No you play him after the bye and starting next year because there is a monster difference between a 21 year old kid making the jump from a smaller college starting week 1 with all the pressure and expectations of being THE man while lasting a full 25% longer season taking vicious hits against bigger, stronger, faster athletes versus giving that same kid 3 months to figure out NFL speed in practice, showing him how to study and prepare at an NFL level behind a Vet QB, and giving him unpressured time to work on footwork and other deficiencies in his game. I do think he should get his feet wet this year but throwing him into the deep end behind an offensive, offensive line is a good way to ruin his career before it starts.
Im willing to be patient and give Drake Maye the best chance to reach his full top 20 QB of all time potential and history is pretty clear sitting at least part of your rookie year is the best way to do that. Yeah Brisket sucks, losing with him isnt fun, but i am grateful for him taking the hits that might otherwise Derail a bright future. Getting hit is part of any Qbs job and eventually Maye is going get plastered too but i want him to have seen NFL speed in practice for 3 months and be comfortable with the offense before he does.
