Patriots Player Departure Pats release Takitaki

You're Cap number is incorrect. You're forgetting that the Pats have to have money in reserve for the LBTE incentives in contracts currently on the roster. This is nearly $8M according to Overthecap. Releasing Takitaki gets them 2.6M, but that sill puts them between 118-122M.
Ok. Doesn't really change my point though, to be at $118M-$112M vs. $130M. Just a little weird to be doing work on the margins like this that early with that much cap. But whatever, it's just Takitaki. I don't really care.

What does this actually mean though. Who are they showing it to? What message are they sending by cutting Takitaki?

Like I said, it's insignificant but it seems a bit odd. The only logic I can see in it is that they don't see a future for him in the new scheme (be it health or new philosophy) and out of respect for him they want to be able to look for a job in the first wave of free agency. But... does he really deserve that.

IDK, I just don't see the logic in not bringing him to camp.
We have one of the worst rosters in the league.

Takitaki should have company in the Pats’ unemployment line soon.

Pats used to have some of the best names in the league for a long time. The franchise started slipping in recent years. Getting rid of this guy is a start, but still have more to go.

This was the guy we got instead of paying Mack Wilson an extra million bucks, by the way.
Wilson was barely considered an ILB by the end of his time in NE. Seemed more like they picked Uche (on what seemed like a very team friendly contract at the time) in the situational edge rusher role rather than Wilson. Even in Arizona this past season, he was on the edge about half the time.

Whatever. I forgot this guy was even on the team.

They probably cut him so he had time to catch on with another team.

Gonna be 30 by the start of TC.

Reserve LBs that can play STs are a dime a dozen. Draft/sign someone younger.

Interesting to see the cuts starting. Interested to see if Tavai is one such cut - many have inquired if he knows his place.
I wouldn't loose any sleep over him being cut.

Christian Elliss is already here.

If he's a reserve LB/Special Teamer - he's worth keeping. I don't need to see him starting at linebacker ever again.
Agreed. He was terrible. But he got a rep because no one expected him to do anything so if he ever made a play people thought he must be better than expected while ignoring all the plays he didn’t/couldn’t make
