The problem with Froholdt was that he was injured here. He missed his entire first year on IR.

Then backed up for 8 games during the Cam Newton year. The OL was pretty good. Wynn, Thuney, Andrews, Mason, Onwenu.

They kept Eluemenor, Ferentz and Herron over him.

Given their huge trouble with the T position the previous season (injuries to Cannon and Wynn leading to Marshall Newhouse) it makes sense that they put a priority on keeping backups like Eluemenor and Herron.

But keeping Ferentz? Just because you needed a backup center? That one hurt. The decision seems to have been made because of Andrews's illness the previous year. Still, you kept Froholdt for 8 games into the season before releasing him.
He had a problem with getting holding calls.

That Cole Strange pick was a direct result of Bill completely mismanaging the guard spot the years prior. Franchising Thuney in a lost year, trading Mason for peanuts, then jerking around Karras on his deal. Then to add insult to injury Bill used a premium pick on a roster that badly needed help on a position he usually dedicates a mid to late round pick on. I guess even further insult to injury is the fact that Stange (when he is actually healthy) is just an average player.

Yes. It is not good draft strategy to draft for need, especially need that is self inflicted. The best drafting teams are able to sustain depth through the draft and FA and don't find themselves with gaping holes in the roster that need to be plugged allowing them to often draft the BPA, which helps solidify self-sustaining roster depth.
