Defense is the biggest disappointment in 2024...

This season even with all the changes on the coaching staff, rookie QB most of us thought the defense would be sound.

Trading judon, Barmore's health ,peppers legal situation, and Dugger underperforming all have effects. However even with 3rd string guys this defense should still be at least middling. What is Covington asking these guys to do? The Rams game made me realize that coaching, and match ups have been a problem all season. Can it get better? sure but not this season! However this defense has been the biggest disappointment to me this season. Save for gonzo and Barmore feels like the defense needs injection of talent on all levels.

Other than Gonzo, they have definitely been disappointing. I think losing Bentley to injury and Peppers to being an idiot, really devastated the leadership of this defense. I thought White was headed to being a good replacement for Judon’s productivity but there are some games where he completely disappears. Don’t get me started on Dugger. I think Mapu has been better this year. ??

Huh? I don't think even our dynasty-era teams were three deep on starting-level talent. I get it, we wish everyone was starting-level talent but in reality one hopes that second level are spot starters, third level are developmental players.

IMO, If your third string defenders are good enough to make a middling team, chances are you haven't built your team very well. If you are three deep in starters on D you better also be three deep in starters on O, or you should start making some trades.

Oh please do sir! I was one myself to be duped into thinking they could still be top 10ish.. there is no excuse for them not being to stop anything! I mean anything.. wise a 30 year old DL has the tram lead with sacks. White is another player put in bad positions he's an interior DL and he asked to rush on the edge. Not his skill set. Jennings has been the best guy up front all season and he's not a pass rusher. Dugger has been MIA all year.. I agree Mapu has been solid. Marcus and Jon Jones are solid players but not game changers at CB. I mentioned yesterday in a post reply.. without Bentley and peppers on field presence who is the guy to tell mayo and Covington it's not working?? Ty law said it used to be him and or Bruschi to tell Bill or crennel the game plan isn't working.

Right. Point I'm making is all these guys have been in the defense since training camp it shouldn't be this BAD!!!! BBs defenses even with 2nd and 3rd stringers some years always got better these guys got worse.

Defense has the least amount of tunover and have veterans there. Rookies I'm always willing to give them time. The defense is missing leadership and sound coaching.

Yes it's real ****ty when you think about it... if we had stayed Pat no pun: we would have come away with Maye and Ladd McConkey. Trading can seem tempting then it blows up in your face. We were picking close to the Top of each round and came away with absolute Stiffs after Maye that's bad. IF Wolf messes up again in 2025 he needs to be in the Unemployment line abysmal.

We have to be Major players in FA and split the Draft Capital on Offense and Defense. Now that think about it WR/CB Travis Hunter would solve two of our problems...he would be tempting.

I think the Krafts made a mistake here you can't go from the GOAT of HC's to Mayo, something is wrong with that. It's reported SB was the DC and Mayo ran the meeting they supposedly were Co DCs.. something beyond the talent level is amiss.. how can a defense not stop anything.. I mean it's inconceivable that a NFL professional team can't stop anything an offense does. Mayo is only here because the language In his contract. I try to be patient with Mayo because I like him.. but I can't defend him anymore with the defense looking like this.. Drake already has WRS who hold him back now his defense is too!

Defense came in with some obvious deficiencies at edge, outside cb, and dl depth. Some other lesser obvious needs. This was compounded by major injuries/situations to 3 very key defenders. We need health and to address the former 3 areas at least this offseason. hoping we either get peppers back for 25 or get enough relief on his salary to fill that void too. Coaching needs to improve too, they certainly look like a rookie staff

I get what your trying to say. However I'm not focusing on the draft beyond maye because they are rookie WRs.. had Brissett for QB for first 5 games. AVP still can't unlock the offense Drake plays well in spite of everything around him ****ty. The kid deserves a veteran defense to help him out. I mentioned the losses of judon, Barmore ect. However COACHING should be allowing guys to play gaps better to stop the run, putting your best CB on teams best WRs shouldn't be strategic is obvious things they aren't doing on defense.

That is why I hope we lose out I don't think the Krafts stick with Mayo if we don't win a couple of more games. That's the gauge Five or Six games if we lose out we should be First in line for Ben Johnson - Kliff K or Bobby Slowik. That said I don't see too many wins on the remaining schedule unless our WR's play light out: not holding my breath.

Mayo of course hasn't proven he is or isn't the guy but I think we'll know soon. I'm cheering for him.
