10/12 Super Bowls have featured a QB on a rookie deal. If Maye is ever going to lead us back to the Super Bowl the best chance of it is being in the next 5 years. I don't buy the idea that it's "too early" to go for a #1 WR. It's all about maximizing talent during that window. Set him up as best you can to grow into success early.

That doesn't mean do something stupid like give up our 1st next year. But if you can get him for our 2nd, Bourne and maybe another 3rd or 4th rounder whatever, I think it'd be just as stupid not to explore it.

I know we still need a LT, but we'll still have all of our future 1sts if we get Aiyuk without giving one up and we'll still have tons of cap space. We'll still project to be bad next year and pick pretty high. Trading for Aiyuk is not "instead of" getting a LT. You still have resources for that (and more).

I like what I've read about Polk/Baker/Douglas. Maybe they can be a great WR trio someday. If they're a great 1/2/3 then they'd be an even better 2/3/4. Maybe one of them ends up better than Aiyuk? Even better!!! More good WRs is better, not worse.

This dudes crazy
Not really....it is the reality of the WR market coupled with the cap rising every year....besides the NFL looks like it won the Sunday Ticket case..so the cap won't be dropping any time soon....

14 catches (on 25 targets), 242 yards. The 17.3 yards/catch was right in line with his season average (17.89). It's 81 yards/game compared to his season average of 84, so right in line.

The only noticeable drop off was in catch% where he fell to 56%. So that'd be something to watch for. But the production was maintained overall.
Thanks, that’s good to know.

The contracts are basically equal
He’s not giving up money, he had a price and several teams meet it and now he’s trying to choose where he wants to play
Yes, the Patriots could be stupid and go above is actual value but that would make no sense
It will probably come down to playing in his preferred spot for a bit less money or going to NE and being one of the highest paid in the league. Assuming Pittsburgh will actually meet SF’s trade requirements.

Getting the respect and the money being a top paid WR, maybe even THE top paid, might be too hard to pass up. He may also be mulling over if his other options are really so bad.

No, we don't know anything about contract talks. Several teams agreed with the 49ers on trade compensation, not with Aiyuk on contract details. I'm not surprised it is taking a long time, because the contract agreement is by far the most complicated part of all this.

I don’t want to overpay someone to come here vs ****zburgh

Just because they have the money, which Kraft just refused to spend, doesn’t mean any way of spending is smart.
This team has a ton of needs. Largely ignoring free agency in order to basically sign a free agent and give up compensation too isn’t the way to build a team.

People say that Kraft refused to spend, but there are no evidence of that. Fact is there weren't a lot good young, players available in free agency. Most of the top players were older and will be past their prime by the time the Patriots are contenders again. Aiyuk doesn't fall into that category.

My guess is next year, assuming they think Maye is ready to make an impact, that the Pats will spend more in free agency.

I don't have a problem giving up cap space OR a pick for a good player. It's giving up BOTH that is meh for me. We need to add a lot of elite talent if we're going to get back to competing. The best avenue(s) to do so are drafting and signing players. Signing a FA only costs money. Drafting someone only costs the pick you use. Trading for someone and giving out a big extension costs both. It's a bigger chunk out of our resource pool, is my point. It's a pick you can't use on someone else AND money you can't spend on someone else.

At this stage of a rebuild, I don't like double paying because the roster is such a blank slate. We don't have an all pro on the roster and arguably we don't have anyone who ever will be. We need as many bites at the apple as we can get. But like I said, I'm ok with it on Aiyuk (to a point) because of how I think he can aid the QB development piece.

As of right now, the Patriots will have about $135 million of cap space next year. It will be less by next year rolls around, but it will be over $100 million. Cap is not a concern for the Patriots. They have locked up all their young players they want to keep.

And because so many teams are flushed with cap space, free agency is a bit of a dud. I mean who were the big signings in free agency that were players going to a new team? The only true impact player that went to a new team not via trade was Danielle Hunter (and it was a bit of a fluke he was available) and Kirk Cousins (another fluke that a franchise QB is available in free agency). There were some older players who signed one or two year deals. I mean the Pats were in a bidding war over Ridley, who as the best WR available and is a mid tier #1 WR.

There were some good young players on defense who are more complimentary players than true impact players. But you really cannot build through free agency anymore.

“Things that will never happen” for $1,000 Alex.

Why would Kyle Shanahan sign off on such an incongruous strategy? Quite simply, according to multiple sources, the head coach is bothered by Aiyuk’s behavior, from the receiver’s conspicuous “bro hugs” to his perceived brooding, and willing to move on.
That sounds like our new culture.
As long as the bro hugs or really just bro hugs no Diddy.

It’s a pretty nice city actually.

There are some affluent areas in the greater Pittsburgh area that are quite nice.

Downtown Pittsburgh really is also a nice place….if you enjoy getting stabbed and/or carjacked.

Young, single AA athletes with money to burn never hang out in the downtown areas of large citiesp, though, amirite? They prefer to Netflix and chill with their Boos.
Also:

Pittsburghers were among the cities where people bathe the least.

Pittsburgh has a high maternal mortality rate for Black women and a high rate of homicide for Black men. The study concluded that “Black adult mortality rates are higher in Pittsburgh than in 98 percent of similar cities.

I am not the biggest fan of PFF, but I figured I would post this anyway.
