Belichick remarks on Mayo's "soft" comments on Pat McAfee Show - "They're not soft"

Mayo was out of line for throwing his players under the bus.

Bill's job is literally to create commentary on this sort of thing. For the most part he's avoided the Patriots and I wish he didn't say what he said but he's not out of line.
Not all coaches keep these things internal. Tuna did this in front of the media all the time. Also case in point just from this season. Not hard to understand what he was really saying…

No experience? I thought he 'ran the defense' the last few years. Is that not true now?
Welcome to the Kraft PR machine that's been propping this guy up with smoke and mirrors for 5 years. Works great when you do mystery work that allows you to soak up credit for the good and deflect all blame for the bad. Doesn't work quite as great when accountability becomes part of the job.

Everyone has a different style, Parcells used to publicly throw players under the bus to motivate them. Works for some and doesn't for others.
Parcells was an old school, hard nosed coach. Mayo was reported to be a next generation, players coach. Now you are saying that Mayo is an old school, hard nosed coach? Which is it? Old school coach or a players coach?

You're not going to get a real answer. The house of cards has come crashing down.

STFU.

Don’t take the bait.

Let him have his rant. We all know he only does it to get you going.

Ignore him.

That’s what you could do. But you don’t.
Fck that, I mostly ignore ihm... funny how not one of you guys confront him with this same proposition. Not once...

Blaming Bill for the roster when the Commanders were exactly the same spot as us, new GM, new coaching staff, and they've gone about their business fairly well without even mentioning the previous regime. They assessed who they wanted to resign, who to go after during FA, and draft, and now how the coaches have coached their players. They've done exactly what our guys have done and they've done it well and our guys have done a ****ing **** job. All they've done is blame Bill. It's the same with the anti Bill crowd. Blame the guy who brought us to 9 SBs and 6 SB titles and not the current regime who look completely clueless. It's the most bizarre **** I've seen from home fans treating a legend who did all that for the team you support.

That run defense that Bill is talking up from last season was so amazing it had to have been a season game changer... don't believe me? Look right here:
Boy, you can really turn being wrong into an art form.

It is a political thing. Most are on the left, even far left, and hate Bill because he wrote Trump a letter that Trump read at a campaign rally.
Is this real or are you just screwing around?

They weren't. It's an offensively driven league and their problem was defense last year. They also drafted higher than us and got a better QB. We had different problems and they had better tools to deal with them. It was also a much better free agency if you needed more defensive players. We really needed solid offensive players and the options were limited.

It's not bizarre either, you can acknowledge Bill's success in the past and respect it without turning your brain off to all his mistakes that led to this. If you can't do that, you just aren't having an honest discussion.

This is a bad look for Belichick but it's clear by now that he thinks of Mayo the way he thinks of Mangini.
Seems Mayo did do all he could to grease the skids for Bill’s firing, knowing his contract said he’d be the successor.

It's a cope because people need ulterior motives for someone disagreeing with them and often the people who claim to hate politics the most interject it into everything.

Bill's mediocre drafting the last 10 years has been an open NFL secret that was acknowleded even beyond Patriots fans for years. The WR issue has been a thing since we got rid of Cooks in 2017. People gave Bill every benefit of the doubt due to past success. He's probably the only coach in the NFL that would have gotten away with the fiasco of Judge and Patricia in 2022 and given another season after that blew up.

The Patriots have a roster problem. There was one guy who had final say on the roster every offseason of the last decade besides the most recent one. He obviously has giant level in culpability of the roster issues.

Oh, here we go again . . .

They may not be soft players, but they sure as hell aren’t playing hard. And it’s Mayo’s responsibility to get them to play hard, if he can’t get effort then he isn’t doing a good job.
If only he added that to his public statement when he threw them under the bus.

That would be fair, fair warning before he drops the hammer. But he doesn’t know how to do that.

“Stats are for losers”
- your hoodied hero

Not sure if this was posted but McCourty chimed in -

“Why is this team not tough? When you hear a team isn’t tough and they are soft, you think, ‘What is the head coach doing?’ How is he getting them ready to go? Mayo and that staff have a lot of questions to answer going into next week.”

Yikes...

We know he’s a lost cause.

What he said rings true:
“The first thing I think of is toughness isn’t a skillset. You don’t need to be fast or do anything special to be tough. The second part of that is: Why, Jerod?” McCourty asked.
