I suspect a true #1 WR might be one of those unaddressed spots.

Regarding WR's I think Vrabel thinks he can break the curse. It's not like we couldn't hit when we spent Draft capital at the position: it's just that BB choose the wrong ones. You how I feel about WR's but we have to sure up that LT spot: No WR is getting open with that Jag Lowe @ LT. That said I would take a Tackle on a Trade Down and Double dip @ WR in the Second and Third: I think they're some Gems available. Also I would move a Third Rounder to the 49ers for Brandon Aiyuk.
I get the Lowe skepticism …I do.

BUT, objectively Lowe vastly outperformed Cam Robinson last season and had dysfunction all around him both on the line and the coaching staff.

AVP had an inexplicable inability to know when and how to help the LT, compounded by the fact that RT also sucked as did…every orher spot including Onwenu for stretches. It was like watching the O-line version of ****ty whack-a-mole every week.

Shoring up RT with a competent pro, Strange being even league average at C, Onwenu showing up in shape and only focusing on RG, plus anyone they add at LG gives Josh Mcd the freedom to just help out Lowe at LT when necessary.

Josh HAS proven to be very good at designing plays to help out the weak tackle going back decades.

While a rookie who proves good and can start early would be awesome, I’m not writing off Lowe’s ability to be league average with some help just yet.

Now…as for WR: I’d absolutely plan on drafting two AGAIN until someone pops.

The price for them is skyrocketing…same with Tackles. So to me it’s good business to draft one of each every damned year.

My plan would be to:

- Get Evan Engram here. At minimum...he can be a good target for Maye.

- Sign Kupp after he is released....

- Draft a WR with our second, third, or 2nd third round draft pick after taking BPA/OT.

- Trade Bourne to clear a WR log jam (the Niners might want him back).

- Give JaLynn Polk a swift kick in the arse.

- Coach up Javon Baker.

- Let Pop be Pop.

- Let Mack Hollins dazzle us with game day outfits!
You gain exactly nothing by cutting Polk before Josh has had a chance to work with him.

The time to get rid of any of WR we already have in late in camp.

Okay... hear me out... Tyler Warren at #4... sign Kyle Juszczyk... roll out the 3 TE / 1 FB offense. Who needs WRs?
If you do that, you get Arroyo and have him play Move TE.

Pop Douglas gets WAY too many aura points on this board.

Dude really hasn’t been special.
He was adequate when the rest of the guys sucked. Shone by comparison.

Well I talked about what they started the offseason with, so yeah.

They've made a pretty significant dent in their needs list this year. A few viable multi year/long term solutions and a few stop gaps/depth signings. The options for viable multi year/long term solutions are drying up quickly though. I think Guard is probably the only need area left where I feel good about getting a long term option - a guy you pencil in as a starter for like 3 years. Everything else is down to shorter term stop gaps and lottery tickets. As is usually the case in FA where a limited number of good players are out there and 31 other teams compete for them.

He had a good year in 2023 under BOB. Reasonable to think he can get back to that form under Josh McDaniels. It seemed clear that AVP didn't really want to use a slot receiver.

Agree.. just draft tackles, CB, wide receivers and DE. Other positions can be had through free agency or mid level veterans.
