So with the Detroit staff now free...

Do we look in there for an OC?

Then again we may only be looking at the 3rd best option in the building (if that). The best understudy will either go with Johnson or become the next Lions OC. Second best takes whatever the other one didn't.

So yeah, not sure it's worth to dumpster dive looking for the leftover guys.
Word is that when Johnson leave he will take Mark Brunell with him as his OC. Brunell is currently their QB Coach.

That leaves Tanner Engstrand (passing game coordinator), Scottie Montgomery (assistant head coach & running backs), or Steve Heiden (tight ends) as the likely leftovers, and 1 of those probably becomes Detroit’s new OC. Although I have heard Hank Fraley’s name come up as an OC candidate too - who is their OL Coach. A bit different.

Yeah, Breer is just making a hot take for attention.

Besides, if the Patriots are flaunting the rules because they interviewed two minority candidates who were never realistically in consideration for the position, that is an indictment on the rule and not the Patriots.

I am for more minority coaches getting top jobs. But if you make a rule that invites teams that are targeting a specific coach who isn't a minority to do what the Patriots did, you might want to revise the rule.

It doesn’t matter what they do, the talking heads will always find a way to talk ****.

Terrell Williams sounds like the favourite for DC
I know nothing about this guy but the fact that he's been a positional coach and never a DC his entire career and he is 50yo doesn't give me the warm and fuzzies.

With that said RAC was a D line coach for most of his career before coming here but coached STs and was a 1st time DC at CLE for a year in 2000 and he was 52.

Sometimes you don't know until you know.

Agreed. We just can’t find, and maybe WRs with that intelligence simply don’t exist because college offenses never use that skillset

No more adjusting routes mid play
Because of NIL too many transfers, so not many understanding of coverages and adjustments. It's just pure physicals and individual route running .

The article notes that Vrabel liked Williams enough to make him Assistant Head Coach. That along with the fact that he was with Vrabel his entire tenure at the Titans as well as the fact there haven't been any interviews for DC whilst the Lions have been in the playoffs all add up to it being the likely choice. Perhaps he's a placeholder for Shane Bowen for this year and gets the Assistant HC gig next year when they bring in Bowen...but that's just speculation on my part.

No question Vrabes respects him which to some degree gives me confidence hes a solid coach.

Keep in mind he may not come in as DC but at a D-line/AC.

Assistant HC isn't an actual job per se. It indicates who's in charge if the real HC is sick or suspended.

Dante held that title for many years.

That's certainly true but that begs the question as to why there doesn't seem to be any movement at DC. I'm sure we'll find out in the next few days.

Fair enough. I was just trying to come up with a scenario where Bowen ends up here. Maybe there's zero interest in Bowen but I was trying to sort out things logically in my mind.

Its like Dwight's position as assistant to them manager in "the Office"
