Offseason player acquisition thread

I’m terrible with money, ask my wife, so I’m gonna ask a question about cap space.

How much cap space do you think it would take to sign these 5 guys:
Tee Higgins
Alaric Jackson
Morgan Moses
Levi Onwuzurike
Carlton Davis

100 million???
First year numbers would come in way less than 100 mil. Easily doable if they all want to come here.

I heard Phil Perry on the radio yesterday suggest the Pats use the 4th overall pick on Myles Garrett and a third on Cooper Kupp. WTF?!? Are the Pats a team a few players away from being a Super Bowl contender or a team in the first year of a major rebuild with very little talent on the roster?
Perry is out of his gourd. Kupp should be available for a 6th rounder (at most). Myles Garret shouldn't be more than a 2nd.

If the Browns trade Garrett prior to June 1st, Garrett's cap hit soars to $36M from 19.7M. Considering the Browns are ALREADY 30M over the cap, I don't see that happening.

People need to stop saying that there is "very little talent" on the Pats roster. They have a lot of talent. It's the DEPTH that's the issue.

Starting and Back-up QB
2 RBs
1TE
At least 2 Legit WRs in Bourne and Douglas.

Plenty of OC/OG depth.
3 starting D-line if you include Barmore. Decent Back-ups in Roy and Pharms.

Excellent Safety depth
2 of 3 Starting CBs.

Holes to fill:
#3 QB
#3,4,5 RB
#3,4,5,6,7 WR
#2,3,4 TE
Starting DE
Starting MLB, WLB, OLB
#2CB, 4,5,6,7

Now, the Pats have guys capable of filling the lesser roles like the lower end WR, TE, CB and even on the D-line.

People need to remember, that it's about building a team, not collecting talent.

That’s a ridiculous take. Perry has lost his F’ing mind. This team is 3 years from serious contention, and he wants them to make moves you make when you are knocking on the door. What a F’ing moron.

*Edit-It sounds like Curran has lost his F’ing mind as well. What is wrong with these guys?

Belichick got Randy Moss for a 4th round pick, for God's sake. You are correct about Cooper Kupp as a 6th or maybe 5th. Garrett after 6-1-2025 is interesting to me if the Browns pick up some of his deal and he agrees to extend. My guess is he goes to an NFC contender in a good weather location. The Rams make great sense or maybe AZ.

Another receiver to consider (not an #1 though) is Christian Kirk. He has a 24 million dollar cap hit in 2025 and most of it is salary. He currently has the highest cap hit on their team for 2025 and could save them $10 million or more towards the cap if cut or traded. He is in the last real year of his contract and they have already added two voidable years to his contract already. That means either they will extend his contract or let him go.

The Jags might be wanting to move on since he has injury prone the last two years (last year was a collar bone and 2023 it was a groin). If he is cut, he might be a good #2 WR. He might be able to be had in a trade for decent value too. The Jags are definitely not going to pay him #1 money with Brian Thomas their clear cut #1 WR.

Would rather trade for a 28 year old Kirk than a 32 year old Kupp.
You're proposal makes sense. And I know that although some players are not only injury-prone, but are the "Poster Players" for injury-prone (although any player not getting some injury at some point is rare, and they recover just fine). That being said, I'd be reluctant to sign someone that has a history of not staying healthy. I know Tee Higgins has had injury concerns, but none of his have been serious (and I think it might also have to do with him being ticked that he was 'Tagged"). If just for this season we provide Maye with a solid run blocking and pass protecting OL, then even decent #2 and #3 WR's (and a talented and deep RB Corps and running game), will help him greatly next season.

Even so, at some point, either by draft and/or trade, we NEED to obtain a legit #1-keeps DC's up at night WR(s). It just might not be this coming season.

WR should be LAST on the list.

With the Pats changing to a 4-3, Single Gap system that focuses on speed at the LB position, the Pats need to add to their corps as none of Jennings, Bentley, or Tavai are equipped for the positions.

They need a back-up to Godchaux with Ekuale being a FA.
I expect White to be one DE.
If Barmore is healthy, I'd expect Barmore to be the other.

If the Pats get Jeffrey Simmons, who is rumored to have asked for a trade, then that would be an amazing front 4. They'd need to just add another DT and DE. A guy like Sweat outside and then Bobby Walker inside along with draft picks.

They have some decent reserves in Roy and Pharms, but they are just that. Reserves.

I'd live to see the Pats steal Zach Baun to be the MLB going forward.

One of Mapu, Dugger, or Peppers is likely moving up to LB as well.

Vrabel has the money to swing for the fences with some of these guys.. Like Baun, Sweat, Justin Reid, etc.

I could easily see the Pats getting back into the play-offs if they can get some of these players to come here.
It's been said that Quay Walker and Rashan Gary can be had with mid to late round draft picks. Those two, in addition to what you propose, could make for an incredible defense. I would also try to draft Jack Sawyer out of Ohio State.

And got Sanu for a 2nd

Possibly, it depends on how they structure the contracts.
Almost any contract with a signing bonus is less in Year One, with how much depending on the number of years and the size of the bonus. There are other tools used less often.

The signing bonus is prorated over the length of the contract, but the GTD money at signing is the lump sum the player gets that allows them to give a lower base salary.

That was the greatest trade(s) in football history. Belichick got Moss for the Raiders 4th, got 2 HOF caliber years out of him. Then got a 3rd round pick from the Vikings for him, where Moss ended up saying he wished he was back in New England, and then basically did nothing for them going forward.

Sleeper addition from last night, DT Milton Williams from Philly.

We just have to upgrade WR from disastrous to competent. Would be nice to get a star or two, but we just need to make sure we have guys who belong in the NFL out there. We can get stars at other positions instead where they are available, and get a star WR at another time.
Get Meyers, that's enough for our wr room . It will be competitive and let's hope for a year 3 jump for Boutte and pop.

Josh Sweat's going to get Myles Garrett money now. Dude should have been Super Bowl MVP.
How much do we discount that he was playing against a Guard?
