OT - Not Hyperbole- Spags is among the best DC ever

And in SB 52 Bills defense got absolutely lit up by a backup QB...if you're giving Belichick sb53, he gets demerits for that piece of garbage that was the Pats D vs Philadelphia
With all his best defenders injured…

Hightower, Alan Branch, Jon Jones, Chung… take away any coaches best players and he’ll lose.

Said it a bunch here, Spags is a better DC than Belichick. And he is the greatest DC ever. Spags is doing this in a league where you can't play defense and the rules heavily favor the offense. Belichick, Ryan, et al, were DCs when defensive backs could hold, clutch, grab all over the field and pass rushers could take off a QBs head. Spags greatness is all in an era of offense first. He's the best, bar none.
You couldn’t be more wrong.

Spags got lit up by the Bucs in 2020 and Philly in 22.

Even with the injuries, Bill should’ve found a way to stop Foles and their gimmick offense.

I can't agree with this. Belichick continually developed defenses in the last decade that kept KC in check, even all the way up until the final meeting in 2023 when they again kept it close but obviously couldn't beat them with Bailey Zappe. And they did the same in 2020 in the game where Cam had COVID and Hoyer lost track of how many timeouts they had. They had them under control but just couldn't really put up any points in either meeting.

He's the only guy that kept keeping that group in check, and he obviously also did it in games that mattered. The fact no one in the AFC - or at least any teams that play in January - can do that is the reason why they're about to potentially win another title. If Bill had been coaching Buffalo yesterday, Josh Allen would be playing in two weeks. Incredibly frustrating.

He’s in the discussion easily. Chiefs winning this year and last year is mostly off their defense after the offense finally took a step back.

"Among the best DC ever"... I thought I read it as "the best DC ever" maybe the title changed?

He's up there but maybe overrated a little. As Giants DC he coached one of the worst defenses in the NFL in 2015. As Saints DC in 2012 he also oversaw what might have been the worst defense in the league, although to be fair that was the year Payton was suspended. He beat Brady in SB42 of course but then saw his defense get shredded by Brady several times in big games after that. His Chiefs* defenses weren't that good tbh until the last couple of seasons.

As a DC I'd take BB and Buddy Ryan for sure as they were innovators. Lebeau and Wade Phillips too.

Depends of you count the stuff bb did as a hc, as he WAS running the defense for the most part. But Belichick has at least at least 4 hof gameplans:

Sb25 against the bills
Sb36 against the rams
2004 afcd against the colts
Sb53 against the rams

Spags has sb42 and? Some nice gameplans and very clutch blitzes.

I Still go bb.
He actually admitted he didn't come up with the gameplan for that SB.

He said Romeo Crennel's Browns showed him the blueprint in the regular season game against the Pats, and Spags Giants ran the same gameplan on defense but executed it better. Crennel solved the 2007 Pats. Go figure.

He might be the best one in the NFL currently, but Buddy Ryan and Bill Belichick stand apart.

Yup. They were innovators. Changed the sport on that side of the ball.

Spags def deserves some credit. Hes up there but not in the Mr. Rushmore of defensive minds..

BB
Lebeau
Buddy Ryan
Tom Landry (DC for Giants. Doomsday D was his)

Somewhere after that is Bud Carson (Steel Curtain), Joe Collier (Orange Crush), Monte Kiffin (Philly, TB)

I remember that about the browns in 07. Still give spags credit though for implementing it.

Every time Cook got 3/4 touches they went from their own 30 to the Chiefs 30 then he sat on the sidelines.

He averaged 6.5 yards a carry, would made a few huge plays then not get another touch it was insanity it's the AFCCG why are you treating it like a week 4 rotation?

Why are they so eager to limit his carries in the 2nd last or last game of the season him only getting 13 carries was gross incompetence.
I can’t understand why he spent so much time on the sidelines as much as he did.

Philly took note. Saquon could have a big game.

Bill Arnsparger is also it the HoF of DCs. Hes in the same category as Spags. Did a good job as DC wherever he went.

Who cares
Fiesty!!

He has 4 rings as a pure DC and one of them is holding the greatest offense ever led by the GOAT to it's season low in the biggest game of the year. Also did it across two different teams.

His resume holds up next to anybodys imo as a DC.

That reaching for the goal line touchdown play was insane. I bet Philly watched the Bills success running and plan to give Barkley 30+ touches.

Spags has also had seasons where his defenses set the NFL historic record for yards allowed, I believe most points allowed in Giants history, and has fielded a 32nd defense more than once.

Some people here just like tee'ing off on Bill because you can just say some silly got-ya **** and think they've cracked an atom with their sharp wit.

Also I will go as far to say: Eagles SB is Belichick's most historic blunder. It pissed off the team, it probably didn't help the Brady situation... Just terribly managed. And it was a moment where the did NOT put the team first.

The Saints defense was horrible when he was DC. Maybe the worst in the league.

He is good.
