The Official Vrabel vs Ben Johnson Discussion Thread

Active coaches must be from non-playoff teams to interview in person and if you want to move fast most coaches that are legitimate candidates are in the playoffs so not so easy to just interview assistants from other teams. Is a random OC from a non-playoff team going to put himself out there for an interview that has to be in person so requires travel for a position he's not getting? Not sure the benefit for a guy that is 100% staying where he is at.

There is a reason the Bears chose the interim coach and the Jets a college coach from Maryland that can easily drive to the interview.
The Patriots didn't bury the Rooney rule interviews like other teams that did the same type of interviews, but for less benefit to the interviewee. Add that to the fact people think Aaron Glenn counts toward a Rooney rule when he doesn't unless he interviews in person.
This had led the uneducated to criticize the Pats for how they handled it when they actually have interviewed guys that are more in spirit with the rules than other teams. Pats interviewed guys that want their name out there to get back int he NFL, and the Past have helped them further their chances of landing a job.
Here's the problem: they should have asked to interview Glenn immediately, not as an afterthought to fend off criticism

Wolf implemented his scouting grading scheme this year which is the 1st time. The scouts didn’t use it last year because of time constraints. I think the Krafts want to give the grading a system a shot and see how it goes. The system doesn’t mean Wolf will be picking the groceries…it just means his system will be in use for the 1st time. I don’t think the Krafts want to have a different grading system 3 years in a row. So I think Wolf is important leading up to the draft due to his grading system but it doesn’t mean he will be evaluating and picking talent. Just my 2 cents.
Polk and Wallace over better players is always going to leave me underwhelmed. We were picking at the top of these rounds. Effectively, these were 1st and 2nd round picks during our golden era when we were always making our first pick in the 30s.

I didn't know what his 40 time was. On the field, I've seen guys catch up to him when he had 5 uyards ahead of him. But separation has always been a problem for him.
Once again, he had no problem separating in college. As mentioned, he needs coaching. Not saying he’s gonna be a stud, but he reminds me of Keenan Allen, plays a similar style.

Should’ve drafted McConkey, that was a huge mistake by Wolf. But we’ve spent the last decade bypassing better receivers.

Important Vrab stats
Here are some defensive stats for the Tennessee Titans under head coach Mike Vrabel:
  • 2018: The Titans defense ranked eighth overall in the NFL, allowing 333.4 yards per game. They also ranked second in the red zone, sixth in passing defense, and first in fourth-quarter defense.

  • 2022: The Titans allowed 359 points per game, which ranked 14th out of 32 teams.
In his only year as DC in Houston, they gave up the most points in the NFL.

His defenses were mostly mediocre in Tennessee.

Thats pretty harsh considering he had 5 of 6 years upper 1/2 of the league and 2 at #3 and #6

When he had talent like Landry, etc they did well.

Once the talent left, so did the quality of the D.

Need good personnel to have a good D.

I see your point as I've put thought into things as well. What the Patriots need is a culture building HC. Someone that's been there and done it on a high level. Someone who's been at other stops college, NFL ect. What Ben Johnson has as an offensive mind for the wealth of weapons in Detroit he won't have here in NE. Detroit is stacked at RB, WR and TE.. with Vrabel you bring in Josh McDaniels who's a great offensive coach in his own right. Ben Johnson in my opinion is going to go to a place where he's familiar, and that already has a roster that can compete now. That's his own division the Bears all they lack is a good coach.
I hope you’re right. I expect Vrabel on Monday. We’ll see who he brings. To create a new culture, he needs to bring in someone for Wolf to report to.

I though the 2021 team showed what he can do game planning with a solid defense. They were 5th in points allowed. 20.82 per game allowed.
However, they had 7 games against top 9 offenses in points score and they gave up and average of 18.42 to those teams.

Including:
Mahomes-3 points
Stafford-16
Burrow in the Playoffs-19

Been a long time since Patriot defenses have performed well against good QB's.

Even when they had a bad record the defense points per game were consistently solid, one outlier year of 2020. Ironically also the year the offense was way up for Titans.

I guess it’s all about who is the DC.

Assuming that is why they did it they should just never have asked to interview him. They caved to misguided criticism.

They had
Pees-2018-2019
Bowen-2021-2023
2020 was the non-DC year where Bowen and Haslett maybe were the combined DC but not named, I wonder if that uncertainty led to the bad defensive year?

I think Vrabel probably has heavy input into the defensive gameplan though.

This is the money thing, my friend messaged me about they were 5 mill apart a season,
They should meet halfway and get it done,
Expecting 12 to 12.5 a season.
The same person who told me about Jonathan and Vrabel meeting for dinner 2 weeks ago, he told me last night that Jonathan and Vrabel had a deal in place, Bob (being cheap as he is) wanted to give him a contract for the same amount discussed, but it was incentive based so that is what is holding everything up. Its ****ed up of Bob!

Because it's a rule that they've agreed to abide by they needed to go after guys who are actually ready to elevate (EVEN IF THEY HAD LOCKED ON OTHERS).

What rule is this? The Rooney rule does not apply to Glenn so what other rule.....?

Your absolutely correct. I believe wolf expects his role to change. I don't think he's going anywhere he'll be involved in another facet of the organization probably with scouting or something. The HC is the tone setter for a team. This team has so many young players that need a coach like Vrabel to allow them to develop notably polk and baker. If he brings Josh I hope he brings in Wes as WR coach.

What I see from them is they gave up a lot of yards but few points.

So when we say the 2018-19-20-21 Titans were not great on D, they were bottom half in yards, but again, as you said, top 10 in points allowed.

Sounds like someone's defense with which we are all pretty familiar.

I’m not the one mentioned the dinner with Jonathan and my friend didn’t say anything about that. He messaged me regarding the contract, which I get is business, but 5 mill a season isn’t a small number. As I mentioned earlier my guess is they meet halfway at 12.5 if it gets resolved.
