Coach Jerod Mayo appreciation thread

I appreciate he seemingly never talked/spit into his mic.

He was not ready at all. He deserved to be fired. That said he is a total scapegoat. The organization itself is a mess including the GM and owners.

Nah he isn't a scapegoat. He wanted this, snakes his way around to get what he wanted. The organization was duped from the start and hopefully they have realized their mistake.

I would give a ton to have 5 minutes with Kraft and Kraft Jr. Not what some may think, just some coffee and a quick chat about what people really think about what is going on.

Bob would have taken any excuse to keep him if there had been but a glimmer of something worth keeping. So I appreciate his complete inability to show anything remotely worthwhile in any aspect at any point since taking over.

I've been trying hard to actually say something nice about him as a coach. I'll come up with his intent for the players to feel comfortable speaking their minds and not feel muted by their manager or their institution. As a leader you want to give your employees the opportunity to speak their minds. It's a free country after all.

However, even that got f-ed up. There is a right way (mentoring, couching, PR coaching) and a wrong way. He chose the wrong way.

And I've got nothing else....

I appreciate his DROY win, 1 All Pro team at his position and 2 pro bowls. What other coach can say that?

Thank you for not retaining Steve Belichick as your DC. I'm confident he would have saved your job. Now you have time to go to coach school on Bob's dime

I appreciate that he made sure to screw up so bad that he had to be fired after one year. A few good decisions might have won a couple more games and we would be stuck with him.

I appreciated him as a player.

As a coach I appreciated the perspective he gave me. I saw the quality of the team deteriorate at the end of Belichick’s time here and thought there was no way it could get worse. Mayo’s coaching this year really home how good it was under Belichick even in the leanest of his years in NE.

As though in a Dostoevsky novel, I appreciate that this Mayo experiment exposed Kraft for the douche he really is.
“Above all, don’t lie to yourself”…..

From his interviews I think his real love is crypto and business philosophy get rich stuff. Kraft offered him millions for the HC job and he took it. He saw HC as a paycheck and title and not a job.

Here’s how Drake Maye feels about Mayo’s departure:

That’s my quarterback!
Some journalists wrote that it was somehow a bad look for Maye to skip speaking to the media about Mayo being fired the day after… I think some interpreted that he was upset… But it could also be that he was glad and wasn’t sure he could give a press conference about it without showing it

You mean he couldn't wipe the smile off his face as hard as he tried.

The lesson in all this is people got to take a hard look at themselves and really ask, “am I ready to be successful in this job”. Just because a respected colleague/peer thinks you’re ready and wants to promote you or hire you…the only one who really knows is you.

Mayo, if he was being honest with himself, should have known that, and when BB was fired and Kraft approached him, he should of told Kraft to let’s give it more time and instead taken the Defensive Coord. role.

Because now by taking the job and failing, it has done damage to his reputation that will set him back years.

Patricia made the same exact mistake when BB asked him to be the offensive coord.

Some of the talk about Mayo is actually making me defend him!

1. Defend a guy who was a traitorous turncoat to his mentor!
2. Defend a guy who touts his work for an outfit that loved to deny mental health coverage to people who needed it.
3. Defend a guy who blamed others for his own faults!

People should really take a step back and realize that of all Belichick's players over the last 20 years, Mayo was probably the best at Xs and Os other than Vrabel. Mayo worked harder with the playbook than anyone else, he ran the defense and knew every call (better than McCourty), he was always with the coaches in the film room, they called him Jerod Belichick! for heaven's sake. He was absolutely ticketed to be a head coach. And I expected to see him land a job eventually and be successful, it was clear he was on that trajectory. His elevation was not supposed to be a strategic hire. What ruined everything was...

1. Kraft assuming he had a lot more knowledge of football than he did...
2. Kraft's sense that a corporate football team is a good football team (which means corporate structure plus schmoozing, like taking a trip to the Middle East and impressing)...
3. Mayo's ambition
4. Mayo not really knowing what it took to be a top HC
5. Mayo's character, his attitude, his personality

Belichick played himself by pissing off the Krafts, the Krafts played themselves by assuming they knew all, Mayo played himself by having an overinflated opinion of himself.

Hubris all around.

Now we're hopefully going to hire a guy who pisses people off, thinks he knows all, and has an overinflated opinion of himself.

I hope he wins, a lot.
