In the Rookies Report For Training Camp thread, saw this little exchange ... Think it really merits its own thread...

Just about every NFL team can identify thier number 1 at WR.. I say pop currently is that guy until further notice

So you can’t tell us what it means, nobody can…

So whats a #1... How is a #1 defined? Basically, to me, in the most commonsense tyle answer, its the teams most talented guy... The protoypical 1 would be the X receiver, the best pass catcher on the field, the guy split to the outside... am I wrong? Is there a better definition?

If not the X because you just have a speed guy on the outside, maybe the 1 is in the Z spot, (or flanker for the football historians), just based on the players intangibles... lines up on the outside, off the line of scrimmage... Usually good hands, has some speed, can make quick cuts, runs good routes...

Outside of that, with the lack of a true Split End, I would define the 1, or in relation to this roster, our 1 should be defined as the best guy on the field, even if they aren't a true X... If fully recovered, it has to be Bourne, though I think he might struggle this year a bit, just based on the observations that it "takes a year"...

So, do we have one? Who is it?

Thats what we will find out in camp this year... Polk certainly has the speed... but then again, so does Thornton... at 6-1, 203 pounds, Polk is a bit more solid than Thornton, and is likely to be better just because he can use that body/size to his advantage much more effectively than Thornton... tbh i am of the belief that Thornton is on the bubble, and most likely will not make the 53 man roster this year...

I will say this I'm on the Tyquan Thornton train in 24 I think he gets it. I love his offseason work ethic building up his body and working on his overall game. Regarding your question Pop Douglas he's a walking First Down. Also I think Baker and Polk will be solid players both excel in the catch radius department but we need the right QB to make it happen *coughs* Drake Maye. Biscuit will not make some of these WR's excel he doesn't have the arm strength to get it there. One day to glory.

If Bourne is "back" is DDs role diminished?

This is a misnomer, if the Pat’s have Demario Douglas or Edelman… do they really have a #1… most here are saying no.

What they have is a slot receiver who receives the majority of targets because the offense dictates it and he’s open more often than not.

Nobody is going to suggest Edelman or Douglas is Justin Jefferson or Randy Moss.

I don't like Bourne as much as the current brass I think his game is average. Pop Dougals is ELite and will be our #1 WR.

Maybe in name only, at that point are they now our 1?

Or is a 1 just a strictly defined position?

That's why I thought your exchange with Real was interesting... It truly asks a tough question, regardless of how simple it sounds on the face of it...

No, DD will own the interior and is a slot machine… money.
Exactly I think J Polk could be Slot guy too he's a jack of all trades Short - Intermediate and Long.

Is that the best use of Pop? Moving him out of the slot?

You think he's better suited elsewhere?

Who's with me on the not so Slenderman train the new Tyquan Thornton.

I meant Polk could be a Slot guy too both could play basically anywhere.

So I guess we can all shut up about the Pat’s (every team) not having a #1… by this ^ rationale every team has a #1.

Somehow I don’t think the weaponz obsessed or lovers of shiny hood ornaments will play along…

Is the #1 receiver the best receiver on a team or is there more to it, such as it’s the best receiver who needs to be double teamed and is one of the primary concerns for opposing defenses.

AVP's Offense love Big Play Guys this where Thornton fits in I am sure AVP will make us know If Thornton is in the plans or not I sure hope so. Thornton is over Fastest boundary Receiver we need to set him loose.

What I want to know is who's our next Fastest WR after Thornton??

I'll just stick to our own division
Allen- Coleman
Jets- Wilson
Miami- hill
NE- pop? Kb? Kj? Polk? Baker? Thornton?

All of those guys for us are fine WRs.. but I guess I can't definitively say we have that guy. So I'll say pop is the guy as we enter camp that will command the coverage and the Ds attention.

This is why I so badly want to see one of these other guys become a guy in the offense that commands attention outside of Douglas. It will only make us better.

A #1 WR is the one that opposing defenses formulate a gameplan to stop.

IE: when the Pats took away Tyreek Hill in the 2019 AFCC - Hill had 1 reception for 42 yards 0 TDs.

For decades the Pats did not require a WR1 because Brady spread the ball around so well to the best option that was open.
