Interesting that coaches whose teams did not qualify for the playoffs are also off limits for early interviews.
Yeah, I don't get that one. They can "virtually" interview this week, but can't do an in-person interview for about 2 weeks after the end of their season. It definitely slows down the hiring cycle. But if you're the Pats and you hire Vrabel, who is exempt from that, he is already doing interviews for his coordinators and staff by that point while other teams are just starting to do their Head Coach in-person interviews. You get a leg up on poaching good staff.

And that is a good argument to hire Vrabel. Let's say the Krafts love Johnson. There is no real way of knowing he will come here. He has to come and see the facility and interview in person. Meanwhile Vrabel is held dangling for 2.5 weeks? That will tick him off and he will go elsewhere. Then what if Johnson picks another team? We are in serious trouble. I would turn to Brian Florez who can at least fix the defense and has experience.

It's so that staffers on playoff teams aren't punished for their success. Guys like Flo probably getting bypassed for less qualified coaches because waiting for someone to finish their playoff run carries its own risk.

I think they should be able to interview during playoff runs, shouldn’t cripple their chance of career advancement.

If you love Johnson….Pats could say. back out of all other interviews and we will hire you as soon as your season is done

We certainly could ask for something like that but I doubt we'd go that far based on a zoom. We'd still want a real interview.

I think unfortunately for BJ and those that want him he doesn't need to just impress he needs to do so well that it makes the Kraft's want to wait until Detroit's season is over despite the fact that Vrabel could move on and that Johnson could ultimately decide to go elsewhere or just not be as impressive in the 2nd interview.

Remember what McDaniels did to the colts?
Accepted the job then backed put.
That would be infuriating
It was ok that one time since it was the Colts but that really should not be allowed. Not sure what a good fix would be though.

Maybe allow teams to have something more binding in place? If a guy walks out without valid justification he can't coach for anyone else for a year?

Here's the thing, if the Krafts love Johnson based on the zoom, while the Lions are in the playoffs, they're talking to his agent constantly. They're also exchanging messages and working through all of the details to make sure they're comfortable. Maybe they're even paying a visit to his house to meet him in person.

Let's not pretend that the rules on these hirings (much like the rules on free agency) are strictly followed or enforced.

The pats have to play this carefully. If Vrabel and his agent get any clue that he is no longer the pats first choice he might go elsewhere.

My boy who works for a local sports show said he heard this.

I’m hearing through the cracks that Vrabel wants 15 for 4 years and the krafts were at 10 for 4 years

15 for 4 years is chump change. BB was making 25 per year
