Is it possible that the #1 pick wont be as valuable as we thought this year?

Thanks Mike. Appreciate your thoughts. I don't think the history of teams assessing talent is good. Most websites seem to have Hunter as an outlier so I could live with that but not my preference. Otherwise, I think it's a bit of a crapshoot. I hope the Pats spend all their money and strongly agree it's how efficiently they spend it that matters ("get significant talent for the money").
It's hard not to see T Hunter as the exception of this entire group with A Carter being a close second. Hunter could solve Two Problems for us.

They could get Ty Warren at 8, and he’s a top 5 player, and the best receiving option, in this draft. Then they could either use the 3nd to move back into the first round, or double up at DT and Edge. But that all depends upon how they deal with needs in free agency. I’m open to all sorts choices with the 4th pick.
Is he the next Gonk Ivan?? I am not a Big fan of Hunter Henry hated the resign last year: he can't cant block for .

"Mayo" is now a pejorative. It means "to backstab, specifically by a toxic individual (often stupid, fat, delusional, spiteful, lazy and childish)." Example use: Wow, the Patriots really got Mayo'd when their fat head coach played the final game to win.
To be exact “Mayo” can now be a verb.

“While being in a position where a loss would have ensured the Pats the #1 overall pick, the Pats Mayoed it by winning.

I really like the idea of getting another Gronkish player at TE.

Don’t sleep on Mason Graham. Might be the best player in this draft class. Harbaugh called him “a gift from the football gods”. I’d like to see the Pats take either Carter or Graham at 4 and find other ways to deal with their needs at OT & WR.

Carter/ Graham would give the Pats a defensive centerpiece that every opponent would have to gameplan against for the next decade. The only way to get guys like this are to pick at the top of the draft.

WAYYYYYY too early to make any definitive statements about what to do with the 4th pick in this year's draft. Mostly because we will have almost 3 months of FA to deal with before the draft even starts. It will be hard to figure out a draft strategy until we know what will happen during those 3 months.

History shows us that there are generally 5-10 players in EVERY draft that "special" athletes. This season is a weaker draft at the top and I'm thinking the number is a lot closer to 5 than 10. 3 months from now after the senior and shrine games, after the combines, and after every bit of film of those top players have been analyzed ad nauseum we HOPE we will be in a position to make a solid educated guess on whom to choose. And remember when you are drafting it is ALWAYS just a guess.

BUT since we are in guessing mode, here or some of my guesses. I spent a couple of weeks bemoaning the loss of the #1 pick since I thought there might be 2 chances to trade down and pick up significant draft or player assets and STILL end up with a top 5 pick. But that was weeks ago, I got over it and so should you.

At #4 we will likely be in position to get one of the 2 best non-QB options. In my mind that would include one of these 3 players. Graham, Hunter, and Carter, and I'd be very happy since we'd be immediately better with any of those 3 guys, though I'm a LITTLE concerned about Carter's size at the next level. And I'm also a LITTLE concerned about just how much 2-way action can you reasonably expect from Hunter and still keep him upright over the course of a LONG season.

I'm reading that beyond that group the talent drops down to the next group of players who are ALL very good, but not quite "special". In the end I think my binky right now would be Graham who plays a position on defense that would be immensely difference making at DT. NOTHING disrupts a passing game more than a strong interior rush. Graham has the rare combination of quickness and power to make everyone around him better. And I guess that that's as good as a definition of a "special" player, he not only plays HIS position at an elite level, but he also makes everyone around him better.

I say stay at #4 and get one of those 3 guys, but it's also reasonable to trade down into the top 15, and pick up a now more reasonably placed OT, but that would depend on what you got for that trade.

Imagine Trading # 4 while picking up a Second. Getting Jackson - Stanley or Robinson in FA: then either Campbell or Banks @ 10 OL all set.
I will not complain about us using the majority of our resources on building a tank of an OL. Building that can entirely shift your team overnight.

I'd agree with you more if we were in a position to worry about spending. Right now, we're more talent deficient than cash strapped, and as we saw last year, even having cash to burn doesn't necessarily mean we will spend it or get significant talent for the money. If there's a chance to get a significantly better player at 4 than 8-10, we need the talent more than we need the money. But if they're ranking the players 4-10 the same, then yes, trading back makes perfect sense to save money and pick up another draft pick.
add to your point. I also believe after seeing how FA last year wasn't all that desirable the team rolled over $$$ to this off season.. wich in retrospect was a smart move. I was thinking BPA at #4.. unless Vrabel sees a deal he likes and we traded back.

4.50

Not sure we want drake london as a top 10 pick

Prefer DL or OL

There’s no lineman worth getting that high. Carter if he’s there on defense. But Tet is probably going to be close to BPA on offense at 4

Yeah, and even if someone is a significant talent, injuries can destroy them before you get a return on the investment. I think that's why Bill was always in favor of trading back and getting more picks because it's like getting more lottery tickets.

I long to return to the days where we have to be careful with our spending because our team is in much better shape.
Mike.. this feels so similar to when BB came on as HC, I know that roster was stacked with talented especially on defense. Vrabel just feels like he belongs here. I have us being a playoff team next season. I expect Vrabel and his staff to get top tier talent back in Foxboro.

JAROD MAYO!!

A extra second and fourth or two thirds even could add some playmakers
Free Agency will be critical.
I think Tee Higgins should be full court pressed.
Send Vrabel, Maye McDaniels to him:
Tee Higgins is too often injured for my liking. I would rather get a true #1 but not sure how we pull that off

Right, but I'm okay getting him for the next three years while we build up the rest of the team and try to figure out how to get a true number 1.

Trade back to 10 if possible

Carter and Hunter seem pretty close to “can’t miss”. The QBs leave a lot to be desired and Tet looks like a freak.

If you don’t have Carter or Hunter available at 4 you should be able to trade, and certainly hope you can trade because whatever your needs are you’ll be reaching.

Pray some team gets desperate and does something stupid for aQB

Abdul Carter or a trade down is what I see.

He might be the first player taken. This is one of the poorest draft I've seen in quite a while.

Tet, I don't know. We've seen big tall receivers who physically dominate in college but fail in the NFL. He just doesn't have quick twitch movements to separate from NFL DBs. If he uses his physicality well he could be like Anquan or maybe even Larry Fitz, but I don't want another N'Keal when we're picking Top 5.
