Hit On Trevor Lawrence

I caught Steven A Smith ranting about the hit on Trevor Lawrence. I don't understand how people are calling this the "dirtiest hit ever". Lawrence didn't start his slide until milliseconds before Al-Shaair committed to stopping him. What was Al-Shaair supposed to do? Just let Lawrence run by? By the rules, it was a penalty. But dirty? Nope.

The NFL needs to fix the rules for a running QB. Get rid of the slide. Once a QB starts running, he needs to be treated like any other runner. How many times has Josh Allen faked a slide to get a bunch of yards? QBs know they can get away with it so they wait until the very last second to slide. Defensive players cannot stop tackling just because it's a QB. They are taught to stop the runner and if they don't, they get fired.

dirty implies intention.

if you read the apology issued by Al-Shaair, it comes off as genuine. I do not believe it was intentional; It may have been late, but was not dirty.

Other players and people associated with the NFL have labeled it a cheap shot or dirty. It was way late, and apologizing a day after doesn’t really do anything.

If the comment was typical boilerplate, I might agree; it wasn't.

Lawrence started his slide when Al-Shaair only 2 yards away and already into his tackling motion (lowering his shoulder to avoid a helmet-to-helmet hit). When you watch it full speed, you can see that there was no way that Al-Shaair would have been able to avoid that hit because Lawrence started his slide too close to the defender.


I don't see dirty here. Late hit - yup. Penalty - yup. But Al-Shaair only got Lawrence in the head/helmet because he had already committed to going low to avoid making a dirty play. If Lawrence isn't sliding there, there's no helmet-to-helmet.

But no matter if this particular hit meets your criteria for being dirty, the QB slide is a bogus NFL play. Once that QB runs, he should be treated like any other runner with the ball. Running QBs are taking advantage of this in many games, gaining extra yards because defenders know that they can't touch them or flags fly. How many QBs have managed to get the 1st down simply because no one is willing to hit them as they near the sideline? I'd bet the number is high. Even if they keep the QB slide, they need to modify the rules to stop the fake slide. Josh Allen's fake slide against the Steelers last year was the best example of how it can ruin the game (but it was the Steelers so, woo-hoo ).

Sorry, but he went right through him. There was no attempt to change his path, he was all in on going through him. That's how he plays the game. Seen plenty of guys try to avoid the late slide hit and get the personal foul without creating such consequences.

The League will come down hard and he'll have a target on his back from the refs for years a la Rodney H.

i disagree that it was dirty. No question that it was a late hit, but that doesn't make it dirty; but as I said, not a hill I am going to die on

I will say after watching all those London games that Lawrence is an indecisive, awkward running QB. Sooner or later either he or an opponent was going to knock him out of a game.

All the measurables in the world don't always make a great QB. Jeff George comes to mind. All the tools, but none of it added up. IMO he's just another in a long line of guys who come out of college with the hype train and then are just meh. He might have done better with a guy like JMcD or Andy Reid. Who knows?
