Does anyone think there is a chance Mayo is one and done?

Just playing devil’s advocate though, what if his picks AREN’T bad but the staff simply didn’t develop them?

What if Polk could be fairly solid but the toxic locker room culture totally screwed up his ability to perform?

What if Wallace had starting potential, but the awful strength and conditioning team (led by Jerod’s brother) screwed up his conditioning and then also screwed up his recovery, causing him to barely develop or play all year?

What if Okorafor could’ve been a decent RT but he peaced out because he could see how bad this locker room was going to be?

There’s a lot Wolf could point to. It does make me think it’s possible he returns for 1 more year with a good coach he signs off on and then they reevaluate. He didn’t choose Mayo, he was saddled with him. And then Mayo couldn’t even get his own staff together and they were stuck picking at scraps. No one wanted to work for him.
Ross, you might have a point - if he didn't double and triple dip at all these positions.

Wolf took a LOT of shots at the dartboard at the same position, and hit the wall with all of them. You draft one WR that doesn't work out - well, that happens. You draft 2, AND sign KJ Osborn as your 'big money' receiver, and they all crash out? That's not on the coaches. Even by accident, with bad coaching, a player with ability will show that on the field in flashes at times. Drake Maye, perfect example. Kayshon Boutte, probably a better one in this case. Austin Hooper. Those guys can at least be called NFL players.

But the rookies also didn’t really play.

Maye obviously did, but Polk started early on then disappeared. Wallace got a seemingly minor injury early on and was held out almost all year. Baker didn’t really play at all until the last couple weeks. Robinson DID play and has developed and started to look OK the last couple weeks.

It’s hard to say if they were good or bad picks if they didn’t see the field. You can argue they didn’t see the field because they didn’t beat the guys ahead of them, but do you trust that Mayo was really making the best decisions in regards to that?

I don’t think it was the best draft but I wouldn’t be surprised if a new staff came in and actually made guys like Polk and Wallace into solid players in short order.
Certainly all of those guys deserve a hard look from a competent staff. Even though I'm certain Polk is a bust and will wash out, at least bring him to camp. Maybe there is a niche for him -- I'm just some random fan spouting off.

Ok one thing I haven't really seen or heard talked about and haven't thought of myself thus far. If we as fans are this frustrated not with just the losing, but the dumb verbal diarrhea coming out of the mouth of every "leader" in the building. How can Robert and Jonathan not be infuriated? They have to be.
Jonathan I can't speak to. I've heard he does not have the bond that Bob has with Mayo. Jerod is Bob's only [edit] son, after all. And now as I'm sure you can understand, the feelings of a father for his only [edit] son can cloud his judgement. Fathers have ruined companies that have been built through generations of sweat and tears by passing it on to a son who was not worthy. As dementia has settled in, Bob's feelings for Jerod and his estimation of his abilities have rushed beyond the bounds of reality. Bob Kraft loves his son Jerod Mayo, and it's quite likely he will let him destroy the Patriots. The wildcard is Jonathan.

I wouldn't be too quick to excuse the coaching, especially with malleable young draftees. These guys might all be stiffs in the end but reports I've heard (via Bedard and others) are that WR coach Tyler Hughes leaves much to be desired.

That is a point that hasn't been made more of.

People just get old and loose their mental fastball. Their energy level decreases. Their attention span deteriorates. Look at Bill. Look at Biden. It happens to all of us.

Bob may be wise but hes not the owner he was. It seems his priorities are different now as opposed to putting a great product on the field.

He should have Jonathan play the role of Michael Corleone and settle family business on Black Monday.

The major consideration they have to give in hiring the next coach is who can put together the best coaching staff. For 15-20 years Belichick was able to put together one of the best coaching staff’s in football . It had weaknesses, like never developing wide receivers, but between Belichick, his coaching staff, and Brady , they were always able to get the most out of the team. Mayo simply was not able to put together a strong coaching staff, and it showed in the performance of the team, and the lack of development of any of the players, with the exception of Maye, who showed a really mature understanding of the offensive system, and the defenses he was playing against. Overall I think head coaches that are too inexperienced are the most susceptible to this problem, although I think coaches that have been around too long can suffer from it when the coaches they relied on long term retire.

As far as the Patriots next coaching hire goes I would lean towards Vrabel. I think he’s in the sweet spot in this regard. He has experience in both college and the NFL, and should be able to put together a really high quality staff. Who he would bring in as offensive coordinator has to be a major consideration, and they need to be a west coast offense coordinator so Maye gets system continuity.

The Patriots have to be decisive in this situation, and they should fire Mayo instantly so they can start the coaching search this evening. They should have multiple interviews set up for Monday and Tuesday, and if they want Vrabel he should be interviewed immediately, and hired as soon as humanly possible.

I would keep Wolf in charge of personnel, but they also need to bring in someone to bring their overall infrastructure into the 21st century, and the Kraft’s should invest heavily into this.

And I used to think that we had one of the best owners. Now ... maybe one of the worst.

I used to admire Kraft for all he did. Now his achievements have faded as this franchise has faded due to bickering, mismanagement and complacency.

With the team sucking the last three years, the BB hit piece, ticket prices, Mayo being a clown and now the Tavai fiasco, I think there is already a significant portion of the fan base which already feels alienated by the Krafts.

Count me as one of them.

Let's at least see how he handles things over the next week.

Yeah he made a mistake and promised the job to Mayo at a time when he thought things would end differently with Bill.

Kraft was owner for six Super Bowls. He let the organization pretty much run itself, and worked to keep things together longer while Bill and Brady fought.

The team is now in a great position to begin a rebuild with cap, draft position, and Maye. All we need now is the right management.

If the current management group is here a week from now, I'm on board, but let's see what actually happens.

In the end I couldn't care less about Kraft. What I do care about is his pledge to running a competitive, competent enterprise which appreciates and respects their customer's commitment .

Agreed.

And not cleaning house (at least coaching wise) confirms he has backed off this pledge.

But up to now I believe that pledge has been consistent.

He just made a mistake.

It'll be like an episode of The Sopranos. Overall it's a tragedy but there is plenty of drama and entertainment at other's misfortune (and "termination")
Reminds me of the episode they wacked ****y.

He has a beautiful chance with Vrabel or Johnson to rectify this franchise altering error.

This is fair and it’s similar to what I posted in another thread.

My biggest problem is that nothing in the organization appears to be buttoned up. Mayo just personifies that. I hope I’m wrong.

Obviously correct, but what specifically do you mean by "buttoned up?"

If we really want to make a comparison if Mayo is fired....

Kraft - Tony
Mayo- Christopher

The child has grown
The dream is gone

That broke me, Chris was my favorite character.
Especially since my name is Chris lol.

I think you made my point for me, in that there’s something clearly wrong in the WR room, and it’s not anything Wolf has to do with.

God I hated Chris. Love Imperioli though. He's brilliant.

Adrianna and the stripper Ralphie killed were unsettling.
