Yeah. Buy him a pair of Pom-Poms and hire a real head coach. How long must this foolish honeymoon go on?

I’d say it makes more sense to judge him on wins and losses. We’ll see how that looks and whether or not this ends up being the right move, but I’m not concerned with his press conference demeanor. Andy Reid, if you’ve ever watched his press conferences, is also surprisingly candid. Bill was unique and I don’t think we’ll see anyone like him again.

His manner at press conferences reflects an attitude toward his job which suggests to me that he will not succeed. I agree he should be judged by his record, by his accomplishments. I simply am convinced, early I acknowledge, that both his record and his accomplishment will be as unimpressive as his press conferences. I'd be fine with being wrong, but I do not expect to be. He is a walking compendium of squishy, Oprahesque, people-pleasing cliches. People seem optimistic because he is a nice guy. I could not care less. We are not picking Miss Congeniality here.

You don't like that type of personality for a head coach, that's just a personal preference, there is zero evidence the Pete Caroll types fail more often than other types that try to be like Bill, McDaniel's, Judge and Patricia obvious examples, the fact Mayo learned under Bill yet knows he has to be himself and not try to emulate Bill's personality is a positive.

People are not optimistic because he is Nice but because the people that have been close to him and know him in a football sense all regard his ability very highly.

From what we've heard in terms of how he's viewed internally by the people who worked with him even during Bill's tenure, there's a reason to believe he'll be a good coach. You wouldn't think listening to Sean McVay or some of these other guys they'd be as successful as they are, yet the records certainly say otherwise.

The question - and I think most of us are wondering this - is that Mayo was reportedly a key part of the game planning from a defensive standpoint, and how that unit fares against tough competition is going to be a huge barometer when it comes to the potential drop off from Belichick. That is something that remains to be seen, albeit at the same time, Bill wasn't going to be able to coach forever, and this day was bound to come, whether Bill went out on his own terms or not. One just has to hope that Mayo falls somewhere reasonably in the mix of the current head coaching group within the NFL, which is what they'll need to be competitive.

But to already be expecting his failure (or to already be "convinced" of it) based on press conferences feels a little premature when we're still well over a month before any meaningful games begin.

After reading your comment, I went into it expecting a rah-rah, pointless press conference. There was none of that. He wasn’t over the top and aside from the awkward moment with the reporters phone (which Im sure translated better live), he was just very candid. The transcript made him seem more dialed back and vague vs previous press conferences in my opinion. You got an ax to grind or what?

As I think I pretty clearly said or implied, any definitive evaluation awaits his actual performance. That said, early returns, so to speak, do not look favorable to my eye. I think it reasonable to say so, with the caveats I have given. It is certainly at least as reasonable to express these concerns as it is to give him a complete pass because he is a "nice guy" and Robert likes the cut of his jib.

He said, as usual, nothing, but he said it, also as usual, in a pleasant manner. Niceness makes you happy, apparently. How nice for you. I am unimpressed.

I just have zero idea what you're basing that off of. Again, I know you said you'll base your overall opinion on on-field performance, but it's strange that you're already writing him off before that on-field stuff even got started. By all accounts, the day one practice was efficient and ran fairly well, at least based on several reports from yesterday. So, if we're basing it on that, he's off to a decent start. So I don't understand why you believe things "do not look favorable" - aside from the fact you're not pleased with his press conference demeanor...?
