Tua

Yes, MIA could have their doctors judge him healthy enough to play. If he gets any long-term injury, the MIA franchise will lose a very, very large court case.

I suppose Tua could appeal to the player's association and try to get a second opinion and the union's support. If he gets that, both the NFL AND MIA are on the hook if MIA won't pay the injury guarantee and force him to play for his money.

My guess is that there will be a negotiation and a settlement. I would be shocked if Tua plays again.

The doctors will examine the circumstances of this injury. His concussion was very likely caused due to his pervious condition. The "hit" was not at all severe.

The last part is the most important part, Tua is getting serious concussions from lesser and lesser hits. It sucks that he needs to give up playing, but I doubt you would find a neurosurgeon out there who would endorse Tua continuing to play. And the Dolphins would be crazy to rely on team doctors, they are going to have to get get multiple independent approvals from neurologists if they are even thinking of putting him back out there.

No, it kinda really isn't. Tua isn't the first guy to suffer multiple concussions.

Pretty hypocritical to quote guys who already played full careers. And they have no more skin in Tua's decision than you or me.

The guys who have fencing responses and get rushed to the hospital for concussions is unique. Players who have multiple concussions are not. But we see what happen to a significant number of the guys with a lot of concussions. Some get ALS. Some personality change and their lives end tragically (see Junior Seau). Others have significant other issues.

The odds of Tua having potential life ending issues later in life is far higher than most players because of his many significant concussions. If he plays after this, he is playing Russian Roulette with his future. He may think the money is worth the risk. I think it isn't worth it.

And it doesn't matter what you, I, or anyone thinks about this. Tua and his family are going to make the decision and without our input. I don't get your beef with people giving their opinion on a message board. It has no bearing in the real world. People with "no skin in the game" give their opinions on message boards all over the Internet every day on a wide variety of things. I am not saying this to get political, but as an example. Millions of people gave their opinion on whether Joe Biden should have gotten out of the race. None had skin in the game because they are not President or looking to stay in the White House.

Everyone has skin in the game of who is president.

It is easy for people with no skin in the game to tell other people what to do.

Tua has about 120 million reasons to keep playing.
And he has about 100 million reasons to quit right now.

I'm having difficulty relating to the argument that Tua should keep playing, because 'he will be walking away from so much money'.

The guy has already earned enough money that he, his children, future grandchildren and great grandchildren are all financially set for life.

What's the point in all that cash if you're reduced to drooling in the corner with no idea where you are or what year it is?

It's got to be difficult to have this skill and not be able to use it.

If you compare to RGIII his knees just wouldn't let him do it anymore so he had no choice.

Must be harder to still physically be able to do it but then have concussions which obviously there is a lot of data about now that we didn't have in the past but it's not like we can predict wether he would become the next Seau or just be like most other ex players who are mostly very functional.

It's easy to say it's not worth it but then again some would give up almost anything to be able to play but we just don't have the skill.

I feel for him it's a very tough position to be in.

Tua makes bad decisions.

They've loaded him up with talent, but Flores was right.

Maybe Flores approach was wrong, but all the hugging/loving from the current coach is resulting in him getting killed.

Stupid stuff like this probably drove Flores crazy.

Here’s to hoping he doesn’t become a statistic later on in life…

Not on of those 120 million reasons will make a hill of beans difference in his actual day-to-day life. He had enough money to do, well, anything he wants to do.

You have no idea what his financial goals are.
His call, but he's risking a lot, and if it's just for financial reasons, he's a fool.
Like I said: It is easy for people with no skin in the game to tell other people what to do.

If I'm the Dolphins I'm on the phone right now with Andy Reid to acquire Bailey Zappy.

Why? I’m told he is garbage by the haters

Something else to think about is he’s had what, 4 concussions total in college and pro ball? That we know about…that fact there is something to think about. Whether one was “missed” due to him not reporting it/showing signs, or them just blatantly/malevolently not reporting it, OR could have tua and the trainers agreed to not talk about it? There’s soooooo much info we don’t/can’t know about that it almost makes it a real headache to even think about it. Yet here I/we am/are . He could have had several in the time before college started. Feel free to correct me if my #s are off for his total # of concussions.

The only thing I disagree with is that it is still Tua’s decision. If I am the Dolphins, or any other professional football franchise, at any level, I’m not letting him play unless multiple independent neurosurgeons or neurologists sign off on it. Otherwise they are looking at major lawsuits down the road. And I don’t believe that just having him sign a waiver taking full responsibility is enough to cover it, especially given the financial stakes. The NFL needs to address these situations to provide teams with a way to adequately compensate players who make the healthy decision, and give cap relief to the franchises dealing with these situations. Today it’s the fish, tomorrow it could be any other franchise.

Big incentive for the Dolphins if he retires rather than being declared unfit to ever return. That's awkward for the League - likely there will be some sort of injury settlement compromise.

FWIW, I'm sure there are scientists who can estimate the force involved in the concussion by closely analyzing the tape, but it's hard to be an armchair analyst and say this hit was clearly a "lesser" hit than the previous ones.

Per Florio (yeah, I know), Tua's contract gave the Dolphins the right to purchase insurance to offset about $12.3M a year of his contract over the next four years. If I understand the CBA correctly, such insurance would save them money, but would not be credited to their salary cap.

Practice squad players can't be traded. Dolphins just need to claim Zappe.
