I put together this sheet for that season. Man some of the QB's that had big passing numbers against this defense. Romo, Rivers and Ben with AB in his prime I can sort of understand and Fitz to a lesser degree but Orlovsky, Vince Young, Jason Campbell, Chad Henne, Matt Moore... just lol. Gave up 400+ yards of offense in 9 out of 16 games and 350+ in 14 out of 16. Yikes.
Although we see here that defense at least was very good at getting turnovers and that helped. Unfortunately this year's defense isn't.

2020-2024 have been really difficult to even watch the Pats, but Maye is helping them stay on life support.

Of the Tom/Bill years, I didn't like the 2000, 2006, 2009, 2013 and 2019 teams. 2018 was pretty boring until the playoffs rolled around where they turned it up.
2006- we had doug Gabriel at WR.. didn't he get cut when we signed gaffney? Who was the LB we had playing safety Don something?? Ending I'm the loss at indy

I think they got to the SB. Where they let Eli and company hold the ball for 40 minutes...

I was looking at the stats when I was typing that out and it was atrocious lol. But to be fair, they did lose in the post season, so while I don't think it needs to be elite, it does need to show up! That was the year before Talib, where they started to fine tune the secondary, which took a few years.

And Bernard Pollard needs to eat ****.

Side note, he, very surprisingly, said this following that season:

"In an interview with CBSSports.com's Clark Judge, Pollard claimed that unless significant changes are made, the NFL will cease to exist in 30 years. He said that while the league was making great strides toward making the game safer, players were becoming so big and so strong that concussions and other serious injuries would still continue to escalate. Eventually, Pollard said, "there's going to come a point where fans are going to get fed up with it" and stop watching."

Ironic that he gave such an answer, given his history of derailing 4 Patriots seasons.

There isn't a single player I hate more.

Yup that 2009 team. Too much *****ing in the locker room that year. For some reason there wasn't the buy in needed. That was the year the Bill said he couldn't get them to play the way they needed too to Brady after the 4th and 2 thing.
I agree. 2009 was my least favorite team of all time. Underachievers like you read about.

2007, like Kraft I only like happy endings.

One thing that's lost though is that the team was undergoing a rebuild.

Ty Law, Tedy Bruschi, Seymour, Kevin Faulk, Moss, Matt Light, Rodney Harrison, Stephen Neal, Ty Warren, Vrabel, even Asante, Troy Brown, Ben Watson, Eugene Wilson.

How can you lose so many players and still keep it going.

This was the second rebuild that Belichick conducted with the Patriots.

Since pre Brady is almost a quarter century ago (not to mention I can't remember it very well) and picking on 2020-23 is too easy, I'll stick with the Brady era. Top five:

5. 2005. Meh, it was a really forgettable season that I don't remember much about in hindsight. I was pretty happy winning 3 out of the last 4 before that, so I feel like I was pretty prepared for us to have a drop off at some point.
4. 2002. I feel like the expectations were so much lower back at that time, the the 9-7 season didn't feel the way it would have felt had it happened years later. Team just had consistency issues. Another year that's hard to remember too many moments from.
3. 2008. For obvious reasons, never had a more devastating start to the season. The Brady injury flipped expectations immediately. This honestly wasn't even that bad of a year down the stretch. It was fun to watch the team win the last 4 games to finish the season. Always wished we got to see what the team would have done in the postseason.
2. 2019. Probably the worst finish to a season. The first half of the season "boogeyman" defense was one redeeming part of this season. But the offense was pretty damn painful to watch implode.

1. 2009. For me it's this year and it's not even close. I did not like anything about this team. All of the leaders on defense were gone and replaced with mediocrity with no personality. Adalius Thomas. Felt like they were lethargic. The offense was very unbalanced, pretty much would vanish once Moss/Welker could get taken away. Running game was mediocre with Maroney. You had 4th and 2, the Saints MNF debacle, and finally the playoff game that was a total nightmare, and pretty much exposed what we all knew about the team. The 59-0 game that was a fluky act of mother nature, and the comeback against Buffalo week 1 were really the lone bright spots of the season. This year definitely felt like it was the end of an era at the time.

Ty Law left after 2004. Asante took over for him from 2005-2007.

Moss, Light, Faulk, Warren and Neal were on the 2009 team.

Brown was cooked by 2006 and Bill found his replacement very quickly in Welker in 2007.

I think the team still had Faulk, Moss, Light, Neal, Watson and Warren, so it was more on the defensive side of the ball at that point. I think the way the team responded to rebuilding in 2010 was far more resilient, felt like it was actually less talented than the 2009 roster.

2002? Defending Super Bowl champs? Bro. Are you even a fan?
I certainly didn't dislike the team. The roller coaster ride was pretty fun to watch and Brady was a leading passer in the NFL. However, the defense took a nose dive and the infamous Steve Martin who was seen jogging around the field I think against the Jets was very unlikeable.

Devin McCourty was a big reason for the passing defense giving up what they did. There were articles that I had posted some time ago showing he was giving up yards at a historic rate at the time. He was really getting blown up that season which is why Bill had no choice and try him at FS when Chung got injured before declaring him a bust. Like Malcolm Jenkins, they found their calling at S.

I think you're referring to the 2010 team that lost to the Jets in the Divisional Round.

Very simple TOM BRADY

Ugh.. who can forget that game.. a 14-2 season and when crumpler dropped that TD I knew the game was cursed.

I don't hate all rebuilds. It was more their attitude and mental weakness (no wins on the road) that bothered me. The "Jetsons" comment pushed them over the edge to despicable to me.

I actually met Adalius that night. He was miserable.

I had a bad feeling about the INT after the Pats were moving the ball pretty easily on the Jets on the first drive. It was still was extremely early, so there's still no excuse for the Jets winning that game.

Before that you had people asking about that weird shot of Brady sniffing the smelling salts on the sideline before the game. And the Welker benching on the first drive over the Rex Ryan feet comment.

Yes!! I remember that!!! We had been a top 5 offense all year and that game the aura just felt weird for some reason. The bad defense showed up when Braydon Edward's powered 3 guys into the end zone.

1990 is far and away the correct answer. The HC was clueless, the GM was a bad joke, the owner was a scumbag, the QB's were the ghost of Steve Grogan, Hodson,Marc Wilson and 70% of the players DGAF. It was straight up embarrassing to be a Pats fan. No Pats team before or since has come close to being half as contemptible.

Who else was pissed off when they lost at Denver in 2009 and McDaniels was acting like he was getting ready for a Gatorade bath fist pumping his way out of the stadium?

That Denver team was fecking terrible!
