Because it always happens.

The Patriots trade down . . . and let the Dolphins take RB Ashton Jeanty.

The "haul":
1.12 Kelvin Banks OT, Texas
2.38 James Pearce EDGE, Syracuse
3.70 Tyler Booker G, Alabama
3.84 Derrick Harmon DL, Oregon

I’d do that trade down. Miami could really suck if Tua gets hurt again. Higgins and Stanley in free agency. 2nd and Polk for DK Metcalf. LFG

If the pats were able to come away with that haul and get those players I make the deal no questions asked. I just don’t see that happening at all.

Not sure who picks 1&2. But, looks like Sanders and Ward. Probably NYG and Raiders. Travis Hunter goes 3rd. Then, things get interesting.

If we pick 4th, I’d probably go Banks at LT if we sign Higgins in free agency. I still can’t believe how bad Lowe and Jacob’s were this past Sunday. If no Higgins, draft Tet.

Appears to be a lot of depth on DL and Edge. A pass rusher at 36 would be nice.
Looking at CB and C in 3rd.

Hope we get Higgins and a T in free agency.

Agree with this take on trying to get Higgins and an OT in free agency, try to get as much flexibility as possible for the draft.

In that scenario would you still go with Banks at #4 with Hunter, Ward, and Sanders off the board or would you consider someone at another position? What inclines you towards Banks rather than Campbell?

In that scenario I’d be real interested to pair Higgins and McMillen sort of like the Bengals pairing Higgins and Chase.

I think Banks is a little lighter on feet. Can get to 2nd level on screens and more powerful. Though, not a great run blocker yet. Potential is there. Campbell Is probably a tad better right now. I’m projecting more upside in Banks.

I’d be fine with Tet. I want to be real aggressive to get back into first for a T if we go WR at 4. Preferably, Simmons or Ersery.

I’d say Banks is the best pass protector in this draft. Top10 pick. I’ve only seen one bad game from him vs Georgia.

But if they are going to trade back it’s Wyatt Milum West Virginia all day. Falling in love with the prospect of drafting him and picking up another high 2nd. He seems to be up there with some of the best pass protectors as well as being one of the best road graders. He might be A top 10 pick before the season and combine are over though.

If we pick 1st or 2nd, I’m definitely trading back to a qb needing team for a 1st next year and another pick this year. This seems to be a good meat and potatoes draft. Load up on linemen. Especially, if we have some good free agents.

That second paragraph sounds like a real ringing endorsement of a guy the Pats should pass up all the WRs and OTs for. . . . This is clearly a no-trades-allowed mock, because somehow it has McMillan dropping into the 20s.

4) New England Patriots

James Pearce Jr., EDGE, Tennessee

James Pearce Jr. fits into the same mold of stand-up pass rusher that New England has deployed for what seems like decades now. His game requires very little imagination because quarterback hunters like Brian Burns have paved the way for the lean, explosive, Gumby-esque pass rusher.

When Pearce times up the snap the way he did against Alabama, offensive tackles cannot physically make it to their set point, and Pearce’s hands and bend put him on nearly a straight line to the QB. He’s not a well-rounded run defender and he may never be, but his athleticism will make him a disruptive player on that end, if not inconsistent.

This would probably be a pitchforks-and-torches type draft. No trades.

4) Abdul Carter, EDGE, Penn State [McMillan and all the OLs are still available]
36) Deone Walker, DT, Kentucky [Milum goes one pick before]
68) Davison Igbinosun, CB, Ohio State
83) Tory Horton, WR, Colorado State
105) Jalen Catalon, S, UNLV
142) Gabe Jacas, EDGE, Illinois
219) Jack Velling, TE, Michigan State
220) Thor Griffith, DT, Louisville
239) Jeremiah Cooper, S, Iowa State

Now we're talking. Tet + Ersey would be a coup.

How do you guys feel about Tet having a 4.5 (40 yd) time
Is this going to be another receiver that cannot separate
I know he has the height for jump balls and he has good body angles to catch contested passes
I want a receiver who can separate and get deep

Move the chains guy, not a game breaker, not worth the pick it is going to take to get him.

I kinda feel that same way also
I know we need WR’s. He seems like a #2 guy
We need to get a #1 guy in FA. Higgins will need to be overpaid. Maybe Godwin
I like Hunter more as a WR choice if available. He can separate and has the speed for the deep ball
But Hunter does not have the preferred height.

Traded #3 pick for #10, 44, & 87.

With these picks chose LT, RT, C. Would love this type of trade to fix O-line

Well, it fixes one of the two big problems. . . .

I actually love the first two choices, haha.

In a vacuum, they're fine, but it's the same sort of ignoring obvious problems that led to BB's firing.

Serious question: if the available OTs and WRs when we pick aren't slam dunks, do you take them anyway or pivot to impact defensive players? I'm not trying to be the devil's advocate or play a gotcha game or something. I honestly don't know which way is better. I'm not super impressed with the LT and WR options at the top this year, but we desperately need help there. I'm not sure I see a good path forward. But it's very early in the draft season still.
