Does anyone think there is a chance Mayo is one and done?

The Patriots’ head coaching job isn’t officially open, but it’s definitely on the radar for people around the league. I’d go as far as to say it’s the job a lot of coaching candidates are eyeing. Why? Drake Maye.

If you’re trying to predict where the top coaching candidates will land, look no further than the teams with quarterbacks who have the potential to win big. Those organizations are always the most appealing. I asked three general managers where they thought Maye would land if he were in this upcoming draft; all three said No. 1 overall.

RK would be better off promoting Mayo into a fake position away from the field rather than demoting him into a hands-on position where he can further screw up the team. He was pretty good as a player following a scheme and executing a play call but there is no evidence - and I assert he has no capacity - to formulate schemes or make play calls.

RK would not only be better off firing Mayo, he should put him on a space rocket and fire him into the sun so he can never hurt the organization again. It's hard to think of another coach that has been so toxic to the organization and such a total failure in every way. Fake promoting him (tantamount to firing) is one of several "better offs." The problem I see is that I doubt Kraft will go that far. I'm positing a half-measure which his ego might find acceptable. "I made the right decision, but I just jumped the gun. He's not quite ready for the big job. Let's give him some seasoning as a coordinator."

AVP was the 10th or 12th guy the Pats interviewed for OC? The other guys all sucked and the Pats wanted to do trial interviews before interviewing the top candidate?

AVP was the OC in Buffalo and got fired after 1 year. AVP was in GB for 5 or 6 years and they never promoted him above QB coach. AVP was the OC in Cleveland but Stefanski didn't let him call plays, and then fired him.

AVP has never led a top offense, not once, after coaching 20 years in the NFL, and now people think he is a top candidate. After 20 years, AVP has zero OC success in the league, zero OC track record, and has been repeatedly fired for failure, but PatsFans thinks he is one of the top candidates for OC.

Amazing how we found AVP after 6 teams worked with him and could not see it. Amazing how AVP holds so much OC promise that is ready to blossom after failing in the league for over 20 years. I know, I know, it is not his fault, AVP never had good players to coach.

Teams also rated Bryce Young and Caleb Williams the #1 pick, there are 1/3 of teams that picked guys to coach that turned them into 5 win and less teams. Who cares what other teams do?

Who thinks AVP is a top candidate? There is 1 top candidate, Ben Johnson. He's (AVP) in the middle of OC's like most of the OC's in the league.

AVP has a ton of experience, AVP has years coaching a system. You think he spent 20 years coaching in the NFL and doesn't know anything?

I think you over-estimate the # of good offensive coordinators in the NFL, they all study, they all copy each other. Yet only, what, 8 of them would have good offenses without a great QB? And 7 of them are head coaches!

I'd love to hear your list of AVAILABLE coordinators that took mediocre talent and make them a top offense? What OC's do you watch and say, Wow, innovative stuff!

I feel fairly confident that if Mayo is moved on from, he will not be fired but will instead be “reassigned” into a cushy role away from football ops and more in a marketing type position. But still be permitted to observe how things work for his future education.

This is why I think Vrabel is the best option - Vrabel would be able to handle such an awkward circumstance, he would be able to tell the team to STFU about Mayo and tell Mayo to GTFO if he tries to stick his nose into things, and Kraft wouldn’t take offense like he would if it was a guy Kraft doesn’t already know and trust. Vrabel is also an ex-LB who played in this scheme like Mayo was so he can speak to that in the same way Mayo tried to do but with some actual level of success.

I would have fired him the moment he put Maye back in last week’s game. That was totally irresponsible, and completely self serving. Kraft should have gone to the locker room at halftime, pulled him out, and told him to go clean out his office and not come back.

You are arguing against your own point. Rating a candidate before working with them is not equivalent to rating a candidate after working with them for 20 years. After one year of working with Bryce Young and Caleb Williams do you think the teams changed thier opinions? The league has worked with AVP for 20 years and has not identified him as a top OC candidate.

Now you are exaggerating to make your point. I never said AVP did not know anything. I said AVP is a great QB coach, and was promoted above his pay grade. The Peter Principle. Coaching a QB and coaching a whole offense is completely different. My evaluation of AVP is not important - I have never worked with him. But I know the league has worked with AVP for 20 years and does not hold him in high regard - that opinion is what is important. The Pats asked around the league before interviewing the OC candidates to try to find the best candidate. There is a reason AVP was the 10th or 12th candidate interviewed.

I might overestimate the number of good OCs in the league. You might be right. But after working with AVP for 20 years, the league does not hold him in high regard. AVP has never been successful at OC over 20 years. A dearth of good OCs in the league does not make AVP competent.

I am not a NFL talent evaluator. I am a PatsFans poster.

I can tell you who is awful based on their work experience, but I do not have the training to predict who will be the next great OC. But there are always OCs in waiting, I am sure there are some now. The next OCs are not already OCs. The existing OCs will want a HC job, not a parallel move to the Pats to take the same OC job. The next great OCs are presently TE coaches, or QB coaches. An example is Nick Caley, but I am not qualified to tell you if Caley's abilities will translate from TE coach to OC. I know for sure that AVP's ability to coach QBs did not translate to being a successful OC because of his documented performance.

That is a point that hasn't been made more of.

People just get old and loose their mental fastball. Their energy level decreases. Their attention span deteriorates. Look at Bill. Look at Biden. It happens to all of us.

Bob may be wise but hes not the owner he was. It seems his priorities are different now as opposed to putting a great product on the field.

He should have Jonathan play the role of Michael Corleone and settle family business on Black Monday.
