It's time to move Onwenu back to RT.

He played the last two preseason games with the starters at right tackle. Injuries changed the plan in week one. That’s not a failure.

Starting in preseason means little. Conor McDermott started the last preseason game at tackle. They had no one.

I guarantee Sow will never see another snap at tackle, unless it's a Bill Murray situation where there ia no one else to play there.

Like last year.

Running with the 1’s by the end of preseason means something. Starting every game he was healthy means something. Being one of the best OL on the team as a rookie means something. In a few years if he stays on this trajectory they’ll be giving him an Onwenu type extension.

Thanks for thread Fam I'm all in.

Wozzy if they thought Sow would fare better at Tackle they would have put him there by now knowing the NEED. Maybe they like him @ Guard better.

No they wouldn’t. They realized their best bet was to move all their best players inside and try to fix the edges. That’s why Onwenu was moved back inside.

I agree. Sow will be a guard at Onwenu's level or maybe even better eventually. He's potentially a top NFL level guard.

Is he really when the bullets start to fly we will see...you were right about Chukwuma he's horrible. I'm all for moving M Onwenu to RT that solves one of our many issues.

They understand their players are really guards, not tackles, so that's how they're building.

If they were tackles, that would be where they would play. A tackle is more important than a guard. It's why they fly off the shelves in the early rounds, and you can pick up a gem of guard/center in the later ones.

You're saying they gave up on what they worked on all preseason because of a couple of weeks of injuries. That would never happen with a tackle with potential.

It really doesn't make sense.

By pretty much all accounts Sow struggled mightily at RT last year in camp. Onwenu has played RT at a decent level, but the level of play is obviously way higher at RG. Neither of those are OT prospects they moved inside to play G. Both of them were always Guard prospects who tried their hand at RT. Onwenu proved capable of it. Sow didn't really get a full shot at it, but part of that was because he didn't show a ton of promise in that spot.

Sow playing RT seems like something that would never happen because if they move one of the guards outside it would be Onwenu since he's already proven capable whereas Sow hasn't.

Nah, interior pressure and the way the game has changed tackle is no more important than guard. No team employs massive run stuffing DT’s anymore, the ideal DT is the guy who can stuff the run and create pressure on passing downs.

It’s smart for them to fix the interior by playing Sow, Andrews, Onwenu and try to fix the edges. The collaborations idea to do that was rely on Lowe who sucks, sign Chuks who sucks and draft Wallace who has potential but might be a year in the strength and conditioning program away.

Wolf is saying Lowe is looking good so he’s obviously clueless about the position.

Even though tackle might be "no more important than guard," a tackle is more important than a guard. A lot more. There were 7 tackles taken in the first round this year, and only one guard. This was not an aberration. Tackles are also paid much more. So if you think the position is as important as guard, the only explanation would be that it's far more difficult to play tackle at an acceptable level than a guard.

Did you see the offensive line combinations at practice yesterday? They had 7 players at tackle, including Layden Robinson, of all people, and Onwenu, but not Sow. Meanwhile, Sow took half his reps at guard with the second stringers. There have been plenty of opportunities to give Sow reps at tackle because everyone else seems to be getting them.

If this isn't enough evidence that at minimum this coaching staff doesn't see what you see, then I guess this discussion is over.

Gonna say it again…they need to draft 1 straight up LT and another OL that has versatility to mainly play LT and other OL positions. Then also take a FA OT. I’m saying take so many since the drafts such a crap shoot. Preferably these will be taken in rounds 1 + 2 with the 3rd coming via rounds 1-3. The more swings we take the better the chances of whatever it is we are slinging at the dartboard sticks. Outside of that, follow up with guys taken in rounds 1-5…

It would be nice if we could get the ghosts of the following players to play for us….Nate Solder, Marcus Cannon, Matt Light, Dan Connolly, Ryan Wendell, Brian Stork, Logan Mankins, Sebastian Vollmer…**** I’d go as far as saying if we could get 2 of those guys it would equal 3 of our starters now…also I’d say this would go for them being injured as well…we are sooooooooo far from how good we had it back then. Not saying I’ve lost hope in SP and coaching but we have a ways to go. I think the last few good linemen we could have kept would be Ted Karras and Joe Thuney who have both gone on to “contender” teams. I’d go as far as saying it’s a travesty and hopefully going forward we can keep more of our homegrown talent or at least keep them around longer than the first 4-5 years. FFS at least get a second contract and not ship them out the first sign they want more money.

I am going to beat my drum: best OL coach we could have hired is the assistant with the Texans.

Cole Popovich.
Yep. Shame he was ousted at the time when using common sense suggested otherwise. Especially a shame with the information we know now. Good on him and Houston for a having a great gig now

I've resisted the idea of Onwenu at RT because him at RG is, IMO, our best player (God is that sad). At RT, he's not nearly as good. That being said, might be best for the team with how Robinson is reportedly looking solid enough to play...

LT Lowe / Wallace / Okorafor
LG Sow
C Andrews / Leverett
RG Robinson
RT Onwenu

Once Strange comes back evaluate where you're at with guard play. If Sow and/or Robinson is playing poorly you swap him in, otherwise keep him as a backup and try to have him learn to snap in practice.

At LT, hopefully someone can give you passable play. Ideally Wallace/Lowe/Okorafor in that order because of contract status/age. The goal wouldn't even be for anyone to "lock up" the spot, just not be so horrendous. High end hope would be that even though we still need a LT, they could justify passing on one again next year if the draft board isn't right for it. I just don't want them to be in a spot where they feel like they absolutely one million percent NEED to go LT with the 1st next year and they can't take a higher rated player at another spot or trade down for a haul of picks if there's a good offer.

Looking at next year's free agency (Top 50 NFL free agents in 2025: Dak Prescott is the headliner, but receivers and edge rushers abound) it does feel like LT could maybe be a little better. For comparison, Tyron Smith is listed at #48 overall here and the 6th OT overall. He was the #1 OT this year in free agency. We'll see what happens with extensions and all, but I have some optimism that next year maybe they'll be able to get a stop gap player. I also assume they'll be more willing to bite the bullet and overpay guys next year vs. only spending on option A guys like this year and just rolling with what we have when they miss out.

Two straight practices with Onwenu at tackle.

If everyone stays healthy, and they get some play from anyone at LT, this could be an NFL unit.

Then next year, make the first two picks tackles.

Just like last year it’s probably smarter to have Layden Robinson squeeze between two vets than have Wallace alone on the end… or maybe they want Wallace to take Okorafor’s spot as well.

If Robinson is a player, they have four NFL caliber offensive linemen, even if they are not all at their ideal positions.

LT is likely "play the hot hand."

Any solution shouldn't be any answer.

We’ll see… Robinson looked good against lesser competitors. Rookies often have growing pains. Anything is better than Lowe by default.
