Nice: call me crazy but I really liked Rookie Isaiah Bolden before he got injured. I think we are going to be very good @ CB minus injuries.
Yes. It's unfortunate what happened in GB.. seeing him like that. But yes he definitely has an opportunity.. I said yesterday I think mayo hasn't brung in a veteran becuase he believes in this group big Time.

Agree: we can move a couple of them to FS if we get banged up is that area.

Real, I know he's shorter but I think with his Elite Speed and playmaking ability I am not against Marcus Jones Starting alongside Gonzo. Marcus did a nice job Defending D Adams in that weird game we gifted the Raiders.
You know something I really like M jones.. he's an excellent athlete and I'm glad we will have him back.. his skills set IMO is better in the slot.. he can play outside.. but I get Ellis Hobbs vibe sometimes Lol...

Duly noted but most times speed trumps everything else.

That's true... j. Jones is one of the fastest guys on the team.. and even diggs and Jefferson had thier way... but I would love M Jones on hill though..

I don't know why this is so complicated.
Gonzo, JJ, Marcus are our top 3 CBs. If one of the top 2 gets hurt the other 2 are the first backups.

At that point if size becomes an issue you start using one of the others situationally assuming one can handle the size.

I'm not going to sit here and say JJ never got exposed due to size. But I don't think it's been a large problem in his career. Marcus needs to prove himself sure but I chose to believe he can handle it.

The whole size thing is over blown because Gonzo is out guy with size he'll be the one matching up with bigger guys. And "as of December 2021, the average height of an NFL cornerback is 5'11" and they weigh around 193 pounds." So why we acting like our guys are some anomaly.

You state that
1) as of the 2021 season, corners (including slot corners) averaged 5" 11".
2) Therefore, having an outside corner at 5"9" and a backup at 5' 8" isn't unusual

I submit that if corner average 5' 11", it is likely that it is indeed unusual for two of the three starters to be 5' 9" or shorter.

I want to see him on a good defense for the first time of his pro career, but I think so.

Remember PFF told us Gilmore was a bad player because he played on a bad defense. It’s very hard for a CB to look on a bad team. He put some good football on tape in Arizona, then a new regime came in an didn’t value him like the previous one.
Gilmore being great doesn't tell us anything about Wilson

It tells us that a CB can have All World talent and still look lesser on a bad defense in Buffalo.

It doesn't seem right to have a top starter at outside corner being only 5' 9" and his backup being 5'8". However, your analysis is reasonable.

I would add that we have THREE starters since our base is defensive backs. Foe me, that's fine since I think that Wade is our #4 and can play both inside and outside.

my guess 1. Gilmour, 2 Jackson. 3rd week of camp.

Personally I've never liked 5'8, 5'9 guys on the outside. Tyrone pool was good for us.. but typically you want bigger CB'S on the outside.. one thing we have is some big CBs.. Bolden, Wade, Austin, gonzo are all 6'0 and up.

It was a quick Google that stated it.

Also a quick Google of the heights has Gonzo 6'2", JJ 5'10", and Marcus 5'8" so I think that is very close to average.

6’ and up on the outside. Jones’ should only be on the inside.

OK. My guess is that the average of these three are among the shortest in the league, certainly among top defenses.
per patriots.com

Gonzales 6'1" or 71 inches
J Jones 5'9" or 69 inches
M Jones 5'8" or 68 inches
------------------------------
Average 5'10" or 70 inches

Please consider top 10 Defenses. Who top 3 average less than 5" 10"? any?
================
BTW, other than Jones and Jones (and Gonzo,, all the rest of our corners are at least 6 feet (Wade, Bolden, Wilson, Austin and Dial).

It remains to be seen whether Jones and Jones will be limited to duties as a nickel back.

This post must be from 2018.

I think that if the kids dont show enough, they may want an older vet to come in and help settle down the back end. Losing the DB coach may affect some of the cohesion back there.

I tend to agree that 6 feet should be the standard, although there have been very good 5'11'' outside corners.

Bringing our average up. Just put the better players on the field and use other guys if size becomes an issue with a particular matchup.

Look I'll admit 5'8" could be a problem but he's a young kid who looks like he can ball deal with this problem when it arises. JJ on the other hand has been doing it for years at 5'10" so not worried at all especially with Gonzalez on the field.
