Eugene Wilson

Happy 44th birthday to Eugene Wilson
Born Aug 17, 1980 in Maywood, Illinois
Patriot FS, 2003-2007; uniform #26

Pats 2nd round (36th overall) selection of the 2003 draft, from Illinois

Eugene Wilson was a starter as a rookie, replacing Tebucky Jones at safety. He had four interceptions that season, and a pair of pass deflections in the Super Bowl victory over Carolina before being suffering a groin injury. The absence of Wilson and Rodney Harrison was a key (but often overlooked) factor in how Carolina was able to come back and rack up points late in that game.

11/20/2005: Eugene Wilson holds up the ball after an in interception
in the final seconds of a game against the Saints.

The following season Wilson again had four picks, plus two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. He drew the ire of Tony Dungy on a hard hit on Reggie Wayne, with St Tony incorrectly ranting to officials that the play should have drawn a penalty. Dungy, Bill Polian and their friends on the Competition Committee would proceed to institute rule changes and 'points of emphasis' that would hurt aggressive defenders like Wilson and Harrison, and benefit indoor pass-heavy offenses such as their own Colts.

Eugene Wilson lays a massive hit on Colt WR Reggie Wayne,
preventing him from catching a fourth-quarter pass during the AFC Championship.

In the AFCCG Wilson intercepted Ben Roethlisberger twice and broke up another of Ben's passes, as the Patriots defeated Pittsburgh 41-27. Wilson had four tackles and two passes defensed in Super Bowl 39, but had to leave that championship game as well when he injured his right shoulder on a kickoff return with 1:03 left to play in the first half.

12/16/2007: Eugene Wilson (26) celebrates a pick-six off Kellen Clemens with Asante Samuel; the play gave the Pats a 7-0 lead.
The Patriots would go on to defeat the Jets 20-10 and improve to 14-0; Eric Mangini's Jets dropped to 3-11.

Eugene Wilson played in 62 games for the Patriots over five seasons with the Patriots. He had ten interceptions (one pick-six), 28 passes defensed, four fumble recoveries and 251 tackles. He also played in ten playoff games and earned two Super Bowl rings. After retiring from the NFL he kept a low profile, possibly due to the way his name was used in headlines when his father got himself in trouble.

Jan 12, 2012:

Eugene Wilson's son, Eugene 'Tre' Wilson III is a very good wide receiver for the Florida Gators.

Zefross Moss

Happy 58th birthday to Zefross Moss
Born Aug 17, 1966 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama
Patriot RT, 1997-1999; uniform #77
Signed as a free agent on March 31, 1997

Zefross Moss had spent six seasons with the Colts and two with Detroit before joining the Pats in '97. The Pats had let 35-year old LG William Roberts go, and moved RT Max Lane to fill Roberts' position. Moss was four years younger (31), and came in to spend the next three seasons as the team's starter at right tackle under Pete Carroll.

Over an 11-season career Moss played in 154 games with 137 starts, plus four playoff games. He played in 42 games regular season games and three postseason games with the Patriots, all starts at right tackle. He was released on March 23, 2000, nine weeks after the team hired Bill Belichick as their new head coach, and two weeks ahead of the 2000 draft. Greg Randall was selected in the fourth round to be his potential replacement, though the job ended up going to former Seahawk Grant Williams instead.

August 31, 1997:
There are those who are worried about the offensive line. But it's anchored by Bruce Armstrong, a five-time Pro Bowler, at left tackle; and 330-pound Zefross Moss, who can open similarly massive holes, at right tackle.

Greg Scruggs

Happy 34th birthday to Greg Scruggs
Born Aug 17, 1990 in Cincinnati
Patriot TE, 2016; uniform #83
Signed as a free agent on Oct 1, 2016

Oct 5, 2016: TE Greg Scruggs catches a pass in between practice team members
Devin Lucien, left, and Glenn Gronkowski during practice in Foxboro.

Greg Scruggs was a late (232nd overall) draft pick by Seattle in 2012; he was with the Seahawks until 2014, and then the Bears for two seasons - where he was converted from DE to TE. In late September of 2016 the Pats signed (and quickly waived) defensive tackles Anthony Johnson, and then John Hughes. That opened a roster spot for Scruggs, who was signed on October 1. Scruggs was on the game-day inactive list for two weeks, then placed on season ending IR due to a knee injury. He received a ring for Super Bowl LI versus Atlanta, but never played in the NFL again.

Soon after Scruggs was hired by the University of Cincinnati as their director of player development (2018-19) and then as the Bearcats' fefensive line coach (2020-21). Scruggs worked as an assistant defensive line coach with the New York Jets for one season, and in 2023 he was hired by the University of Wisconsin to be their defensive line coach. He has also worked for Boys Hope Girls Hope of Cincinnati, a charity helping youths who want to go to college rise up from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Oct 1, 2016:
- At 6-foot-3 and 277 pounds, he is considered a strong blocker. He fits the profile of injured tight end Michael Williams, a bigger player at the position who was known more for his blocking than pass-catching skills.

- Out of Louisville, he entered the NFL as a seventh-round draft choice of the Seahawks.

- Scruggs played defensive end his first four seasons in the NFL before making the switch to tight end with the Bears this year.

- He had played in all three games for the Bears this season and was released Sept. 27. Scruggs played a total of eight offensive snaps and 17 special-teams snaps in those games. He didn't register an official statistic. Scruggs has played in 18 career NFL games.

- As a member of the Bears, the Patriots got a closer look at him during three joint practices in August. Scruggs attempted to play the role of peacemaker during a Malcolm Butler/Alshon Jeffery scuffle in which both Butler and Jeffery were ejected from practice.

Oct 5, 2016:

Oct 7, 2016:
His story: At 6-foot-3, 277 pounds, he is a converted defensive end who is still relatively new to the offensive side of the ball. As a member of the Bears, Scruggs made the switch in the spring. He made the initial 53-man roster along with Zach Miller and Logan Paulsen. On Sept. 27, Scruggs was cut by Chicago. He signed with the Pats less than a week later.

Like other new acquisitions, Scruggs is playing catchup. He lives in the Patriot Place Renaissance Inn, a five-minute walk from the stadium. And he finally has a key card to access the facility whenever he wants.

"I'm usually here a lot earlier than people, so I kind of had to sit at the front and wait for someone to come help me in," Scruggs said. "I think it was Sebastian (Vollmer), so that was pretty cool."

How does Scruggs fit in New England?

If he sticks, he figures to serve as a blocking specialist alongside versatile tight ends Rob Gronkowski, Martellus Bennett, and AJ Derby. He could fill a role in the team's heavy jumbo set, which features three tight ends.

Last year's big tight end, Michael Williams, played 40 percent of the team's offensive snaps. Williams suffered a torn ACL during minicamp.

Scruggs is new to the Pats, but he does have some familiarity with the roster. He intervened in the Malcolm Butler-Alshon Jeffery dustup during the Patriots-Bears joint practices, playing the role of peacemaker. He was a member of the Seahawks from 2012-15, but did not play in Super Bowl XLIX against the Patriots.

July 10, 2018:
Greg Scruggs is back home.

The 27-year-old Scruggs, a former St. Xavier High School star and NFL player, recently joined the University of Cincinnati football staff as Director of Player Development. A journey that began in his high school band and morphed into two Super Bowl championship rings certainly has not been your standard life story.

"I’m back where it all began," Scruggs said. "I'm so happy to be at the university and so happy to be back in Cincinnati. This is nostalgic for me, to be able to go see and do places that as a 17-year old it was hard to appreciate."

At St. Xavier, Scruggs spent three years in the school marching band before joining the football team. St. Xavier football coaches had tried to get Scruggs to come out and finally succeeded, and Scruggs became an immediate standout as a defensive lineman. Scruggs had nine sacks and 57 tackles for the Bombers' 2007 Ohio Division I state championship team.

Scruggs then played at the University of Louisville and became a seventh-round draftee by the Seattle Seahawks in 2012. Scruggs played in the NFL from 2012-16 with Seattle, Chicago and New England, and he won Super Bowl title rings with both Seattle and New England.

Feb 23, 2023:

March 21, 2024:
On March 7, Michigan announced the hiring of Scruggs, who coached defensive line last season at Wisconsin and served as assistant defensive line coach for the New York Jets in 2022. He replaced Mike Elston, one of several Michigan assistants to follow coach Jim Harbaugh to the Los Angeles Chargers.

According to an Ann Arbor police report, Scruggs was stopped around 2:15 a.m. on March 16 after an officer observed his car stopped in an intersection with the hazard lights on. Scruggs, 33, told officers that he had been at two Ann Arbor restaurants but only had two drinks. He also told the officers he was tired from working late and that he didn't know the area well.

The 33-year-old went through field sobriety tests and was then arrested.

Scruggs took two tests at the police station and registered blood-alcohol levels of .16 and .17, double the legal limit in Michigan. He was suspended by the program following the arrest.

More August 17 Birthdays

Happy 32nd birthday to Brock Vereen
Born Aug 17,1992 in Valencia, California
Patriot safety, 2015-2016; uniform #25
Signed to the practice squad on Nov 18, 2015

Shane's younger brother was originally a fourth round pick by the Bears in 2014. The Pats signed him to their practice squad on November 18, 2015; he was waived during the 2016 training camp.

Aug 16, 2016:
Vereen, 23, was signed by the Patriots to the practice squad on Nov. 18, 2015. The 5-foot-11, 200-pounder, originally entered the NFL as a fourth-round (131st overall) draft choice by the Chicago Bears in the 2014 NFL Draft out of Minnesota. He played in all 16 games with four starts for the Bears in his rookie season and totaled 38 tackles, one interception and one forced fumble. Vereen appeared in three games as a reserve for Chicago last season before being released on Sept. 29. Vereen joined the Minnesota practice squad on Oct. 1 and was released on Nov. 13.

Happy 43rd birthday to Chas Gessner
Born Aug 17, 1981 in DC
Patriot WR, 2003; uniform #18
Signed as an undrafted rookie on May 2, 2003

A 6'4 receiver, Chas Gessner was an All-American in both football and lacrosse at Brown University. The Pats allocated him to Berlin in NFL Europe - and four months after Super Bowl 38 (for which he would receive a ring), Gessner was part of the Berlin Thunder winning the World Bowl championship. He later signed with the Jets, Bucs and Seahawks, and played a few years of Arena Football. Gessner is the CEO and founder of Vitality RX, a southern California men's health program.

June 28, 2004:
"It was pretty wild," Gessner said recently after a workout at Gillette Stadium following his return from Germany. "I couldn't have written it any better. I got a chance to be on two unbelievable teams this year and it was good to be able to work with great coaches over there. We had a great group of guys and everybody came together pretty fast. It was a good opportunity to be a part of another winning team."

The 6-4, 215-pound former Brown University star ranked in the top ten in NFLEL in touchdowns, receptions and receiving yards for the Thunder. He finished the spring with 38 catches for 566 yards and six touchdowns as one of quarterback Rohan Davey's favorite targets.

"I'd say I am a big, physical receiver," Gessner said. "I think I could help in the red zone. I think I create a little bit of an advantage matchup wise, maybe, in the slot or what have you against maybe a linebacker or a safety. I think I have some intangibles. I can block real well. I can run the inside routes, come across the middle, things like that. I think I have a big advantage in size. I am a big target for the quarterbacks, which might be a little mix up in terms of our other receivers that are smaller and quicker. So I think that might be what I bring to the table."

Gessner will also try to avoid playing the mental G.M. game as he battles with guys like J.J. Stokes, P.K. Sam, David Patten and others for the final one or two wide receiver spots.

"It's amazing," Gessner said of the Patriots Super Bowl ring. "It's the most ridiculous thing that I have ever seen. I almost passed out when I saw it, I really did.

August 17 Pats Games

Aug 17, 2019:

It wasn’t as clean as last week, the Titans have a lot of depth, like the Patriots and this one wasn’t nearly the blowout that the opening week was. But in the end, the younger players that the Patriots have brought in were the difference in the win. The Patriots overcame a 17-8 halftime deficit enroute to a 22-17 win over Tennessee.

With a quick turnaround and the third preseason game on Thursday night with Carolina, nearly all of the starters sat this one out. Tom Brady, was a cheerleader on the sidelines for Brian Hoyer and rookie Jarrett Stidham.

The Patriots were really sloppy on the penalty front, getting flagged 12 times, while the Titans had 10, a total of 22 accepted penalties. One of those flags cost the Patriots two points. Stidham came in for Brian Hoyer after the Titans downed a punt at the two-yard line. Lance Kendricks was called for hold in the end zone.

Brian Hoyer- a rough night for the veteran back up. He got absolutely hammered a few times and was slow to get up. He also threw a pick on the Patriots first series.

Jarrett Stidham – He got away with a couple of early throws that could have been intercepted for pick-sixes. But he settled in and played well, completing 14 of 19 passes for 193 yards and a touchdown.

He led two long scoring drives in the second half 81 yards in 10 plays and 99 yards in 11 plays capping off the game-winning drive with a nice 23-yard touchdown pass to Damoun Patterson.

Damien Harris – We’ve been singing his praises since the NFL Draft and in his first preseason action, the rookie running back from Alabama looked very good. He rushed 14 times for 80 yards and caught five passes for 23 yards.

Harris is a patient runner who follows his blocks, makes one cut and goes. He’s tough after contact and runs with his pad level low and made the most of his opportunities.

Isaiah WynnLadies and gents, there’s your left tackle. Wynn looked very solid, if not outstanding in his debut. There has been so much speculation and worrying about his availability and the Patriots have been taking it cautiously with him. But he looked and moved really well. Big exhale, he’s fine.

Chase Winovich – The rookie from Michigan who plays like his hair is on fire, had another really solid outing. After Derek Rivers and Shalique Calhoun went down with injuries, he stepped up. He had a sack, a QB hit, two tackles for a loss and drew a holding penalty by the end of the first half. His motor and solid play is going to make him a fan favorite this season.

Jakobi Meyers – Was the best wide receiver on the Patriots side by a very, very wide margin. This kid gets better every time he hits the field. He was targeted six times and made six catches for 82 yards and a two-point conversion from Hoyer. Slow 40 time? The kid can flat out play and catch the ball.

Joejuan Williams – The rookie corner had another really solid game. He struggled early in camp but those days seem long ago and far away. Titans QBs were 0-3 when throwing at him as he had two pass breakups. He looks like he’s gaining confidence daily out there and with his size and physicality, can be a great matchup piece.

Byron Cowart – the rookie DL from Maryland set the tone early. On the second snap of the game, he undressed veteran Roger Saffold and planted Marcus Mariots for a sack. Calvin Munson and Shalique Calhoun were also active out there again.

Some things need cleaning up: The backup safeties and linebackers weren’t covering the Titans tight ends well early in this one. They cleaned it up a bit later but the coaches will have something to say on that. Obi Melifonwu seemed late to react to an inside move by Delanie Walker and was easily beat for a touchdown.

Penalties – The Patriots were getting flagged a lot especially in the first half, this will be a big issue with the coaches after they look at the film.

- Marcus Mariota sacrifices his body
- Ryan Tannehill solid, too
- Defensive standouts
It didn’t take long for Logan Ryan to have an impact on Saturday’s game. Two plays for the Patriots, in fact.
That’s when the veteran cornerback undercut a route by Braxton Berries for an interception of Patriots quarterback Brian Hoyer, who got the start ahead of 42-year-old Tom Brady.

Jarrett Stidham threw a 23-yard touchdown pass to Damoun Patterson with 4:12 left, rallying the New England Patriots to a 22-17 victory over the Tennessee Titans on Saturday night.

Stidham picked up where he left off in his previous trip to Nissan Stadium. Stidham had five TD passes here helping Auburn rout Purdue in the Music City Bowl last December, and this time the rookie was 14 of 19 for 193 yards helping the Patriots (2-0) come back from a 17-8 halftime deficit.

Rising: LT Isaiah Wynn, DE Chase Winovich, RB Damien Harris
Falling: CB J.C. Jackson, K Stephen Gostkowski, OL Hjalte Froholdt

August 17, 2008:

Review from the great, late Box_O_Rocks:
KO: Touchback. Lot's of kids getting a test drive on the coverage team: Slater, Ventrone, Crable, Green-Ellis, Bo Ruud. Vets I saw: Morris, Izzo, Alexander, Jimoh.

1st defensive series.

1st and 10: Pats base 3-4. Bucs run a FB lead up the middle, Vince was doubled, Tedy plugs up the FB and Mayo fills behind Vince, but Ty pursuing the play gets sealed inside by the RT, which allows the RB bouncing off the plug to find a new rush lane. Vrabes pursuing down the line, throws the TE off and turns the RB back inside where Vince fighting back off the double-team trips the RB just before Spann wraps him high to finish the play. 6 yds.

2nd and 4: Pats base 3-4. Bucs run another FB lead at LT. Sey and Vince are driven off the line 3 yds. Woods sets the edge on the FB, turning the play inside where Vince fights through the Center's block to grab the RB's ankles, Ty cleans up. 3 yds.

3rd and 1: Pats base 3-4. Bucs play fake into the line and run an end-around from the slot. I'm not sure who has what call, but someone in the secondary should have been yelling to watch the slot receiver's reverse - Meriweather was deep center field and seemed really slow to react to the reverse. Woods was sealed by a nice block by the FB, he was fooled by the fake inside the same as everyone else, if anything he was the first to read it, but a nice bounce outside by the FB off the play fake set up the seal block. 16 yds.

1st and 10: Pats base 3-4. Bucs run a FB lead behind RG. Sey is doubled on the backside. Vince is moved left by the C. Ty gets tripled by the RT/TE/FB, leaving Bru free to burrow through the pile-up for the tackle. 3 yds.

2nd and 7: Pats base 3-4. Bucs keep 6 in to block 4, Griese fired that pass right on 3-mississippi. The FB ran a 2 yd Out to the flat, picking up 2 yds after the catch. Woods in a zone, made up ground quickly to hold him to a 5 yd gain.

3rd and 3: Pats base 3-4. Bucs WR runs a 4yd stop (or smash route as Sterling motormush calls it) along the sideline for the first. Hobbs was outside zone over the WR and under the slot receiver with Meriweather deep half. Woods was over the slot receiver, walled him outside, jammed him, and set-up in a short zone - looked good. The Bucs kept 5 in to block 3, with a 6th chipping Ty before releasing.

1st and 10: Pats base 3-4. Bucs send 5 into the pattern, Griese hits the LRB on an Out. Mayo makes up ground quickly to limit YAC. I think a case can be made for a hold on Seymour - oh well. 7 yds.

2nd and 3: Pats base 3-4. Bucs run it behind the right side. Ty, Vrabes, and Tedy run a stunt (backed up by Spann) with Ty driving the RT outside to create an edge, Tedy slanting outside to pull the RG outside, and Vrabes filling behind them. He met the RB 2 yds deep in the backfield, but got juked out of his socks. Spann was there to turn the RB back inside at the LOS and make the tackle as the RB fell forward for the 1st. Nice effort by the foursome.

1st and 10: Pats base 3-4. Bucs set up for a FB lead inside, I'm not sure if this was a designed play or a QB/WR read, but the LWR runs a 6 yd stop and Griese turns inside as if to hand-off then turns back and hits him. Hobbs comes up quick and drags him down. Hobbs was 8 yds off the LOS playing soft - Meriweather was almost in the box on that side so my guess is a QB/WR read to take advantage of Hobbs needing to play deep to keep the play in front of him. 8 yds.

2nd and 2: Pats base 3-4. Ty stoned the RT while Bru and Mayo plugged inside forcing the RB to go outside, where Vrabel knocked 81 on his can - the kid's either a small TE or large WR and he stood no chance. Vrabes got the first hit on the RB, but Ty joined him to help spin down the RB. No gain.

3rd and 2: Pats 3-3 Nickel, Woods/Bru out, Alexander/Lynch in. Bucs in shotgun. Griese looks deep and dumps off a low ball to Hilliard just across the line to gain.

1st and 10: Pats base 3-4. Bucs keep 7 in to block 3. RB flares into the flat at the LOS, Vrabes forces him out after 3 yds.

2nd and 7: Pats base 3-4. Pats front 7 was owned by the Bucs, one-on-one blocking gave the RB his lane behind RG (right at Mayo) forcing Meriweather to make the stop at the line to gain. 7 yds.

1st and 10: Pats base 3-4. Bucs run it inside at LG, Vrabes scoots behind the line to make the tackle. 2 yds.

Meriweather limps off with the trainers. Lynch in.

2nd and 8: Pats base 3-4. Bucs kept 6 to block 4. Tedy stunted inside with Vince and pulled three blockers to give Vince a shot at the QB. Dump-off underneath for 5, Vrabes and Spann on the stop.

Lynch out, Dillard in.

3rd and 3: Pats base 3-4. Quick slant to the 1.

1st and goal: Pats in goal line set. Bucs punch it in.

Post Mortem:
- The Bucs Center has a "#75 is my wench" tattoo.
- Spann played well.
- Woods & Meriweather played decently.
- Bryant was challenged once on a 2 yd low and away pitch.
- Hobbs appeared to be the security blanket on the side with Woods, Meriweather, and Mayo.
- Mayo is still reading and slow reacting, but his speed makes a difference - he needs to add strength.

August 17, 2007:

Vince Young might have been better off staying home again.

After being benched for Tennessee's exhibition opener for spending the previous night at his house instead of the team hotel, Young was sacked four times last night. He also was tackled just short of the goal line on his final play in the Titans' 27-24 win over New England.

Young completed five of 17 passes for 102 yards and ran four times for 9 yards. Last season's offensive Rookie of the Year played the entire first half before Kerry Collins started the third quarter.

New England quarterback Tom Brady also took his lumps but finished with respectable numbers — 10-for-19 for 145 yards, a 28-yard touchdown pass to Wes Welker and two interceptions. He played seven series before Matt Cassel took over late in the first half.

Brady was knocked hard to the ground on two passes that turned into interceptions and was slow getting up both times.

I don't know if the amount of effort you put into these is worth the squeeze but I do know I usually learn something when I take the time to go through them so thanks.

Today I learned There another Eugene Wilson to keep an eye on.

Yeah, it is incredibly time consuming - even with the benefit of copying and pasting a thread that lands on a date when I have done this exercise previously. There are always plenty of broken links, deleted photos, profiles in need of updates, new players to add, etc.

And that's before going down internet rabbit holes on finding new information. Eugene Wilson III is one of many examples.

I'll probably cut it down to either only one or two profiles/comments per day, or only one or two threads per week sometime soon. It's difficult to find the time to crank these out each and every day. More so now that we have some football to watch.

Personally my favorite part is finding out what these players have done post-NFL. A lot of fascinating stories. Then there is also new info (at least to me) such as the somewhat bitter ending between Ben Coates and the Pats. Learn something new every day.

And you are correct, there is certainly a limited appeal in terms of how many will ever read these threads, versus the amount of time spent compiling them. I guess I do it for my own entertainment if nothing else.

Thanks for the feedback, glad somebody enjoys them.

glad somebody enjoys them.
He's not the only one who enjoys these threads.

They are, hands down, the best threads on the boards.

I enjoy going thru my cache of pics to see if I have photos of these guys... Not really the big name players, but the older and/or lesser known guys... I have about 15 different folders, 2500 or so images stored, and its amazing how many guys that I don't have pics of... some are impossible to get, but when you do find them, its awesome...

one of my favorite gets is Doug Dumler... was thrilled when the hours (not kidding, hours spent) when I came across it... Most are going to just pass over it... thats cool, just a role player from the 70's... but its part of the Team History, and there are some who enjoy that aspect of the Patriots...

So at least on my part, Love these threads

He's not the only one who enjoys these threads.

They are, hands down, the best threads on the boards.

Thank you for the kind words, Pape.

A few years ago you said there was a "white whale", a former Pats player that you had searched and searched for, but could find no photograph of, and you asked me if I ever found him. Was that Dumler?

I also recall your search for another player culminated in a find of a photo on Getty Images - but he was never part of the US version of Getty; it was only available on a foreign version. I thought that was rather odd.

This last week I was looking for a photo of somebody and I kept getting hits on google for that player (I forget who), but whenever I clicked on those Getty links there was no picture that matched the preview of him in a Pats uniform - nor any other photo of him in a Pats uniform in the gallery. That was both strange and frustrating.

You remember that - yeah it was indeed Doug Dumler... I dunno why, but I wanted a pic of this guy... maybe he was one of the first "hard to find" players that I could only find in short clips of youtube...

and that has happened to me too - the pic is there for a preview, but not on the site database anymore... I try to open that image directly, some times it works, sometimes it doesn't... Chas Gessner was one of those guys
