Some of the talk about Mayo is actually making me defend him!
1. Defend a guy who was a traitorous turncoat to his mentor!
2. Defend a guy who touts his work for an outfit that loved to deny mental health coverage to people who needed it.
3. Defend a guy who blamed others for his own faults!
People should really take a step back and realize that of all Belichick's players over the last 20 years, Mayo was probably the best at Xs and Os other than Vrabel. Mayo worked harder with the playbook than anyone else, he ran the defense and knew every call (better than McCourty), he was always with the coaches in the film room, they called him Jerod Belichick! for heaven's sake. He was absolutely ticketed to be a head coach. And I expected to see him land a job eventually and be successful, it was clear he was on that trajectory. His elevation was not supposed to be a strategic hire. What ruined everything was...
1. Kraft assuming he had a lot more knowledge of football than he did...
2. Kraft's sense that a corporate football team is a good football team (which means corporate structure plus schmoozing, like taking a trip to the Middle East and impressing)...
3. Mayo's ambition
4. Mayo not really knowing what it took to be a top HC
5. Mayo's character, his attitude, his personality
Belichick played himself by pissing off the Krafts, the Krafts played themselves by assuming they knew all, Mayo played himself by having an overinflated opinion of himself.
Hubris all around.
Now we're hopefully going to hire a guy who pisses people off, thinks he knows all, and has an overinflated opinion of himself.
I hope he wins, a lot.
