Nobody seems to have seen this, but Breer talked to the Houston coaches and got their thoughts on Maye. They don't seem to be very impressed.

Breer: What Texans coaches thought of Drake Maye in first NFL start

"'Overall, he's above the line in a lot of areas, but maybe not elite in any one of them. Good accuracy, good arm strength, good athlete, good kid.'

"I caught up with a couple of Texans coaches over the course of the last few days," Breer said, as seen in the video player above. "One said to me, 'I'd give him an incomplete grade. We gave them those two long touchdowns in man coverage. He put the ball there, that's good on him. But I wonder now if more teams will play them in zone coverage so he has to decipher what's going on out there.'

Uh huh. Whatever losers. The anti- Drake stuff out there is stunning. Wonder if it drives him a bit. It might.

Unprofessional to badmouth a guy from another team. They should spend more time worrying about why Stroud is not playing as well this year as he did last year. Maybe defenses have adjusted to him as well.

Let’s see how they turn out this year, they’re 5-2, 4 of 5 by less than a TD, their best win so far was by a FG at home vs Buffalo, they got massacred by the Vikings. They’ll win their dog crap division but I’ll believe they can beat a healthy KC or Baltimore in the playoffs when I see it.

I do not think it's so bad what they said about him. I do not think it was badmouthing him.
Texans have one of the best defenses in teh nFL and I am sure they are not quaking in their boots over a rookie QB in his first NFL game.

Right now, they are probbaly right. Everything is good but not amazing.
Nothing is shouting out "elite skill". Williams has elite arm strength and elite playmaking ability. Daniels has elite running skill and accuracy. Maye does not yet.
He is definitely more skilled than Mac Jones that is for sure.
Hardly a slam dunk that he is going to be a top 5 QB in this league.
Maybe, but too soon to know.

The Texans, for years NE has been their daddy, they get one win and think they’re hot stuff, go kick rocks.

He's probably already there as far as processing the field. I mean he is elite already in his ability to work through his reads. It's uncanny and unusual for a QB in his second start as young as he is.

What is important is the reading and diagnosing. Purdy has an average or below average arm, but reads everything well. Maye goes through his reads, sees the blitz well, and does not panic. I think he will continue to improve and has the mind to succeed. I think reading the blitzing better this game than last shows improvement which I think is very encouraging.

Maye is going to be an absolute stud in this league based upon early returns. He hangs in the pocket and takes hits. He as you said reads the field really well, has an elite arm and seems to be very very smart.

“I’d give him an incomplete grade.” is really the only thing here. Nothing else to be said at this phase that is definitive, but apparently Houston has all the answers and the crystal ball.

That’s a team that has zero conference championship appearances, is the only NFL team to never win a road playoff game and their best QB has been Matt Schaub up to this point. A team that will inevitably get F’d in the A by Chiefs, Ravens, Bills, etc once playoffs come around.

I love the “we gave him those touchdowns” bs. Such a line of bs. They’re not going to say how they really feel. More than likely they’re pissed he’s not with them instead of us. I really do think drake has a chance to excel IF they fix the 1 or 2 (lol) glaring, falling, and obvious holes. He was NOT setup to succeed. This is HR job personnel 101 that kids out of college know. If you don’t set them up, they fail. Fact is it wasn’t 100% the new coaches if you know what I mean. Oh one other thing…who the **** wears letterman jackets in the pros? Oh yea, the guys that don’t like, or actually really like him. I’m sure drake at least does t have to wear one of those. Definitely a benefit of being on this losing. Team.

Incomplete grade seems fair. The kid has only started 2 NFL games. It's hard to judge him with the crap he has to work with.

He is also only 21.

How would they grade CJ Stroud's 47% comp percentage, 86 yard passing performance in a loss to the Packers yesterday, I wonder?

The commentary is slightly overblown but still, I don't think they're really in position to pass any judgment here. They don't have some strong record of identifying QBs or developing them.

They probably don't care about that, it's a completely new staff.

no coaching staff is going to give an interview and trash a player on another team.

I always love the, yeah we gave him those two TDs, but if we would have played it different…

Yeah, if I would have made different life choices my life would be different too. What a dumba$$ comment
I would've won the lottery if I had just picked the right numbers . . .

Is Maye the only untouchable player on the roster? I can't pinpoint anyone else.

A Weei caller suggested Patriots draft Ward or Ewers in case Maye doesn't work out. I think he was high.

He's young ... like all young players (especially QB's)
will he be able to adapt and evolve to scheme's that will exploit his weaknesses?
Brady did not get elite QB accolades until 2005 ... 3 Suoer Bowl victories later.
As we all know ... elite skills is one thing but without an elite brain those skills are useless.

I am very interested in the draft because this team needs a lot.

My guess is yes. He already seems to understand what defenses are doing. Will there be things that trip him up? Sure, but thing with him is usually he see stuff once and then doesn't forget it.

They said he hit the TD's in man coverage, perhaps team will not play much man against him and make him process zone, well they tried that this week and he killed zone coverage. So the Texans coaches say too good to play man against, next team tries zone and that does not work.
Texans say Good accuracy, good arm strength, Good athlete, Good kid.
Yeah, pretty amazing words from opponent coaches in his very first NFL game.
Mind you this all with an underwhelming set of receivers and lineman.

Let us remind you of the Tom Brady scouting report

Poor build. Very skinny and narrow. Ended the ’99 season weighing 195 pounds and still looks like a rail at 211. Looks a little frail and lacks great physical stature and strength. Can get pushed down more easily than you’d like. Lacks mobility and ability to avoid the rush. Lacks a really strong arm. Can’t drive the ball down the field and does not throw a really tight spiral. System-type player who can get exposed if he must ad-lib and do things on his own.
