NFL GAME DAY DISCUSSION Week 1 "Other Games" Thread

TJ Watt is the best defensive player in any game he plays in. He's way better than his older brother and he was pretty good.

My best friend is a Browns fan and as much as we like to bust each other's balls I just can't do it now. When I ask him how he feels about the Deshaun Wantsome deal he just drops his head and starts gently sobbing. I feel bad for him and the Browns fans.

The games don't seem to be as entertaining as they used to be.

I know it's early but the refs seem to be getting worse instead of better. You would think that they could have streamlined the replays and got the results out quicker too. I guess I should expect that with all those former Jets at HQ.

I'm also starting to have some sympathy for the Panthers fans. That's one horrible team with not much of a future. I still can't believe that I didn't pick against them in the suicide pool.

I keep seeing defensive players celebrate like it's new year's eve after they make plays, even on plays that were average or after a decent gain. It seems like those players expend far too much energy jumping around on every play and could run out of gas quicker.

It's great to see Mayo get a win in his first game.

I know Kelce's game is very one dimensional but until it actually stops working he's the best TE in the game. That said he didn't do much in the opener.
And he's been durable.. Kittle a great player.. but aways hurt too.

49ers are still REALLY good. My first week overreaction: It will be really hard to imagine them not meeting up with the Chefs again in February.
49ers should be in the NFCCG with their talent and coaching at bare minimum. The Lions are too Jekyll and Hyde for me. One week they put up 40, but then struggle to put up 20 the next week. Packers are a work in progress. We already know the Cowboys will put up 12-13 wins, but lose immediately in the playoffs. I need to see more from the Eagles before putting them back as a threat to the 49ers.

Eagles, Lions, Niners
Super Bowl lovers curse is for real

Did the jets lose people on d this offseason or are the niners just that good? Last i remember their OL wasn’t particularly strong outside of Williams

Huff, and Reddick is holding out. Sauce needs to add some weight on his slender frame he was getting trucked by the back. That Jets defense looks terrible. Also thier LBs are getting older quinnen Williams getting doubled and trippled.

SF is good but dam did Purdy even get touched?

I think the loss of John Franklin-Myers is a bigger deal than Huff. Also, Mosley has ranged from utter *ss to not good in his time there. Bringing him back was a bad idea. They expected Javon Kinlaw and Reddick to replace those JFM and Huff, but Kinlaw isn't the same type of player as JFM and hasn't seemed to be an impactful player for them through camp or in the 1st game.

Reddick is probably still in Japan dressed up like a geisha so that trade is working out really well for them. Apparently, it didn't cross Joe Douglass' mind to check if a guy who was telling the Eagles he wasn't going to play on his current deal would play on his current deal for them..

That's right JFM.. I forgot about him.. well Reddick is in the same boat as judon. Nonetheless neither has been extended. Kinlaw looked lost on defense. How you attack the 9ners are in thier secondary That's weaker part of thier defense.. Rogers couldn't get any rhythm on offense. CJ Mosley and Quincy Williams are getting older. The Jets maybe In a defensive revamp soon. I still don't see Rodgers making it though this season.

I agree. I think they will get there. But I'm not confident after that. Especially with Shanahan as HC.

GB is too young imo. Love still needs to improve his accuracy. Though, I think he has the talent to be a top 5 QB in the league. I'd take him over Lawrence going forward.

Eagles are the one team I think will seriously challenge SF. Hurts needs to be great though.

Only 2 QBs have made it through a full season at age 40 or over. Brady and Favre. The stats for QBs in games they do play at that age are... abysmal. Even if you believe that advancements in sports medicine can keep QBs playing longer.. it seems very unlikely that Rodgers will play the whole season (with 17 games now) and be effective during that whole time.

If their run game doesn't take off soon.. teams are going to unload on him in the pocket too. He'll start taking a lot of hits.

Love out 3 to 6 weeks, they're probably dead.

A couple random notes from the 1st week.
Trent Brown looks done, I think the lower body injuries have caught up to him, he was cooked in game 1. I think he's done after this season.

JC Latham was the 2nd OT taken in the draft, brutal pass blocking in pre-season and the 1st game for the Titans. Run blocking is good but lots of work to do on pass blocking.

Zach Frasier: center for the Steeler 2nd round looks like he'll be the next great Steeler center, they just keep finding them.

MHJ: Not a good first game, 1 easy drop, 1 catch 4 yards but Kyler Murray and the OC did not help. I think he looks slow, but he has such big strides, but then I see TE's beating him 5 yards down field regularly on routes so not sure. Not sharp on routes, rounded cuts, not many moves, found plenty of space in zone defense to be ignored by Murray, got behind defense by 20 yards on a zone and Murray was busy running the other way, by time he came back he was less open as safety ran back. Polk was better in game 1 than MHJ so a slow start for him.

Malik Nabors: For his sake hope they draft a QB with the top 3 pick next year. My #1 WR in the draft, already a #1 WR in the NFL too bad you won't know it with Daniel Jones throwing to him. I think he could have had 20 receptions. Had 5.
Below is typical, he was the first read and wide open at the 38, I know the LB at 32 looks like he has to throw over him but he just moved there as he was 2 steps to his left but followed the 5 second Jones stare down, if Jones threw it when he should have, he was immaterial, even now, he can just put it in there, he NEVER throws it. He scrambles and throws out of bounds. What good is a true stud #1 WR without a good QB? No good at all. THIS is why you draft the stud QB, especially a once in a decade prospect like Maye.
Malik Nabors would be rookie of the year on a team with an average QB. Jones should just throw every pass to Nabors, probably have better stats. NABORS IS A STUD, TOP 10 WR IN NFL TODAY. A TRUE #1. Better than MHJ,and might be better by quite a bit. Think Giants will take the next 2 #1's for Nabors?

The Yets have a ton of talent, but still not sure they're a Team, and that starts with Fraudgers doing his job, which he didn't, because he's an Ahole only in it for himself.
I'd argue they're less talented this year than they were last year.

Their defensive line lost JFM and Huff and their replacements weren't very good and they don't have much depth there despite spending a lot of draft capital on it. The LBs weren't a strength and Mosley is now another year older.

However, I think it's their offensive line that took the biggest step backwards. They got older, slower and a lot more injury prone there. Morgan Moses and Tyron Smith are both pretty old. They can pass block fine, but expecting them to get a lot of push on defensive lineman throughout a whole game is asking a lot of them. John Simpson is a pretty big guy, but he's never graded out well as a run blocker and I wouldn't want to rely on him being fast enough to pull to get out in front Breece Hall.

Even before then; I remember seeing him do an interview during his early SNL days and talking about watching Bruins games on TV38 while growing-up in New Hampshire…
So now you made me have that old Channel 38 Bruins game theme music playing endlessly in my head.

Hey wait a minute. I just signed to the eagles. Says saquan Barkley...

Jets gave them no resistance.. they let them do anything they wanted on offense.
After one game it's tough to know which is the most true. Are the 9ers dominant, the Jets worse than we thought, or both?

My gut tells me the Jets aren't this bad. They have alot of talent, and this was likely their most difficult game of the season. I expect them to improve and likely finish somewhere around 11 or 12 wins.

As for the 49ers I will look at the body of work over the last few years. If not for the Chiefs and Mahomes they would be a dynasty candidate at this point. Had they pulled off the OT win last February we would be having very different conversations about them. While I do believe their window is closing a bit, they still have the combination of talent, top tier coaching, and a front office that makes good choices most of the time.

Most of the time I don't use the word "if" but imagine if they had not made the Trey Lance mistake?

Bo Nix review
This is why when someone says first round picks are a crap shoot and I say no they are not as they pretty much play to their college tape if you actually know how to analyze college tape you can get about 90% correct on first round QB's.

Bo Nix showed almost no ability in college to be an NFL QB. He can scramble and has solid arm strength, BIG DEAL, so do 50 other college guys.

I will say in this game he faced a ton of pressure, however he had many opportunities and had great field position all game.

His Dink and dunk stats form college don't translate to the NFL, his inability to anticipate throws, read a defense or accurately throw past 10 yards translates.

So: Good arm strength, good scrambler, dinks and dunks well, inaccurate past 10 yards, slow thru progressions, does not throw with anticipation. Sound like a guy you should draft, like, at all? Did not think so,

He had 15 passes go close to 0 yards or more, 6 of them should have been or were picked, 1 other was a possible pick. He completes 2 of those as slants, not sure I count slants as downfield but for him I did, he almost got the WR killed by the safety on both completions.

Wildly inaccurate, stuck on first read, missed many open guys, had 2 TD's on deep balls but never looked.
He throws a mean swing pass and 3 yard out!

In summary Not and NFL QB but any moron that watched 5 minutes of his college tape could have told you that.
The question is why some teams can't see past college stats and "arm strength" to evaluate a college QB.

Sean Payton has never shown he can run a good offense without Drew Brees and now he has a crap QB with no ability to throw past 5 yards. Good luck Denver!

My assessment is the Jets seemed content on the run they miscalculated with Mcaffre being out. If a team really wants to stop the run they will. This was a game the Jets should have won.. Aiyuk was a non factor. They let the running back get going and they let Deebo get going. Personally I believe the eagles are the most all all round dangerous offense in the NFC, then I'd go Detroit then SF.
