In mayos media assistant isn't Slater somehow suppose to be in that role?
seriously, he needs to hire a teenager, one who knows their parents monitor their social media and is very familiar with the concept of TMI (too much information)

Hopefully based on his new tone that's he's rolled back on the TMI.. I do like that he's assertive more. He's growing into the job..

yeah. it will take a little bit, but I think he's smart and will get there.
Agreed. Mike Tomlin for example was a bit like mayo I remember during pressers when he took over.

Tomlin - who is a complete dink - is a really good coach, for the most part. If Mayo can achieve that, then he's done alright for himself.

Let's be real, this team isn't going to be good this year. Mayo needs the team to show some level of growth and competency so that they are playing to their potential, whatever that is. If he can slowly remove first year mistakes, show some situational football awareness, has the locker room motivated, and maybe can steal a couple of win here and there to show that they aren't a total dead carcass, then you can feel good about seeing how he does with an upgrade.

Yeah, I feel like Belichick (much like Brady) kind of spoiled us as to what a typical, successful coach looks like. Tomlin has no losing seasons and (when he had a good QB in his prime) won a super bowl. That's better than 95% of coaches who get a chance in this league. If Mayo ends up as good as Tomlin, we should be thrilled.

Roster isn't in a spot to compete so win total won't be the best barometer IMO. To evaluate the coaching staff, I will be looking for:

1) Do the schemes on both sides of the ball seem cohesive and make sense?
2) Are young players developing over the course of the year?
3) Does the locker room seem unified and focused throughout the year?
4) Do the in-game management strategies make sense?
5) Does the team play with a competitive spirit and mindset each game?
6) Are there signs of good in-game and week to week adjustments?
7) Does the team play disciplined football (i.e. keeping mental composure, avoiding stupid penalties, knowing the intricacies of the rules, etc.)?

Sort of. Tomlin's claim to fame was first working with Dungy coaching the secondary. Then he got a DC gig for one year in Minnesota and benefited from offenses not even attempting to run at Pat and Kevin Williams. He got the gig in Pittsburgh and he done well. As much as we don't like him, the results speak for themselves - he still hasn't had ONE losing season there.

Mayo has his shot to get away from Bill's shadow and show us what he's got.

I agree with the general consensus around 1 establishing a disciplined and hard nosed playing style, 2 developing young players and 3 earn the respect of the players/established unified locker room. Mayo was hired for his leadership capability so he should get a couple of years to get points one and two right. If the players don't follow his lead or act out in ways that are detrimental to the team, he should be let go at the end of the year. So far he seems to acting as a confident and determined if inexperienced leader who the players seem ready to support. The Judon situation is a good example where he initially tried to be the nice guy who drew some sort of line when that didn't work. The hard part will be maintaining cohesiveness when the losses start to pile up.

I hope it works out. If Maye is the messiah it probably will. If not it likely won’t. That said…. I would have hired Vrabel.

By mid-2025, I expect to see the return of a professional culture. That means fewer stupid penalties and special teams mishaps, no more Jones / Baker / Boutte public screwups, no more complaining to the media. I want to see guys who are focused on football and know how to stay disciplined.

Just want to see a clean operation and the team continue to fight despite what looks like is going to be a rough year. I want to see his assistants be able to get growth out of its players.

Seems like in preseason we saw this most everywhere but the OL. Defense looked very disciplined and in the right position to make plays. Seems They have done a fine job developing maye to this point. Pop and Thornton may be poised to make a leap this year, polk already looks ready. But this was preseason so we’ll get the real test now. No more backup opponents and vanilla schemes to play against so we’ll see if it keeps up.

The OL had way too many infractions and haven’t seen wallace really threaten for a starting gig. Robinson has had some positive reports but he looked out of place a few times against Washington. We’ll need to see major improvements here. I get the talent may not allow it to be a good unit this year but you at least want to see them clean up the mental errors

Just win baby

That's it.

First time head coach with limited experience inheriting a team with very little talent, I always thought that Mayo was a one and done. Not so much because I thought he was going to be a bad coach but the hand he was dealt was too much for a newbie to overcome. Then he started talking about transparency and now they are roasting him because he said it is a competition, then it wasn't, then it still is etc etc.

He portrayed himself as an anti-belichick coach, which was probably what most wanted to hear. Well good in theory but this sh**t aint easy !! I see a lot of posters here saying they are willing to give him a couple of years. I think thats a lot easier to say now. but if we run off 5 straight losses out of the gate we, as well as I might be singing a different tune.

That run with Bill/Brady may never be repeated. We got spoiled plain and simple. Unless you have been around those Ron Erhardt, Ron Meyer, Rod Rust years (Stay away from coaches with Rs) its difficult to appreciate just how hard it is to keep this up.

I've said personally.. and @Pape agreed that if Mayo ended up having a career similar to Tomlin that's something to be very proud of. As you've said NEVER had a losing season. He's been the HC what 18 seasons?
