Maye shows improvement, Brisket still expected to start

I am looking at this year with very very low expectations. I am not concerned with wins or losses (do not care if they go (0-16) but expect

1. The team to show fight on both sides of the ball
2. No quitting
3. Improvement throughout the year
4. Give young players a chance to play

No great rush to start Maye. When AVP thinks he is ready that is the time

Major red flags will be no sign of improved play by end of season
Signs of quitting
Players not responding to Mayo

Mayo has a large sample size to go off of. McDaniels, Mangini, Matt and Joe to name a few. All tried to be be bill in thier HC tenure. If Mayo tries to be bill.. then I believe the players will sour on him. He needs to be him. But I agree 100% with your assessment! Looking forward to camp!

I've always been a believer that the only way to get use to NFL speed is to play at NFL speed. I generally dislike rookie QBs sitting out their rookie year. The arguments that you may ruin a rookie QB generally ring hallow. It is only when you do what the Patriots did to Mac Jones as far as changing the OC to a guy whose never OC'd when the first one worked well with him, taking away offensive weapons, and giving no year to year consistency that it can even be suggested that you might have taken him off the rails.

But even then football is still football. You throw to your WRs and while the terms may change there are only so many routes, so many throws and so many defenses. Many of which have very similar schemes. Either you can play or you can't after a while. Maye to me is raw but he has a lot of tools you like to see. Either he will put them together or he won't. And in the end I won't think it will matter much if we play him week 1 or week 10 when we are completely out of contention. Except it may delay his development a bit. And I want to see what he has now. I don't want to waste this year just so we can come back next year and play him and then assume we need to give him another full year to look at because his rookie year didn't really count.

If he can't hack it I want to know ASAP so we can trade him for whatever we can get and move on.

That's a very, very logical post. I'll add that CJ stroud wasn't expected to start he was supposed to sit behind mills.. however he won the job in camp and started day 1.. I think maye has similar opportunity to do the same thing here.

So Maye is improving, per Curran. Thats a good thing. I am happy to hear it. Will be happier to see it in Camp and the preseason,

And Mayo & The Pats are still considering Brisket to be the starter for the season - This is also a (very) good thing.

Brisket should be under center at the beginning of the year, even if we all know Maye is the better player at that time. That's why he was brought to New England. Let him take the lumps while Maye continues to progress. Let him take the lumps while the (left side?) of the OL get settled (i think the LT spot will be a variation of musical chairs while the best candidate for the position is identified in actual games).

I understand the desire to see what Maye brings to the table in real games, but the longer we hold off installing him as the starter, the better off he will be in the long run... Mayo has to give him every advantage to succeed, even if that means keeping him on the bench for a while...

Clearly there is a lot of merit in play the rookie QB as soon as he earns it. That said there are examples of QB's whose careers were derailed or significantly delayed due to starting on bad football teams. David Carr for the Texans and Jim Plunkett for the Pats are good examples. The injuries took their toll on both before they were able to break through.

That chart puts things in perspective. Reality does not match perception for many of the elite QB's represented. Lamar is especially eye opening.

I can see this playing out in the cam/Mac scenario. While the teams talking Brissett starting I believe that's to fuel Drake even more. I'm glad we didn't come out and do what Chicago did and say Williams is the starter without him even going through OTAs yet. Players and coaches know who's the best guys to lead the team.. Brissett isn't going to challenge the defense in camp like Drake can.

Agreed here. Seeing him with dabol who's a QB whisperer in his own right. And putting Drake through the ringer was awesome.. drake's football IQ, and his confidence is through the moon. I really like this kid, and I believe he's going to be special. Mayo's been saying competition, competition.. if Drake shows AVP convincingly like he's been doing all off season while earning the job I don't see how as an organization you don't start him.
