Who else thought Tom was not only going to eventually be cut when drafted and just a feel good story in 2001?
At the time I didn't understand why the Patriots would draft a QB, even in that late, when they already had Drew Bledsoe and a couple of seemingly competent backups. Just seemed like a complete waste of a draft pick to me.

But then I also recall an old friend of mine telling me that he thought this Brady kid looked really good in training camp.

I know @PatsWickedPissah and some others used to go to Bryant to watch training camp practices - perhaps they can weigh in with any recollections?

Happy 38th birthday to Landon Cohen
Born August 3, 1986 in Spartanburg, SC
Patriot DT, 2010-2011; uniform #66 & #65
Signed as a free agent on December 22, 2010

Landon Cohen was a seventh round draft pick by Detroit in 2008, from Ohio University. He played in twenty games over two seasons for the Lions with five starts before being waived as part of final roster cuts in 2010. The Jaguars claimed him off waivers and Cohen played in a couple games before suffering a knee injury, and was eventually waived again. Late in the season the Pats signed Cohen and he played in the final two games of the season, starting one and recording three tackles. Cohen was waived as part of final roster cuts at the end of training camp on September 3, 2011. He was re-signed by the Pats on September 21, but was waived again on September 27.

Cohen's career with the Patriots consists of three games played with one start, and four solo tackles. He later spent time with several other teams (see below), finishing up with games played (9 starts); 48 tackles (32 solo), 6 tackles for a loss, 2 QB hits and one forced fumble. Landon also played in three postseason games (one with Patriots, the 2010 28-21 loss to the Jets). Cohen was with Seattle for the Pats 28-24 Super Bowl 49 victory over the Seahawks.

Happy 33rd birthday to Henry Anderson
Born August 3, 1991 in Atlanta
Patriot DE, 2021; uniform #94
Signed as a free agent on March 19, 2021

Henry Anderson played in four games for the Patriots in 2021, recording three tackles. He was on the field for 35 defensive snaps and 28 special team snaps. Anderson played in 89 NFL games from 2015 to 2022, with 188 tackles, 11.5 sacks, 45 quarterback hits and 26 tackles for a loss.

March 15, 2021:
Patriots sign defensive tackle Henry Anderson to a two-year, $7 million contract.

The Patriots rounded out a busy opening Monday of the tampering period by making another reported addition to their defensive line in veteran Henry Anderson. The six-year vet had been released earlier this month by the Jets and is the fourth defensive line signing of the day, including Davon Godchaux, Deatrich Wise and Carl Davis, not to mention outside linebacker Matt Judon.

Anderson maxed out with seven sacks in 2018, but saw a decline in production over the last two seasons after signing an extension with New York. The big defensive lineman is a good fit for the Patriots' defensive scheme, where he will undoubtedly be moved around the line to exploit favorable matchups. His size and length are considerable assets and Anderson has experience doing the dirty work in the trenches.

In one day, the Patriots have made concerted efforts to reinforce their defensive front, adding multiple 300-plus pound NFL veterans who should give 2020's 26th-ranked run defense a whole new look and a lot more beef.

The New England Patriots had a busy start to free agency’s unofficial opening, and they added yet another player late on Monday: Former New York Jets defensive end Henry Anderson.

The Patriots also added Davon Godchaux and brought back Deatrich Wise and Carl Davis to shore up their defensive line, as well as outside linebacker Matt Judon.

The Jets cut Anderson earlier this month. They signed him to a three-year, $25 million deal in 2019 after a career year in which he recorded seven sacks, but he’s struggled since — managing just one sack in 2019 and half a sack in 2020. Cutting him freed up more than $8 million in cap space for New York.

Anderson played in all but three games over the last three seasons. His size, length, and experience are all expected to be assets for the Patriots.

Bill Belichick and the Patriots also signed defensive back Jalen Mills and tight end Jonnu Smith. They lost guard Joe Thuney to the Kansas City Chiefs on a five-year deal.

April 18, 2021:

June 1, 2021:

Sept 1, 2022:
Defensive lineman Henry Anderson was released from injured reserve after reaching an injury settlement with the New England Patriots.

The team announced the news on Thursday.

Anderson wouldn’t have been able to return to play for the Patriots this season due to being placed on IR ahead of the 53-man roster cut. So the 31-year-old defensive veteran was looking at a long layoff if the two sides didn’t reach a settlement.

Now, he is free to sign elsewhere and work towards contributing for another team.

The Patriots are seemingly undergoing a shift in mentality with their being a youth movement on the defensive side of the ball. Coach Bill Belichick has clearly made a conscientious effort to rely on younger and more athletic defensive players up front and in the backfield.

Along with releasing Anderson from IR, the team also officially moved rookie Tyquan Thornton to IR and signed former college standout Lynn Bowden Jr. to the practice squad in what has been a busy day in Foxborough.

The New England Patriots couldn't keep Henry Anderson on injured reserve for very long.

Just two days after placing him on season-ending injured reserve, the Patriots released Anderson amid a triad of moves.

Anderson, 31, arrived to New England via a two-year contract ahead of the 2021-22 season. Despite there being initial optimism he could become a contributor for Bill Belichick's defense, Anderson's career with the Patriots involved more procedural moves than games played. The veteran suffered a season-ending pectoral injury four games in 2021 before being placed on IR. He would then rework his contract with New England prior to this season before again being placed on IR and eventually released Thursday.

Though he started to pop during the latter half of training camp, Anderson was unable to beat out the likes of Carl Davis and rookies Sam Roberts and DaMarcus Mitchell for one of the final defensive line spots on New England's roster. That mixed with an undisclosed injury sealed his fate in being placed on injured reserve before eventually being cut loose.

Roster moves will likely continue to roll in for the Patriots as they find the 53 they'd like to take down to Miami for their series opener with the Dolphins at Hard Rock Stadium on Sept. 11.

Happy 42nd birthday to Vincent Fuller
Born August 3, 1982 in Baltimore
Patriot safety, 2011; uniform #28
Signed as a free agent on December 21, 2011

From 2005 to 2011 Vince Fuller played in 76 NFL games, all but one with the Tennessee Titans. He had six interceptions - four of which were brought back for a pick-six. If you don't remember Vince Fuller being a member of the New England Patriots, there is a good reason for that.

- Dec 21, 2011: Patriots sign Fuller; he takes one of the roster spots vacated by DL Eric Moore (who was released the previous day) and DE Andre Carter (placed on injured reserve with a leg injury).

- Dec 23, 2011: Pats promote DB Sterling Moore and DE Alex Silvestro from the practice squad to the active roster; Fuller is released.

Reporters were able to get one interview in with Vince Fuller during his 48 hours with the New England Patriots

Dec 21, 2011:
Vincent Fuller, 29, is in his seventh NFL season after entering the NFL as a fourth round draft pick (108th overall) of the Tennessee Titans out of Virginia Tech in 2005. After being released by Tennessee on Sept. 3, 2011, Fuller signed with Detroit on Oct. 6 but injured his elbow in an Oct. 10 game vs. Chicago and was placed on injured reserve. He was taken off the injured reserve list when he was released by Detroit on Dec. 6.

Fuller, 6-1, 192 pounds, has played in 76 NFL games with five starts and has registered 163 total tackles and six interceptions with four of them returned for touchdowns.

Dec 22, 2011:
Fuller worked out for New England earlier this year and said that he remained hopeful that the organization would contact him after the Lions gave him an injury settlement.

The safety said there is few similarities between how the Tennessee Titans and Lions -- his last two stops -- operate and the system he’s now attempting to digest, but he’s starting to feel comfortable with some of the elements.

The coaching staff and other members of the secondary have been sticking by his side, helping him get up to speed, and Fuller remains confident that he’ll be able to contribute in some way.

“Hopefully I get it,” he said.

Fuller later attended the Fordham University School of Law and obtained his JD. Since 2017, he has worked for Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson, an international law firm headquartered in New York City, with more than 500 attorneys worldwide.

Happy 30th birthday to Younghoe Koo
Born August 3, 1994 in Seoul, South Korea
Patriot kicker, 2019 practice squad
Signed to the practice squad on October 4, 2019

Younghoe Koo's stay in Foxboro was longer than Vince Fuller's, but not by much. Koo was released eleven days after the Pats signed him.

Oct 3, 2019:
Koo, whose first name is pronounced “YOUNG-way”, acts as an insurance move for the Patriots, who placed Stephen Gostkowski on injured reserve Wednesday amid reports that he needs season-ending surgery. Nugent, 37, will be the guy for now. The Patriots mark Nugent’s eighth NFL team.

Oct 4, 2019:

Oct 15, 2019:
After Stephen Gostkowski was placed on injured reserve, the Patriots replaced him with not one but two kickers. The Patriots signed Mike Nugent to their 53-man roster and Younghoe Koo to their practice squad.

Koo, who was born in Seoul, South Korea, played on the Los Angeles Chargers in 2017. He most recently was a member of the AAF’s Atlanta Legends before the league folded. Koo went 14-of-14 on field goals.

Dec 26, 2020:
Koo's path to the NFL has always been unconventional. He moved to the United States with his mother as a sixth-grader and didn't speak any English when he first enrolled in school in Ridgewood, New Jersey, a short ride from New York City. At first, Koo gravitated toward the familiar -- kids who came from similar backgrounds, spoke fluent Korean and ate the same foods.

But his dad, Hyungseo Koo -- a business professor who stayed behind in Seoul but visited for a few months every year -- encouraged him to branch out so that he could learn English from his new classmates. In a predominantly white suburb (82% white, 2% Black and 13% Asian, according to the 2010 census), Koo bonded with the school's other minorities, many of whom played football (and helped Koo develop a slight Bronx accent while teaching him English pronunciations).

Koo grew up playing soccer, but one day in sixth grade, John Byon, a Korean American classmate, invited Koo to play football at recess. Byon told him to kick the ball to start off the game.

"I **** you not, it was straight out of 'The Sandlot.' Straight out of a sports movie," Byon told me in 2017. "The ball just flew over the field we were playing in and over the fence. It was like, 'Oh my god. You have to play football.'"

"I didn't know what kicking was," Koo says. "My parents didn't know what football was."

In 2020 Koo led the NFL with 37 successful field goal attempts, and made the Pro Bowl. He has been in the top ten in field goal percentage three times (2019-20-21) and in the top ten in field goals made as well (2020-22-23).

Oct 4, 2019: Patriots kickers Mike Nugent (2) and Younghoe Koo (8)

Happy 75th birthday to Steve Harkey
Born August 3, 1949 in Atlanta
Patriot running back, 1973 practice squad, '74 offseason
Claimed off waivers from the Jets on September 6, 1973

Steve Harkey had been selected by the Jets in the 16th round (396th overall) in the 1971 draft, from Georgia Tech. He bucked the long odds and made the team's roster, and played in 25 games in two seasons for the Jets, with 333 yards from scrimmage. In an early August Harkey suffered a concussion in a preseason game, and was waived as part of roster cuts. Harkey never got on the field with the Patriots, and was released in 1974.

Six pro football players born on August 3 with New England connections:

- Jeff Yeates, 73 (8/3/51)

- Trevor Pryce, 49 (8/3/75); the defensive lineman was a four-time Pro Bowler, playing in 187 games from 1997 to 2010, winning two super bowl rings early in his career with the Broncos.

- Todd Christensen (8/3/56-11/13/13); tight end was a major factor in two championship seasons for the Los Angeles Raiders. He twice led the NFL in receptions, and from '83 to '86 he had 349 receptions for 4,394 yards and 33 touchdowns.

- Todd Gurley, 30 (8/3/94); the running back was an All-Pro in 2017 when he led the league in rushing touchdowns (13) and yards from scrimmage (2,093), followed that up with another All-Pro season in 2018 when he led the NFL with 21 touchdowns - and like so many other great running backs, his career was abruptly over two years later.

- Walter Tin Kit Achiu (8/3/02-3/21/89); the Hawaiian tailback makes this list for his nickname: Sneeze Achiu.

Pats sign Roman Phifer, and other August 3rd News

Aug 3, 2024:

Aug 3, 2023:
The Patriots waived linebacker Terez Hall with an injury designation on Thursday. Hall has been missing from Patriots practice sessions...

The Patriots released veteran linebacker Terez Hall on Thursday, bringing an end to his latest stint in New England.

The decision to part ways with Hall reportedly came after he suffered an injury early in training camp, as Mike Reiss of ESPN noted it came with an injury designation. The 26-year-old collided with running back/wide receiver Ty Montgomery last week, with neither having practiced since.

Hall bounced around different designations by the Patriots, never quite carving out a role for himself on the active roster.

He was originally signed by New England as a rookie free agent in 2019 before spending the entire year on the practice squad. He returned to the practice squad in 2020, but was signed to the active roster and eventually played in eight games. The 2021 season would be a lost one, as he spent it on the reserve/physically unable to perform list before eventually making a return to the practice squad for the final three weeks of the 2022 season.

Aug 3, 2022:
The team is reportedly signing UDFA rookie linebacker Nate Wieland following a workout on Tuesday.

Wieland began his college career at Iowa before transferring to Grand View University. He was at rookie minicamp with New England in May.

The 6-foot-4, 234-pounder led Grand View on defense as the team’s middle linebacker in 2020 and 2021, picking up a team-high 70 tackles last season. He helped lead Grand View to a record of 14-1 and a berth in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) title game in 2021. Wieland earned All-American honors at the end of the season.

He is facing an uphill climb to crack the 53-man roster in Foxborough. Ja’Whaun Bentley, Anfernee Jennings, Matthew Judon, Harvey Langi, Cameron McGrone, Raekwon McMillan, Ronnie Perkins, Jahlani Tavai, Josh Uche and Mack Wilson are currently in the linebacker room.

Aug 3, 2018:
The new Patriots receiver is excited to be reunited with Josh McDaniels, who drafted him in Denver in 2010.

Eric Decker, 31, is a veteran of eight NFL seasons with the Denver Broncos (2010-13), New York Jets (2014-16) and Tennessee Titans (2017). The 6-foot-3, 214-pounder originally entered the NFL as a third-round draft pick (87th overall) of Denver out of Minnesota in the 2010 NFL Draft. He signed with the Jets as an unrestricted free agent in 2014. After three seasons with the Jets he was released in June of 2017 and spent last season with Tennessee. Last year with the Titans, Decker played in 16 games with eight starts and finished with 54 receptions for 563 yards with one touchdown. He played in both postseason games with one start and posted eight receptions for 106 yards and one touchdown.

During his eight NFL seasons, Decker has accumulated 439 receptions for 5,816 yards and 53 touchdowns in 111 games with 83 starts. He registered three 1,000-yard seasons with 1,064 receiving yards in 2012, 1,288 yards in 2013 and 1,027 yards in 2015. In addition, he has returned 25 kicks for 628 yards. Decker has also played in seven postseason games with six starts and tallied 22 receptions for 301 yards and one touchdown.

Aug 3, 2015:
The Patriots waived offensive lineman Kevin Hughes and defensive tackle Vince Taylor on Monday. Hughes was waived/injured, meaning he will revert to injured reserve if he’s not picked up by another team Tuesday. Hughes left Saturday’s practice early with what appeared to be a shoulder injury.

Taylor was waived with a failed physical designation. He was placed on the physically unable to perform list before camp began last Monday.

The Patriots cut cornerbacks Derek Cox and Justin Green and linebacker D.J. Lynch on Saturday. The team also claimed offensive lineman Harland Gunn off waivers from the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday.

Aug 3, 2014:
The New England Patriots have re-signed rookie LB James Morris. Morris was originally signed by the Patriots on May 16, 2014, as a rookie free agent out of Iowa and was released on May 20, 2014.

Morris, 22, was just the sixth player in Iowa history to record 400 career tackles after finishing with 400 tackles, 10½ sacks and six interceptions as a three-year starter. The 6-foot-2, 240-pounder was named a team captain in 2013 and started in all 13 games and finished second on the team with 107 total tackles, eight sacks and four interceptions.

Aug 3, 2013:
Offensive lineman Elvis Fisher, an undrafted rookie from the University of Missouri, and wide receiver Lavasier Tuinei, who was just signed on Thursday, were released by the team on Saturday.

Tuinei wasn’t present at Patriots practice on Saturday. Fisher was on the field for the scrimmage, but he was limited after spending much of Friday’s practice on the exercise bike.

The Patriots’ roster is now down to just 88 players as they prepare to travel to Philadelphia for some joint practices with the Eagles and their first preseason game next week.

Aug 3, 2011:
Patriots fans got some good news on Wednesday afternoon, with the team announcing the re-signing of runningback BenJarvus Green-Ellis.

The Patriots runningback rushed for over 1,000 yards last season, finishing with 1008 yards on 229 carries, along with 13 rushing touchdowns - the third highest rushing touchdown total by a Patriots player. He started 11 of 16 games.

The Patriots have announced the re-signing of running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis, as well as the signings of veteran guard/centers Chris Morris and Jonathan Compas and undrafted rookie running back Richard Medlin (Fayetteville State).

Morris, 28, worked out for the Patriots on Tuesday. He was originally drafted in the seventh round by the Raiders in 2006, and spent four seasons in Oakland before joining the Panthers in 2010. He has played in 51 career games, making 11 starts.

Compas, 25, entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the Raiders, and played in two games as a reserve with the Buccaneers in 2009. He was released by Tampa Bay on September 24, 2010 and spent the remainder of the season out of football.

Both Morris and Compas will add depth to an interior of the Patriots offensive line that had only eight players in uniform for Tuesday's practice. The unit will be bolstered by the return of re-signed free agents Matt Light and Logan Mankins, but center/guard Ryan Wendell was out of practice on Tuesday and his status is unclear.

The team also confirmed the previously reported release of running back Thomas Clayton while announcing that rookie free agent guard Mike Berry has also been waived. Berry had not yet practiced after opening training camp on the Active/Non-Football Injury list.

Aug 3, 2009:
The New England Patriots made quarterback moves Monday as they announced the signing of veteran Andrew Walter and the release of three-year backup Matt Gutierrez.

Walter spent the last four seasons in Oakland after joining the Raiders as a third round pick out of Arizona State in 2005. Walter, who was waived by Oakland on July 30, has started nine of 15 games and completed 174 of 333 passes for 1,919 yards and three touchdowns in his career. In 2006 alone, he played in 12 games and completed 147 of 276 passes for 1,677 yards and three touchdowns.

Gutierrez joined the Patriots as a rookie free agent out of Idaho State in 2007 and made the team as the third quarterback. He played in five games as a rookie, completing one pass for 15 yards at Miami.

In signing Andrew Walter and releasing Matt Gutierrez, the Patriots put a priority on adding more experience behind quarterback Tom Brady.

Walter, who enters his fifth season and has nine career starts on his resume, has been on the field more than Gutierrez (0 starts). With projected No. 2 option Kevin O’Connell (0 starts) entering his second season — and Brady returning from a serious knee injury — adding a player who has started in regular-season action probably increases the team’s comfort level at the position.

The club had also worked out five-year veteran Cleo Lemon last Friday.

Walter will likely slide into the No. 3 spot on the depth chart, although it’s possible he could push O’Connell for the No. 2 role. When considering the statistics he compiled in Oakland (3 TDs, 16 INT), it should be noted that he had four different head coaches and multiple systems to learn, which are factors that can stunt development.

The Patriots released Walter 32 days later.

Aug 3, 2005:
The Patriots signed rookie free agent defensive lineman Tom Sverchek today. Additionally, the team released rookie wide receiver Rich Musinski.

Sverchek, 23, was originally signed by the Buffalo Bills as an undrafted free agent on April 29, 2005. He was waived by the Bills on Thursday, July 28. The 6-foot-3-inch, 300-pound defensive lineman attended the University of California at Berkeley, where he played in 36 games, notching 74 tackles (45 solo) with eight sacks, a fumble recovery and two pass deflections. Sverchek is a native of San Luis Obispo, Calif.

Musinski, 24, was signed by the Patriots on July 28, 2005. He was originally signed by the Tennessee Titans as an undrafted free agent on April 26, 2004. The 5-foot-11-inch, 199-pound receiver played in three preseason games for the Titans in 2004 and recorded one reception for five yards. He was released by Tennessee in the final preseason roster cuts on Sept. 5, 2004.

Aug 3, 2001:
The New England Patriots signed veteran linebacker Roman Phifer yesterday.

The 33-year-old Phifer, a free agent, started 11 of 16 games at outside linebacker for the New York Jets last season. He had 45 tackles, four sacks and one forced fumble.

Phifer was released by the Jets in February to clear salary-cap space.

Phifer, out of UCLA, was selected in the second round of the 1991 draft by the Los Angeles Rams. He played his first eight seasons with the Rams, four in Los Angeles and four in St. Louis before signing with the New York Jets as a free agent in 1999.

In 10 NFL seasons, Pfifer started 134 of 151 games and has 915 career tackles, including 23? sacks. He has forced 12 fumbles and is credited with four recoveries.

Also, the Patriots waived punter Dan Hadenfeldt.

The 24-year-old Hadenfeldt was signed by the Patriots as a rookie free agent on April 27th. He had 104 punts for 4,632 yards and a 44.5 average at Nebraska.

Aug 3, 1992:
The Patriots sign their second round draft pick, CB Rod Smith of Notre Dame.

Hailing from the heart of Saint Paul, Minnesota, Rod’s lifelong passion for football ignited back in the 9th grade. During his formative years at Roseville High School, he didn't just excel in one sport – he conquered three: football, basketball, and track. Imagine an all-conference basketball player and a three-time state champion in Track and Field, boasting dominance in the 100M, 200M, and long jump, all in 1987. But it was football that truly stirred his soul, making him the stuff of legends at Roseville Area High School. In 1987, he claimed the coveted title of Minnesota's Mr. Football, earned the honor of Minnesota Gatorade Player of the Year, and found himself on the Football Parade All-American team. Not to be outdone, Rod was also an Honor Roll graduate, proving his brains matched his brawn.

His incredible journey led him to the University of Notre Dame on a full football scholarship, where he pursued a Bachelor of Arts in economics. The zenith of his college career came in 1988 when he played an instrumental role in the Fighting Irish's triumphant national championship victory under the guidance of Coach Lou Holtz. To this day, the '88 squad is hailed as one of the most remarkable undefeated teams in college football history. In 1992, Rod's star shone once more as he delivered an exceptional performance in the Sugar Bowl, securing a historic upset victory against the #3 Florida Gators with 18 tackles.

The transition to the NFL saw Rod chosen as the 35th pick in the 1992 NFL draft by the New England Patriots. He didn't just enter the league; he burst onto the scene, earning the prestigious Rookie of the Year title. His presence played a pivotal role in the Patriots' transformation from a 2-14 team in 1992 to a formidable 10-6 contender by 1994. Rod had the privilege of learning from the legendary Bill Parcells, an experience that not only shaped his career but also left a lasting impact on his life.

In 1995, Rod embarked on a new adventure, becoming the first pick in the expansion draft and joining the Carolina Panthers as an Original Gangster (OG). His time with the Panthers was marked by success, as the team achieved a remarkable 7-9 record in their inaugural season, setting an NFL record for most wins by an expansion team. In 1996, the Panthers reached new heights, clinching the NFC Western division with a stellar 12-4 record and securing a spot in the NFC championship game.

Today, Rod calls Charlotte home, where he continued his education, earning a Master's degree in Organizational Management. His commitment to giving back remains steadfast as he actively supports local charities and serves on the board of trustees for the Speedway Children's Charities. Rod's love for football shines through as he volunteers as a flag football coach for a local Parks and Recreation Youth Sports organization.

Beyond sports, Rod is a dedicated runner and yogi, passionately advocating for health, wellness, and the art of graceful aging. He shares this passion through captivating speaking engagements, addressing a wide spectrum of topics, from achieving mental and physical wellness to recounting his extraordinary sports journey. Additionally, Rod shares motivation and Football IQ on TikTok and YouTube under Rod Smith Official.

Rookie offensive tackle Bruce Armstrong suffers a shoulder injury, and is ruled out indefinitely. The former University of Louisville Cardinal was able to recover and play in the season opener.

Aug 3, 1977:
The Patriots release DE Dennis Fenton, a Springfiled Mass native who was a wrestler at UMass - recruited to also play football for the Minutemen by **** McPherson

Dennis Fenton began his long wrestling career on the 3rd floor of the Springfield Boy's Club where an old itchy horse hair mat was the proving ground for many kids from Hungry Hill. Although he learned the fundamentals of wrestling form Tommy Ryan at the club, he still received a severe beating from a gang of older teens at a city park. Dennis swore that he would never be embarrassed like that again and began to take his wrestling and weight training very seriously. He moved on and wrestled in junior high, winning his first title as city champ. In high school Dennis wrestled for Springfield's Classical High from 1971-1973 but gained much of his knowledge of wrestling technique from Fred Scyocurka who helped Dennis become a 3 time sectional champ. During Dennis' junior year he placed 2nd in both the Massachusetts State and New England Tournaments. During his senior year, Dennis was undefeated and placed first in the State and New England tournaments, winning all matches by pin except for two bouts in the New England tournament. Dennis played football at Classical and was selected to the Western Mass All-Star team in 1973.

Dennis was recruited by many colleges but chose the University of Massachusetts because he wanted to be coached by wrestling coach Homer Barr and football coach **** McPherson. Dennis was awarded a full 4-year football scholarship and started at defensive tackle for 3 years. Dennis was selected to the All-Yankee Conference and All-ECAC football teams in 1975 and 1976. Dennis wrestled at heavyweight for UMASS and was a 4-time Division I New England champion from 1974-1977. Dennis was also the Yankee Conference champion in 1975, 1976 and 1977. Dennis was awarded the Samuel B. Crossman Award from UMASS for athlete of the year 1976-1977.

After graduation Dennis signed as a free agent with the New England Patriots in 1977 and the Cleveland Browns in 1978. After coaching wrestling at UMASS for 2 years under head coach Dave Amato, Dennis began his 34 year teaching and coaching career at Putnam High School in Springfield, Massachusetts. In total, Dennis has been a wrestling coach at a number of high Schools for 38 years including: Cathedral, Classical, Central, Putnam, Belchertown and presently Chicopee Comp High School. Dennis was also the youth wrestling coach at the Springfield Boys' Club for 13 years. Dennis also coached football at Putnam and Cathedral High Schools for 25 years. Dennis has coached many individual, Western Massachusetts Sectional, State and New England place finishers and champions. Dennis' teams have been Sectional champs and placed high in State and New England Championships. Dennis' football teams have been 6-time conference champs and 2-time runner-ups in the State Super Bowl. Many of Dennis' athletes have gone on to play football or wrestle in college.

Dude was a waste - a predicted (you’re welcome) ****ing WASTE of time.
