OT: These NFL games are too long

IMO we've hit the NFL's "jumping the shark" moment.

Too many commercials, no flow to the game.

Too many game days (Thu, Fri, some Sat, Sun, Mon) so it's no longer "event viewing".

It's become like MLB or NBA, so many games on so often that none seem important any more.

Shamelessly glomming onto Taylor Swift's fame.

Making some games "exclusive content" just to force fans to buy into yet another corporate platform they don't want.

I get it, they're doing it because they can, but IMO it's a sign that the bubble's gonna burst.

There is such a thing as too much of a good thing, and NFL is doing everything they can to be just that.

I noticed this opening night. It felt way too long and it continued on Sunday.

Always DVR and skip them. I can't stand the commercials!
Me too, have had a few different Tivos since the analog TV days of the 1990s and have no plans to give it up.

I presume the youtube tv stuff doesn't let you skip commercials, but haven't looked into it.

The questionable internet feed ( ) I use to stream here in the southeast has no ads during breaks. Just funky instrumental music and a “We’re In A Commercial Break” screen. It was surprisingly pleasant. FWIW… YMMV. PAYOR.

On the downside, I have to watch on the iPad.

I used to do whatever NFL+ used to be called, and they would have an option to watch without commercials and an option to play only when the ball was hiked. That was a fast way to watch a game!

The NFL Channel posts game highlights of many of the games that do all the key plays in 10-15 minutes or so:

NFL

Decent content for watching while exercising, etc.

EDIT: if you hover over the link you see I went to NFL Channel on u2b and did a search for 2024 Week 1 highlights...

I don’t think the bubble bursts. It’s the new generation. The game will change, it already has changed from the 70s. 10 years from now it will be the CFL/Arena league on steroids. 20 years from now We won’t watch on tv anymore, be all on your phone connected to our brains through some chip already in out brain. They’ll just take money out of our account. Do you want the full 8hr game with commercials at $1050.00 Blink once for yes, two for no. Do you want full game with added on field experience where you can go into the game as the starting qb without commercials for $14500.00 . Blink 3 times for yesblink 4 times for no .

Women should be happy with that scenario because they'll finally make more money then men...

Does everyone here enjoy a little football while watching commercials???
What's the old joke.......
I went to a commercial festival and a football game broke out

You left out

17 game season
7 playoff teams
Only 1 playoff bye week team per season

I think we're only gonna see more monetization grabs from the NFL, as they just became the final major sports league - and honestly, one of the very few industries in general - to give into private equity. Owners can now sell minority stakes to private equity

The hulking behemoth price tag of team valuations invites the opportunity for outside investment, and in turn, outside interests to continue to carve out seats at the bargaining table (though the restrictions the NFL has put on that minority stake are quite... well, restrictive).

The ironic thing is the Patriots game finished significantly before 4PM. Because of all the running by the Pats, the game ended early. Most of the other games went on for at least another ten minutes or more.

Having a second tv set up with the red zone channel on works well.
