Offseason player acquisition thread

Apparently it’s cut candidate article week. Good look into who else is likely going to come available. Also always interesting to see where people draw the line between cut and trade, for example Kupp and Conklin.

Cowboys Zach Martin has announced he is retiring. Don't be surprised if Jerrah goes after Tevin Jenkins as a result.. Though, we may be able to swing a trade with them for one of Sow or Strange..

Wasn't defensive at all, just wanted to know why you thought he can't play left guard. Thought Maybe I was missing something.
The plan will change depending on the rest of the off season, but Smith gives you flexibility, he can play either guard position so if Onwenu at RT ends up the best option there Smith goes to RG, if you get a better option at RT then he plays LG.
Onwenu comes in out of shape again and has a down year you can cut him after the season, it just opens all kinds of options and you get a pro bowl caliber lineman which you don't have now.
Sign him and CUT Onwenu and you are better off, just an extreme example as to why Smith is a no brainer.
It's not like signing Smith limits them in free agency after that.

He's the best free agent player entering his prime years, you get him and figure out the best option after that.

They need Tackles, not Guards. If they can fix the OL in free agency it gives them the freedom to do what they want in the Draft.

Should be a bunch of Saints on there.

Davante Adams, Cooper Kupp, Jack Conklin, Braden Smith, and Sam Hubbard are all interesting to me.

I've read the option is projected to be $17.4M. I don't think that's cheap. Can't justify giving him that, even if you do want to keep him long term. It'd be harder to sign him to a reasonable long term deal anyway if you give him that outrageous number to fall back on.
There are two questions.

1) Do we want to sign/extend Strange for 2026 for one year for $17.4M guaranteed?

2) Do we want to sign a 3-4 year extension with Strange and for how much.
=========
Personally, my answer is no to both questions. However, if the price is right, Strange might indeed be worth extending on a 3 year deal. He is an average starter and there should be a reasonable price for a very average starter.

IMO, Strange is NOT worth $17.4M. He was just an OK LG and seems to be an OK option at center for 2025.

To put it another way, is there a free agent (or will there be in the next offseason that is a better option than Strange for $17.4M on a 1-year deal?

He should be our primary FA target (even over Stanley), as he's young and not injury prone. He could be our LT for the long-term.
Sign Robinson and Jackson and then build an OL around them for the next several years.

I think they need both, you think Pats are set at guard? Improving the guard position has zero effect on improving the Tackle position.

They both play Left Tackle.
Jackson is younger and improving, Robinson seems to be worse now than he was a few years ago. Robinson had 11 Hurries and 12 pressures in the WC game. He was atrocious in his last 5 games.
Add week 18 against Lions (missing half there pass rushers) and he had 18 Hurries and 21 pressures in his last 2 games YIKES!

Lowe had 22 Hurries and 32 pressures over 13 games.

Historically Robinson has been a good pass protector and weaker run blocker so the pass protection issues are scary.

If Pats can figure out why Robinsons took a step back in play last year (unknown injury, bad coaching?) then maybe? Then you have to assume he can play the right side because Jackson would need to stay on the left.
Robinson would only be on my radar if other options don't happen and you want to take a shot in the dark he'll recapture his former play and he'll take a reasonable contract that you can get out of early.

Ill gladly take either, both would be much better than anything that was there last year. I probably would prioritize jackson for the reasons you listed but Stanley is truly a beast.

Are you presuming that Strange is our starting center? Otherwise, it seems that Onwenu-Strange-Robinson is a reasonable set of guards for 2025.

You say that signing Smith has no effect on the OT position. Isn't it you who thinks that if we sign Smith, Onwenu might move to RT, [perhaps with Robinson starting at RG)?

I would extend Strange. It won’t be a massive deal, and he could be their long term answer at Center. They don’t need to create more holes on the OL.

NO KELCE!!! I wouldn't be opposed to a Davante Adams and such older WR's just for 1 or 2 years (providing we obtain their young replacements within those 2 years, just to give Maye WR's that can get open and develop him as a passer). And, to state the incredibly obvious, use FA to get Alaric Jackson to set us up long term at LG, solidify the rest of the OL, increase the RB talent in the draft, and use FA to also address the DL, Edge, FS, and whatever young players could grow and be part of the hopefully next true Contending/SB Winning Patriots Team. Nailing this and future drafts over the next few years is critical.

Jakobi please.. trade 4 to 6 to raiders for additional second rounder + jakobi and send an additional 6th rounder to raiders.( If Carter is not available )

If they want sanders that bad, they’re giving me Crosby, and their second at the least. If not Id trade it to the saints for just a second and 3rd rd pick. If Brady wants his guy, he has to pay the price. If not the NFC gets him.

This is only if Carter, hunter, and ward have already been drafted.

Their 1st and 2nd this Draft, and Crosby. And, their 2nd in next years Draft. That's the minimum that I'd accept. .

Robinson? I don't think it's safe to assume he'll all of a sudden be an adequate NFL guard. Remember Wolf saying he won't make the same mistake of assuming growth from players going into the 2nd year.
Robinson was a bad guard in 2024. Safest thing is to assume he's a bad guard in 2025 because odds favor that being the case and if he improves, great but don't plan as if he'll be able to be a starter.

I think most likely Smith is LG, Onwenu is RG, and Andrews/Strange is Center.

However, there is free agency, the draft, training camp etc. that will change the roster and Smith gives you the flexibility, if it ends up being the best thing to do, of moving Onwenu to RT and putting Smith at RG.

Perhaps you might know this better then me, but I understand that when they drafted Smith, he'd played LG in college. But becuase they already has Thuney at LG, they put him at RG. If true, he could totally play LG. I'm just reluctant to pay him and Onwenu that much money for two OG's. But, Onwenu could get traded after next season. Regardless, we NEED Alaric Jackson at LT!!! They'll sort the rest out for Maye's 2nd season and then beyond that.

Adams seems like a player that can get discontent rather quickly as of lately. I don't think he'd want to spend his waning time here. Also, Peppers almost retired the guy on the spot lol. No way Adams wants to play for McDaniels again.
