Former No. 1 NFL draft pick JaMarcus Russell has been removed from the coaching staff at the high school he attended in Mobile, Alabama, and is facing a lawsuit accusing him of taking money meant as a donation to the school.

The Raiders paid Russell roughly $40 million (now including the $3 million settlement), but received just three years of service in return. From 2007-09, Russell started 25 games—winning just seven—and threw 18 touchdowns against 23 interceptions.

This guy just blows. Blew away his playing career, blew his career earnings, blew his post career job... Maybe he should work in a seedy spa, make his talent useful.

Between 2007-10 Russell brought home about $40 Million after being drafted #1.
Unless he gambled it all away why would he need to steal??
Need?? The thrill? No matter as he will never be involved with a sports team again.

There's lots of ways to lose your money without gambling. More than one athlete has made bad investments. Supporting the posse. Extravagant purchases. Things like that.

Those who were around during his brief NFL "career" will not be shocked to learn of this.
2007 first round pick.. to the Raiders... benefited from the rookie contracts handed out around that Time.. what was it 60 silly he got?

$40M it appears. Still enough to live well if you're not an idiot.

People always talk about Ryan Leaf as the biggest bust ever but I still think it is Jamarcus Russell. Leaf at least bounced around and got a few looks from other teams. Russell played three years and then never played again. Between his constant weight issues, codeine addiction, and flat out laziness he has to go down as the biggest bust in NFL history. At least Leaf has turned his life around in recent years after bottoming out. Russell still seems like the lazy con artist he was when he was in Oakland.

Trey Lance is the biggest bust ever. 3 first rounders for the guy and he has started all of 4 games. JaMarcus is an HOFer compared to Lance.

I bet he blew the 40 mill, the Celtics had a player that blew 100 mill, I know they only get about half that but it's still a lot of money to blow.

Since Tim Couch, JaMarcus Russell was the start of the trend of players randomly having their stock skyrocket for absolutely no reason. Alex Smith is up there as well as he had no business being the #1 pick.

49ers have got to be the luckiest franchise in the NFL. How do you blow that many picks, yet still end up in the NFCCG 3 straight times and a Super Bowl? The rumors coming out of San Francisco was that Lynch and Shanahan were on the hot seat. They were 2-4 in 2021 before going on that run. Had they missed the playoffs, both Lynch and Shanahan were probably going to get canned.

What especially scary is that while we don't know whom they would have taken had they kept the picks, the picks they traded away turned into Micah Parsons, Cole Strange, Jeremy Ruckert and Bryan Bresee.
