Patriots Player Departure OFFICIAL 2024 Patriots Roster Cutdown Day Discussion

Maybe the pats feel they can get a trade pick out of 1 of the teams if their wide receiver gets injured. So keeping all 7 +1 just to get a trade pick now or later. Strong feeling Bourne and Osborn get traded if Thornton and Polk come along nice.

Reagor is Thornton insurance for now .

Only question is with the line being so porous, will any of our receivers get balls thrown their way?

The only thing that can save us from a bottom five season is if the offensive line miraculously recovers and plays well... but I don't believe in miracles. A WR won't move the needle at all.
The OL could become functional, though I have low expectations for week 1 away:
- Oko could be OK at left tackle - he has the athleticism, size, and NFL experience. I like what I see with him, including his attitude.
- say a Hail Mary for Sow to be ok, cause otherwise we're starting 2 rookies on the OL
- Andrews will settle down the line, and say a 2nd Hail Mary that he's ready to go cause there's no depth at center
- I don't know what we'll do at RG-RT: Onwenu inside/Wallace outside, with Robinson on the bench? or Robinson at G with Onwenu at RT? Either combination involves a rookie starting. I prefer the Onwenu/Wallace combo.

I think by week 2 they'll start looking better if they stay healthy. In week 5 they'll have a reinforcement in Strange if he's ready.

Easier said than done, but I agree they need at least two other olinemen, one tackle and at least a backup center. I’d be looking for a guard, too.
Not holding my breath that we're gonna pick up a starter on waivers - we are what we are. A depth piece would be nice though.

Me either, but I think they need to try and find one, probably two to be honest. I’m not sure they even have 5 startable guys.

Might be a bit homeristic but i think with a solid line maye could flourish with the current wr set, provided he doesn’t have alot of trouble once he sees regular season defensive schemes vs a preseason defense. Our wr’s aren’t world beaters but if thornton continues to create seperation like in preseason along with polk, douglas, and eventually bourne maye will have enough weapons. Solid te in henry too, a rookie qbs best friend.

I Would still like wr upgraded eventually but yes i think our next focus should be purely on the line unless this group miraculously holds up.

Disagree on athleticism, he doesn't have it. He has long arms though and Wolf seem enamored with that, he also has decent size. He might be serviceable as a guy who doesn't;t give up a lot of sacks but gives you nothing in the run game.

It can't look worse... can it?

Sure... but where is the "solid line" coming from?

Most likely the 25 draft , like i said this should be the next focus but im not envisioning anything being available soon
Then don't play Maye, at least in the first month where he has to face the 49ers and Jets defense in back to back weeks.

Our line is abysmal...

Easy: Waiver claims and UFA signings.
Not easy, they are unknown. You're talking about cutting 6 guys you know for guys who aren't employed. I think it's far from a slam dunk.

That sounds like the plan. Brissett starts the first 4 weeks at least. That allows us to let Drake see what real defenses look like and decide if we can afford to put him out there with the current line.

The talking heads were eyeing week 5 at home vs miami but id wait longer if the line still looks the way i expect it to. See if strange can return at any point or one of wallace/robinson is ready and capable later on this year.

6 guys we know that few would miss, and who belong on the Practice Squad

Well, yeah, but you're talking about swapping your **** for someone else's ****. I look at it like this: You have a a business, you have employees. some are stellar, some are ok, and some suck. You can fire the ones who suck, but you'd better have a plan to replace them, otherwise you're creating a mess for yourself. Maybe you get rid of the bottom feeder employees, but you're just swapping those issues that require constant management with newer, different issues that you don't know. You know that these, lets say 6 employees, are a pain in the ass for _______ reasons, but you're able to manage them and hide their shortcomings. If you launch them, and if you can replace them from the limited pool of available people who want to work, there's no guarantee that the new people will work out. Better to find folks that you know are improvements over the bottom of your team than to swap crap for newer, different crap. It takes time.

TL/DR, anyone can fire folks, but you gotta be able to replace the fired ones.

We have a starting LT who should be at best fighting for an NFL job.
We don't even have a backup LT.
We need an additional ILB with Takitaki and Mapu out.
On a running team, we need another RB.
=====================
We have zero need for so many CB's and WR's. If cut, they wouldn't be replaced. So, we have those 2-3 roster spots.

We might have come down to fewer WR's and CB's just to make the situation more clear. However, I think that we will continue to try to get a 6th or 7th out of someone.

So if there's another LT cut, is he equal to or greater than the Pats current roster? Probably, but it's far from a yes.

Right, but you are replacing them with guys who are the same. PS players.

It goes to show you how good Bill was when he was on his game. The guy at 53rd on the roster could still contribute, and Bill knew how to hide his weaknesses. That was the Pats strength. The guys at the bottom of the roster could still play, thru either superior coaching, scouting or both. They don't have that now, and haven't for some time.

In what world does Wallis have more upside than Reagor?
The one where Reagor is in his fifth season and has done nothing other than a couple of decent returns and Wallis is a rookie with upside.

I can't get past D3

And I'll take a couple of decent returns in regular season games over a couple decent returns in preseason quarter 3 or 4.

Based on Sports hub report Wallis is not coming back here we'll see if another team takes him.
