I don't know if he was a placeholder for Vrabel. I tend to think they eff'd up with the contract and painted themselves in a corner, only to have the guy they really wanted become available as they were, essentially, walking down the aisle to marry Mayo. Then I think they doubled down on the eff up when they said fekk it, let's see how he does. I have said all along that Mayo's mandate was to Not Be Bill. Not winning, not rebuilding, not teaching... just be 180 degrees from Bill.
To your point, the Thunder comment was far too chummy for a rookie HC to be making. He was in over his head from the word go, and a big part of that is RKK's doing, in my opinion anyway.
Just don't be like Bill was Jerod. Everything else will take care of itself.
Regardless, Vrabel is here, and they are clearly back to being at the very least taken seriously in the NFL.
