I love this hire. And I really don't get all the hate that Josh gets on this board. He is known for scheming guys open and that's literally exactly what we need.
Right, because he did it so well in Denver, St. Louis and LV. He's got a horrible reputation around the NFL.

This board was loving the O'Brien hire, only to show how bad he really was as an OC. McDaniels does not have Bill as his protector, Tom Brady as his QB and others guys like Welker, Edelman, Moss, Gronk, and Hernandez. I expect the media and fans to turn on him next season.

Woohooo

Not looking outside the Patriots family again McDaniels is a myth with an overly complicated outdated system that has never developed an elite outside WR and that's sucked without Brady and don't give me Mac Jones, Mac Jones played about 5 good games.

Kraft hire.
"Woohoo"?

Sounds more like Boohoo. Pull yourself together. The time for whining is over. Compare this to where we have been the past couple of years.

I have a question. How many OCs in the NFL right now are better than Josh McDaniels?

What are the chances that someone who has never been an OC before will succeed?

Echoing some others, the owners probably save some cash here. I wonder if the savings offset what they have to pay Mayo.

I was looking for the new, shiny toy, but I’m ok with JM. I thought he did a really good job here.

Did not want him as he is overrated because of Brady and it is just recycling of old ideas. When are we going to develop or tap into new offensive talent?
He's got a pretty good track record outside of Brady. I think you could do a lot worse in terms of OCs.
My main concern is like yours, I would have liked to have seen someone from outside the old ways. But crapping on McDaniels purely as an OC is kind of ridiculous.

Matt Patricia comes to mind.

Whoever the OC was going to be we need major upgrades at skill positions either way. No one's going to be Bill but Vrabel and Josh each bring a very good mind for each side of the ball and should compliment each other very well.

The experience these 2 bring compared to the experience of last year's staff should be enough to make anyone happy.

I agree, MacDaniels is a good OC, I just didn’t want EP back. Maybe he will make history and declare he’s a West Coast convert.

Don't hate the hire. Don't love it either. Here are my thoughts if anyone cares:

  1. - I think Josh will be a good mentor for Maye. He does work well with grooming QBs and making them play above their skill level.
  2. - He definitely helps Vrabel in that Vrabel can turn his back to the field when the Pats are on offense and let Josh call the game while he coaches up the defense if necessary. The fact he has an OC who he can trust to run the game while he is focusing other parts of the team.
  3. - Obviously, he won't be leaving any time soon unless he is asked to leave.
  4. - I am concerned this is a Kraft hire. I don't think Vrabel would take the job if he didn't have final say on his staff, but I wouldn't be surprised if the Krafts told him if they hire Josh that they will have more money for free agents because the Raiders are paying Josh's salary. Just speculations, may not be true.
  5. - Yes, Josh can tailor make his offense to fit almost any QB, but we have never seen him be really successful with it with anyone other than Brady type QBs. No one is Brady, but Cassel, Hoyer, and Mac were all lesser versions of Brady for the most part. Maye is not Brady.
  6. - My hope is McDaniels' time away from the game and watching other systems pay off and modernize his offense.
  7. - I admit I was wrong. I thought that he wasn't what Vrabel wanted as an OC in an Xs and Os standpoint. Maybe he put his ability to game manage on his own and being able to groom Maye over the scheme. Still think if Arthur Smith was available, he would be the Patriots OC right now.

Or at least has adapted some of it into his offense.
This is what I'm thinking as well.

I just hope we build out a good line of offensive assistants . The pipeline bled dry over the years .

What will TC McCartney do now. Will he be TE coach ? AVP QB coach ?

They were always integrating the new trends into it through the years. Think about the year we were running hurry up like Chip Kelly or the year with Cam we added a ton of run plays specifically for Cam.

We may see the old crew that bolted with Josh to Vegas.

It's the terminology I'm worried about. Every rookie from this year has no idea about the EP verbiage. And while that doesn't sound like a big deal, it's time that will be wasted, when they could be working on the playbook.

Couldn’t Josh change the terminology to more of an west coast verbiage if it was really needed?

Also let’s see what happens to AVP, Macadoo, and McCartney.
I’m sure that Vrabel got good reports from Stefanski.
But then again he did can Peter’s.
