For Rebuild Year One - The OL Isn't That Bad

For about the 500th time out of my mouth…boy Charles Leno would look good on a 1 year deal, then draft the future LT next year.

IMO they really like Chuks at LT if Wallace barely sniffs snaps there. Nothing was worse than watching OL players struggle the past few years because BB was too stubborn (among other reasons) to make changes. Admitting a wrong and making changes to benefit the team is a strength…not a weakness.
Agree here. Egos, Egos are what can take a man down. If that works out the Chuks is the guy protecting cannon Drake them I'm all in. Just SOMEONE please be decent at the position.

An experienced QB can cope with a mediocre OL better than an inexperienced QB, and he can also do more to help the OL do a better job.

And I’m not as convinced as some on here that Drake Maye will be walking on water from the start of camp. We will see, but don’t be surprised if it takes him months, or even a full year, to crack the starting roster.
I believe what experts and people in the organization are saying is. Is that Maye has continued to excel each day since he's been in the system. That is what you want to see from your QB. We know he's the most lifted and talented QB on the roster. Brissett while a great guy and serviceable vet is what he is.. he will have a difficult time against this defense just like all the QBs were.. Peppers said Drake impressed him in mini camp fighting through adversity with turnovers and scored 3 TDs in the end.. even though it's just minicamp those are things you want to hear. So camp will tell us all we need to know.

Rham is going to have to chip a lot if the outsides to help our LT.
RB’s, TE’s, WR’s… everyone will have to help out the tackles.

The offense can also help itself by attacking vertically in both the run and pass game. Their tackles aren’t mobile, but they’re pretty fast going forward. The Rams are a good example of a team that executes well with lesser talent on the line, to some extent the 49ers do it now as well.

Bottom line is their center/guard play should carry the run game, play action can help the deep passing game, but to utilize it effectively they have to run the ball.

For this offense to be good, along with blocking and QB play… they need Van Pelt to be really good at his job.

I suppose that Leverett isn't a lock. I just think that fits the Ferentz position better than anyone else. I do acknowledge that Jordan might beat him out for the C/G roster spot.

We will keep 3 backup IOL's. My very personal view is that Leverett will win one of thoe three positions.

You keep focusing on guaranteed money and then think that Mafi will make the team. He has zero guaranteed money.
Ferentz had a job because he was Bill’s friend’s son who also happened to be good college coach. He wasn’t the best example of a backup by a mile.

The only thing Leverett has in common is both are average/poor athletes who can get bye against lesser opponents but will shrink against the best.

Agreed, they’ll keep at least 3 backup linemen, more including the practice squad. One backup will have to play center, one a tackle who can play both sides, the third the best player available.

I look at the Patriots roster, and in terms of athleticism alone Calvin Anderson, Jake Andrews, Antonio Mafi, Zuri Henry, Layden Robinson even Charles Turner are better players.

I know some of these ^ young players will fail, but not enough to allow Leverett and Jordan to make the 53. If that happens the line is terrible.

Our O-Line is ranked between 28th and 30th by several sites.
The people that want Maye to start in week 1 need their head examined.
Here are 2 of them ... sure it varies but all of them have us in a dumpster fire.
I'm not complaining ... just seeing the reality of it for this year.

I posted these links in another thread as well. The OL needs to prove it can block effectively before throwing Maye out there. If Brissett gets injured, expect Zappe again.

Sounds well and good but lists are mostly dumb and created by people who don't know much... guys with degrees in journalism. Nothing wrong with it, but it's about as valid as your opinion or mine or Joe Average at your local bar.

It's too early to know who the starting offensive line is, we'll see. Maye might simply beat Brissett out for the job, in which case you're not keeping him pinned to the bench just for the sake of it.

Yep I am sure the faithfuls want to see that trainwreck.

I am not buying any of that as long as V Lowe ain't Starting we will be decent. I think Sow - Wallace - Robinson and even Mafi will be decent.

Sure you are, if the OL - especially LT - still are springing leaks. Doing otherwise wouldn't be prudent.

No choice in the matter... Throwing Maye behind an OL that just got their first QB injured should be a non-starter; and Milton would be even worse of a train wreck than Zippy...

Based on...?
I'm not down on the new Regime Coach cap I like the current pieces. I think we have some decent players to work with some carryovers and new blood.

The OL at the tackle position is a mess until evidence to the contrary is spotted.

We’re going to try Okorafor at LT, which he last played in Kalamazoo in 2017 He’s backed up by some sickly guy named Calvin and VLowe, who can’t play RT. More promise at LT?

At RT it should not be Onwenu. He is not going to be able to physically cope with a steady dose of outside zone. So rookie Wallace. Growing pains there I’m sure.

Wallace is pure speculation as no one knows and Mafi is based on him improving a lot on last year Sow showed a lot more promise.

We know this ^ to be true?

This is why I said it's too early to be making these declarations. For all we know Caeden Wallace steps in at RT and plays great, in which case they'll have one position to figure out at LT. They have options, for all we know Calvin Anderson is fully recovered from malaria, or Zuri Henry is some diamond in the rough stud.

Ask me again after camp...
