Belichick remarks on Mayo's "soft" comments on Pat McAfee Show - "They're not soft"

Not sure if this was posted but McCourty chimed in -

“Why is this team not tough? When you hear a team isn’t tough and they are soft, you think, ‘What is the head coach doing?’ How is he getting them ready to go? Mayo and that staff have a lot of questions to answer going into next week.”

Yikes...
Ouch... when the nicest guy in media and a former teammate skewers you there's a problem.

Wow - all the posters complaining about Mayo blaming Bill should now shut up.

If I am Mayo, this makes it open season on criticizing Bill's mess last couple years. Bill really was out of line here.

I dunno. Mayo arguably owes his entire career to BB -- as player and assistant coach -- then proceeded to (reportedly) undermine him last season. That was pretty dirty. Now that he's in the media, Bill supposedly has the right to comment on Patriots matters. Along the way his temptation to tweak Mayo might be understandable. But it probably would be prudent for them to avoid sniping at each other publicly.

It is a political thing. Most are on the left, even far left, and hate Bill because he wrote Trump a letter that Trump read at a campaign rally.
Clown post. No one cares about Bill’s political views or yours. Go spew about it on a political forum.

there is being in a rebuild and then there is whatever the **** is happening to the patriots.

Bob Krafts decisions this off season feel a lot like he's speed running ruining the franchise and his reputation.

Cheaped out of a coach because of the "vibes" during a leisure trip.
Somehow managed to not sign ANY new notable free agents after the team finished 3rd last in the league the year before.

the team is basically in open revolt, everyones pissed, and the only people trying don't matter.

Coaches don't want to come here
players don't want to come here.

****s an ABSOLUTE DISASTER

and then you add on kraft lobbying to get HIMSELF into the HOF, whilst ****ing some 22 year old chick? then the hit job on the apple tv show, and constantly running his mouth in the media.

It's no wonder it was his WIFE's money that got him the franchise, everything else was luck

Seems Mayo did do all he could to grease the skids for Bill’s firing, knowing his contract said he’d be the successor.
Listen to the GM Shuffle podcast that dropped today, ML says Mayo was late to team meetings last season because he was upstairs meeting with the Krafts and everyone on the team knew it.

I don't think Bill even harbors much ill will towards Mayo, he just knows what a terrible job he is doing and what a messed up organization this has become. Devin McCourty is slamming Mayo... this isn't even a controversial take. Mayo is slamming BB's former players and calling them wussies... the dude does not abide.

I'd like to see someone to call Keion White soft to his face.

I know it is more of Bill twisting the knife but Mayo kind of walked right into it with this one. I don’t think they're soft. I just think they're not very good.
I think the only variable this year vs last is Coaching. Basically same personnel as last year …..last year one of top defenses….this year one of the WORST. I think it is becoming very likely that Stevie B was calling the D primarily with Bill….and Mayo may have been just coaching LB or something. Mayo just doesn’t seem ready and AVP and other coaches have been awful…..and they’ve lost control of their team and Mayo is allowing players to say whatever they want to media and post whatever they feel like on social media without repercussions……totally different culture, bad practice, and it will be a disaster!!!!!

You tell them coach. They have no fecking idea what they are doing out there. I know BB is a Navy guy but he was well schooled in ADRP 6-22. You just don't get up and lead men in football, it is a game mostly akin to war. Just playing it is not enough. There are principles and doctrines you must first be equiped with to start, must have a plan, if not, experience will be your best teacher and it will come too late.

I also feel for the players. BB was building something. Fecking Kraft with his silly obsession with Brady has led to this disaster. This organization is following Manchester United's footprint to the shadows. Like what was the Krafts thinking installing Mayo as the head coach?

Next excuse for Mayo will be "well, I don't have BB to call the defense......"

I don't blame him for twisting the knife, Bill is one of the great grudge holders of all time and someone basically got hired to replace him 5 months after he'd won a Super Bowl which has been documented by Kraft he decided he was hiring Mayo in June 2019.

Mayo was swanning around the building last year for most of the season knowing he was going to be the guy in 2024, there was reports about him rubbing members of staff the wrong way last year.
Bobby K must have approved of that…..sorry couldn’t help myself!!!.

You should check out Twitter some time, because mention of Belichick gets a lot of hate from Trump fans because he refused to accept a Presidential Medal of Honor from him.

It's a cope because people need ulterior motives for someone disagreeing with them and often the people who claim to hate politics the most interject it into everything.

Bill's mediocre drafting the last 10 years has been an open NFL secret that was acknowleded even beyond Patriots fans for years. The WR issue has been a thing since we got rid of Cooks in 2017. People gave Bill every benefit of the doubt due to past success. He's probably the only coach in the NFL that would have gotten away with the fiasco of Judge and Patricia in 2022 and given another season after that blew up.

The Patriots have a roster problem. There was one guy who had final say on the roster every offseason of the last decade besides the most recent one. He obviously has giant level in culpability of the roster issues.
I've never denied some of his short comings. I still think if he got the QB right this time he was the best equipped to fix his own mess.

And also it did seem like his draft drought was starting to come to an end the last draft.

Belichick was out of line? For defending players?
Tell me what other coach EVER has called his own players soft in a press conference?
Mayo is so far over his head he can’t even open his mouth without making things worse.

And Mr 1-6 won’t gain much cred criticizing the goat.

I feel like you can’t really be a “players coach” who also ****-talks his players in the media to try to motivate them. Those two things don’t go together.

Obviously he wasn’t doing that in the offseason or early in the year when things hadn’t gone badly yet, so I have to imagine that since he’s doing it lately (and more often/more seriously the past couple weeks) it must feel like a betrayal in some ways. The guy who was being your buddy over the summer is now saying you’re a soft POS at the podium.

Mayo said in this morning's news conference that players have "freedom of speech." Now, that may be news to corporate America. In academia, that is the right answer to give. I'm not sure about pro sports and freedom of speech. I'll give Mayo the benefit of the doubt that his players have free rein in the media, but it's certainly not a freedom of speech issue.

Mayo doing this screams of frustration that it’s slipping away from him and his approach is failing. You don’t do this is you have any confidence that you are getting through to your players and think you are headed in the right direction

Just more of his words and actions not lining up. It's been that way since day 1.

Yes, he very much was.

I am not on Twitter. So thanks for that note.
