Exactly. People retroactively want to pretend Mac, for insatnce, was always awful. But the truth was he was a high floor, low ceiling QB and pretty much did that in 2021. But the more he felt pressure in our **** offense, he never got the chance to improve and slowly lost confidence and started regressing and the high floor eroded

You absolutely can hang a QB out to dry too early and mismanage their development and ruin them. There's never been a QB who sat that was hurt by sitting. Working on fudnamentals and waiting for the team to hit a level of competency is not going to undermine development. We've seen plenty of QB's start out looking like they had something and then breaking down under the pressure of a bad team and not having the time to really hone their craft.

I really don't get this need for instant gratification with Maye. He could be the second coming of Tom Brady and we are still a worse team than the 2019 team that got bounced by the Titans. There's literally no stakes right now on a need to fight for a Super Bowl. The only goal should be developing Maye as best as possible.

I honestly think that most of those who want Maye to play immediately are those who didn’t want them to draft him. I could be wrong, but that would be the first time I have ever been wrong, so that’s unlikely.

Let's see what he does Sunday night against Washington. Brissett has not looked good in both pre season games even though they weren't with the starters. Maybe didn't play enough in pre season game 1 and in game 2 he looked ready. Let's play him a Qtr with starters. If he plays as he did in game 2 then start him in the season opener game 1. Play Brissett a Qtr with the starters and see what he does. If we are talking about a 4-13 or 6-11 then what is the difference starting Maye and having Zappe or Brissett as backup? As long as we do not destroy him in any game. Watch and protect his development by not letting a game destroy him. Brissett has a contract be fair to Zappe, give him a chance to leave if it means more playing time for him.
What do you think?

I believe he should sit the first year until we have a chance to see the OL come together better and he looks like he could handle the NFL rush. At that point instead of starting him I would like to see the team tell him in advance he will be going in for one series success or failure no matter what. This will give him some tape to see how he handled the situation and they can go forward from there maybe increasing his reps.

This way they are not setting him up to fail by starting him finding out he's not ready and pulling him and putting Brisset back in. He has a chance to gradually get ready for the game's speed at this level.

Just a thought.

I think the quickest way to learn is to play, assuming the games not too fast or too big for you which I believe for Maye it is not.

They like to say he only played 2 years of college, so has limited playing time and thus may need to sit. I NEVER hear ANYONE say, he sat the first year of college and that counts the same as the years he played. There is a reason for that.

No QB learns because of the QB starting. They learn working on their mechanics and reads without the pressure of live play. If he goes in there and the line is getting him killed, he's not going to develop the habits he needs to succeed longterm. More likely he falls back on more amatuerish habits and doesn't have the time to slow the game down and deveop what he needs.
I'm being selfish. If it's going to take the kid x amount of games to get to the point that everyone is comfortable with him then I'd like that to start now. I could be wrong of course but I think he'd learn from any mistakes and not crumble like Eason or Mac Jones.

Just guessing of course, but I think the Pats expected a longer learning period from Maye. He seems to be picking things up more quickly than they expected.

I'll be pretty upset if the Pats start Brissett and he goes 0-6, and is then followed by Maye who goes 5-6 and any hope of a playoff spot was lost because they waited for who knows what to bring him in.

Plus, if bringing in a rookie QB right away is so dangerous, why the heck are all of the other rookie QBs starting game one? Those teams also sucked last year.

I was wrong once. Well... you know the rest.

I watch zero college ball so Maye is new to me. But if he's the future of this team then I want that to happen sooner rather than later. As I mentioned earlier, the Pats thought that he was going to take time but I think he fooled them with how quickly he's picking things up. We don't know what they have in Maye but we know Brissett sucks.

The correct answer to when Maye starts is probably "when Brissett gets injured behind this OL." Any optimal timetable you have goes out the window at that point.

You must have missed the end of the 2021 season when Mac was awful.

Mac didn't lose because he felt pressure. Defenses changed the way they played Mac. Defenses packed the box and the DBs forced receivers wide daring Mac to throw the ball to the sidelines. Mac turtled because of his lack of athleticism. Maye does not lack athleticism and defenses will not try the "Mac strategy" against Maye. Two different players. They are not related.

I have no idea why posters like to compare Maye's situation to Mac's. Different QBs. Maye is younger, bigger, more athletic, and has a different personality.

I'd say he was closer to average than awful and his rating shows that. He really only had one poor game in there, the Bills game in Foxboro. Also the wind game where he almost literally did nothing.

Mac and Zappe's play last season = "awful". This stretch of games - not really.

When should Maye start and be allowed to start making mistakes?
From the gate.. IMO.. the kid has seemingly earned that. Brissett as reported has seemed to revert back to... well.... Brissett. We are in rebuilding phase... again... wether maye starts or not. We know what Brissett is. I believe he is a fine back up.. we aren't expecting to win this season I'd rather see Drake taking his lumps now and growing along with polk and baker. It would do more for next season and beyond attracting potential FAs and keeping the seats filled at Gillette. Again that's just my opinion as loyal fan!

Where is the "when he earns it" option?
Your right.. the tune from coach mayo has changed because earning it is exactly what Drake seems to be doing. Brissett continues to throw picks in practice while Drake has been accurate and commands the huddle.

The concensus is that Maye has made the decision hard for coaches. He looks more athletic and opportunistic than Brissett.

But that doesn't change the fact that there is NO benefit in starting Maye week 1 - pressure, unnecessary failure, loss of confidence.
This is a lot different than '21. Cam already had a year in the system, was steeply declining.
Mac came from a pro-offense, the team was much more complete and vet leaders.

This year, the OL will need a month to congeal. The young skill players are also trying to get up to speed.
The team is going to stink early, and probably go 1-5 or so.
So, all that's changed is that Maye will be starting sooner this season than most initially expected.
And that's good. Starting week 6 or 7 vs. Texans or Jaguars would probably make most sense.

Bill Parcells on when to start Maye:

“Fans never consider the psychological makeup of the player you’re getting ready to throw to the wolves,” Parcells recently told The Boston Globe's Dan Shaughnessy. “What you really have to judge is the timing and the chance to succeed. Sometimes if they don’t succeed, it destroys them.

The quickest way to have your confidence destroyed is to play before you have an offensive line that is capable of blocking in front of you and the knowledge to handle the complex defensive schemes that will be thrown at you

I think the best time for him to play is when the mechanics changes they've been working to make have been burned to instinct for him. When he's faced with game pressure, he's likely to revert back to what's natural. If the mechanic changes haven't been burned into his brain yet, he'll keep reverting back and it will stunt his progress there. In a practice environment, he's more likely, IMO, to think through and focus on the mechanics. Once that becomes second nature to him, I think he'll be better set up for success in games.

When Maye’s ready to play, he’ll be named the starter.

It may not be game 1, but I have a feeling this will happen pretty early in the season unless Brissett is just tearing it up.

To be most effective in 2025, Drake Maye needs (insert #1 WR free agent option) and (insert #1 LT in 2025 draft) first and foremost. Getting game experience will be nice. But not sure if it’s beneficial if it puts him in a wheelchair from the back alley beatings he’d likely take this year behind our current OL (looking at you LT, whoever you are)
