I get your hesitation, but if we bring in a bridge LT we could afford to have Simmons redshirt, imo. If we go with Alaric who I think could be our 4 year starter then I think we should skip Simmons. I know people say don't draft for need, but need always plays a part as well as positional value. He's been my favourite LT all along, but he's going to need a redshirt year and we can't afford that from a first round pick. He has the same injury as Cole Strange that took a year to mend and Simmons' injury happened in Nov which effectively means he'll miss the whole of next season.
I think he's better than Campbell but it's not a big margin. If Simmons was a 'best in the league' type prospect then it maybe worth waiting for but I don't think he's that. the other question is whether he can fully recover and knee issues are no joke.I get your hesitation, but if we bring in a bridge LT we could afford to have Simmons redshirt, imo. Why can't we afford that? Are you worried about it hurting the competitive chances of the team that's going to start the offseason with less talent than anyone else in the world. He's been my favourite LT all along, but he's going to need a redshirt year and we can't afford that from a first round pick. Because the rebuild needs to start sooner than later and it's not as though Simmons is so good that he's worth waiting for at the expense of adding talent this year. Why can't we afford that? I'd love to be one of those huge 1-year turnaround stories. They should sign good stop gap vets wherever they can to try to facilitate that. But for the draft picks that they're going to sign to 4, potentially 5 year deals, I'm not freaking out because of year 1 returns on the pick because our roster really isn't set up to be good anyway.
Simmons is still growing into the position. Hes getting better... Much more upside.I think he's better than Campbell but it's not a big margin. So is Will Campbell. He's a year younger than Simmons.Simmons is still growing into the position. Hes getting better... Much more upside.
and is possibly better suited as a guard? So is Will Campbell. He's a year younger than Simmons.
There are plenty of people I respect who think he can be a LT. We should get verification on that this time next week.and is possibly better suited as a guard?
they need to speed up the combine timingThere are plenty of people I respect who think he can be a LT. We should get verification on that this time next week.
There aren't that many, actually. Ben Watson is the only Patriot I can think of. Willis McGahee also comes to mind.Basically, I just don't want him to be the next Dominique Easley.
I don't know the answer to this so I'm sure you can all provide plenty of examples, but how many times do first round worthy prospects who have redshirted their rookie year for injury, gone on to have first round worthy careers? Genuine question.
Thank you. There aren't that many, actually. Ben Watson is the only Patriot I can think of. Willis McGahee also comes to mind.
OK, for context, here are the PFF numbers for Josh Simmons:
Josh Simmons LT stats 2022 - 2024
Overall, looking at LT play only (Simmons played RT in 2022):
• 19 games
• 1,130 total snaps
• 601 pass block snaps
• 1 sack = 0.17% of pass block snaps
• 4 hits and 10 hurries = 2.33% of pass block snaps
The sack % is better than for Banks, Campbell, Ersery, or Conerly
The hits and hurries % is not as good as for Banks (1.94%) or Conerly (2.20%) but better than for Campbell or Ersery (both about 2.8%).
In 2024 Simmons played in 6 games before his injury. The opponents were Akron, Western Michigan, Marshall, Michigan State, Iowa, and Oregon. There were 454 total snaps, 158 pass block snaps. He yielded zero sacks, zero hits, and one hurry. I don't know if he went up against Mike Green, that would have been the only highly rated Edge he would have faced this year. Still, that's an awesome performance.
They draft this guy, I'm going to be a happy dude, maybe even at #4 but definitely if coupled with a trade down.
In fact, if they do that in combination with signing a veteran LT in free agency, such as a Cam Robinson, for less money than they'd need to spend on Alaric Jackson or Ronnie Stanley, I'd be absolutely onboard. I'd still prefer Jackson or Stanley with the drafting of someone else at #4, but its a "1a versus 1b" deal for me now. The thing I like about 1b over 1a is using some FA money on a second big time FA at a position of need, of which there are many.
