Patriots Player Departure Davon Godchaux Traded For 2026 7th To New Orleans

Overthecap shows $900k more than that for 2025, they agree on 2026. I wonder what the disconnect is? Regardless, I’m happy they were able to get something for someone who was no longer a scheme fit, isn’t a star, who the team felt had a bad attitude last year, and where all other 31 teams knew the above.
I think Daniels is accounting for the replacement in the top 51, while OverTheCap doesn’t. I did not follow Patscap over to Bluesky, but that’s his preferred way of representing cap impacts so it wouldn’t surprise me if Daniels just got it straight from him.

...and got some cap relief from his guaranteed salary.

I think White is moving inside.

Thank you — that makes perfect sense, and is technically correct.

7th on a WR.

Chess vs Checkers.

That's most likely the case. Which is perfectly fine, but the same is true in reverse - e.g., signing a player with a first year cap hit of $2M will displace a player with a ~$1M cap hit, so the effective cap space loss from that signing will only reduce cap space by $1M instead of $2M, at least while top 51 rules are in place.

Does trading him instead of cutting him save anymore on the cap? Seems a little spiteful not to just cut him and set him free over a 7th rounder 2 years from now.
It saves more to trade him because he had $4M salary guaranteed this year. If we cut him, that becomes part of our dead money. By trading him to a new team, they're responsible for his salary. The only dead money we retain is the unamortized portion of previously paid signing bonuses. So he counts on our cap for $6.67M this year. If we had cut him, that $4M becomes gets tacked on, though I believe it would have been offset by whatever he signs for next year with a credit on the cap next year.

Included in that $6.67M is the amount of signing bonus that was set to amortize on this year's cap and next year's. If we had waited until June 1st, the amount set to count next year could have been left in next year's. Ultimately, we can just sit on that cap space now and roll it over to next to cover it, so it's always preferrable to get the cap now and then just roll it over to cover the deferral if you don't want to use it. BUT, it makes sense to do now because you never know if interested teams would move on and can't bank on an injury drumming up interest.

He's been a under-performer since he got here. Was not a dominant run stopper, and rarely provided any interior pass rushing threat.
Let's upgrade with Milton in FA, or another draft pick in the middle rounds.
They also extended Pharms - who played with more violence than Godchaux - while not being as big.

If on the team, Godchaux's cap number was set to be:

Guaranteed base salary - $4M
Per game roster bonuses - $850K
Workout bonuses - $150K
Signing bonus amortization - $3.33M
Total = $8.33M.

By trading him, NO takes on the top 3 categories ($5M), so we're left with $3.33M. There was set to be another $3.33M of signing bonus amortization that gets accelerated onto the cap now so our total dead money is $6.67M. So against the $8.33M cap number, we save $1.67M.

Practically speaking, now a $960K salary takes his place in our top 51 calc. So the net savings are actually $710K.

This is going to be like Parcells and Belichick's first couple years.... except for a handful of players, everybody else is gone. Near complete roster turnover. And who can blame them.

I'll have no problem with Year 2 of BB.

Year 2 of Tuna was the playoffs.

The only thing more embarrassing than getting traded for a future 7th rounder is getting traded for a future conditional 7th rounder.

Hard to believe this is what the Pats get in return for “one of the best DT’s in the league”.

Probably the weirdest comment made by BB.

Glad he’s gone and I’m hoping Tavai and Wise are next.

Why haven’t they signed him yet? The Pats asleep at the wheel yet again.
Did you forget the sarcasm flag?

Or that Williams wasn’t cut so they couldn’t sign him until FA started?
