This has an opening post with good commentary and information, which we definitely recommend reading.

I don't buy the obsolete or outdated arguments at all.

Complicated maybe but aren't they all and isn't that the point.

Anyway back to the outdated part: it's not like we're sitting here 20 years later still using the Weiss offense it evolved with the trends through the years. It went from the more traditional I form stuff that Charlie ran, to a more spread when the right WRs were here, 2 TEs when the personnel called for that, we did a lot of he hurry up stuff when that was vogue, and we even put in some RPO stuff for Cam and Mac.

I always remember reading that one of the benefits of the system was that once you had it down it then made it easy to steal other trends and concepts.
And Ben Johnson runs a variation of the EP offense. Why can’t McDaniels evolve his version around Drake Maye? I bet he could.

I agree on McDaniels' style offense (I assume what you meant) becoming antiquated. That offense worked when you have a quarterback who is a very traditional drop back passer who relies on precision and timing. Brady, and to a much lesser extent Mac Jones, were guys who liked to sit in the pocket go through progressions and hit the open guy. While I think Maye will be able to do that (and to some extent already can) I think limiting him to that takes away so much of what Maye is capable of. Maye is an athlete and needs a guy like Johnson who can utilize his mobility and use the threat of Maye's mobility to keep a defense honest and open up some big plays. McDaniels' offense is like a Honda Accord. It gets the job done year in and year out but won't be able to keep up if you get into a race whereas Johnson's offense is a Ferrari. Flashy, fast, and exotic but costs a lot more to maintain.

This goes back to my whole ceiling comment. Sure the Ferrari could get wrecked and you're back to a Honda but I would love to see what the Ferrari can do with a capable driver.

That's what I've heard the fear is with JMD. If the offense is predicated on under center pocket passing and not today's RPO game its really not taking advantage of Maye's skill set. There is also the outside zone run scheme which I think we should continue to try to develop. Gibson is a great fit for it.

Josh did fine running an RPO offense w/ Cam Newton.

I assume we're getting Vrabel - it's as good a choice as we could hope for at this juncture.
IF he can steal Saleh as DC - that'd be a coup. I'd love Saleh to coord this D.
OC is the interesting thing. I know everyone wants some new young hot name.
But say for sake of rumor - JMD comes back. I'm not afraid of him "ruining" Maye. I actually think Maye has the intangibles that Josh would mesh with and excel in both of their values. (Would JMD be worse for Maye than sticking with AVP? Can't see that)

JMD was here just 3 seasons ago, with these current players: Andrews, Onwenu, Henry, Bourne, Stevenson.
I think JMD could actually get Polk to be used like Meyers, Gibson to be an even better White, Bell to model after AH.
And we always gave credit to Scar for those OL's, but JMD had the OL's playing pretty well without Scar with guys like:
Connolly, Wendell, Wynn, Karras, Mason, Cannon.
Saleh is going to be DC of niners (again)

I just read that Chad Graff is reporting the Pats will make a decision on new coach next week after they complete their interviews. That’s gotta mean the Johnson and Glenn interviews are a shame then, right? If true, no way Kraft hires one of those two after a measly 3 hr interview.

The biggest fear with McDaniels running the offense is that he’s just an arrogant prick. Him and Vrabel together are going to piss a lot of players off pointing to rings. I think it’s recipe for disaster for Kraft. There needs to be a real reset. Move on from the Dynasty.

Missing out on Vrabel is not the end of the world. Had the Pats had WR’s, they would’ve beaten down Vrabel’s team badly in 2019. His only signature win was against Baltimore making Lamar do something he didn’t want to do - strictly be a passer. Aside from that, Vrabel had one playoff win since then.

I guess Bob is looking to see if he get butterflies when he speaks with Any of the candidates.

If this is true, the Pats will be able to have whichever head coach they want.

Looking forward to hearing news on Vrabel today since he is interviewing today. I am guessing he will not actually be hired today but we will get some "leaks" of some kind.

How is that a problem?

He interviewed with the Rats too.

I want to be the last team he interviews with, recency bias and all that, plus the Pats will be the last ones to make an impression.

Reports have been consistent that the Pats are his first choice.
Ok good then…

Here is what does it for me in 2018 and 2020 Vrabel used a 12th man penalty to stop the clock, saving timeouts and in both cases they scored late for the win.

Vrabel used a BB trick to run time off the clock against us and they got the win and knocked us out of the playoffs. I think attention to details like this and situations is more important than taking a chance on the "next offensive genius". Adam Gase was once considered an offensive genius, josh McD among others that failed a HCs.
Well put.
